Subaru revealed two possible STI futures at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show: a battery-electric Performance-E concept and an internal-combustion Performance-B concept. Neither was confirmed for production, so the event points to a broader STI strategy rather than announcing a new WRX STI.
Subaru used the 2025 Japan Mobility Show to show two possible futures for STI performance: the battery-electric Performance-E STI concept and the internal-combustion Performance-B STI concept. Both were presented as world premieres, but neither was announced as a production vehicle. The reveal is best understood as a two-track statement about where Subaru could take STI—not as confirmation that a new road-going WRX STI is returning.

What Subaru revealed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show
Subaru opened its Japan Mobility Show 2025 exhibit on October 29, 2025, with public attendance scheduled for October 31 through November 9. The two STI concepts were displayed in the show’s Performance Scene.
The exhibit also included the Trailseeker prototype, Forester Wilderness prototype, Outback Wilderness prototype, and the 1983 Subaru GL Family Huckster in an Adventure Scene. That broader display gave the STI concepts a specific role: they represented Subaru’s attempt to keep emotional, driver-focused performance relevant while the company explores different propulsion technologies.

Performance-E: Subaru’s electric STI direction
The Performance-E STI concept is Subaru’s battery-electric interpretation of future STI performance. Subaru’s description focuses on a dramatic but practical proportion, aerodynamic performance, heritage-related design cues, a driver-oriented layout, and a spacious interior.
Subaru also said the concept incorporates technologies intended to create an intuitive and exhilarating driving experience. Its separate design coverage presents Performance-E as an exercise in expressing two long-standing Subaru ideas: the enjoyment of driving and the enjoyment of controlling a vehicle through its dynamic form.
What Subaru has not disclosed about Performance-E
The reveal materials do not provide the specifications that would be needed to evaluate Performance-E as a production car. Subaru has not confirmed:

- battery capacity;
- motor count or drivetrain layout;
- horsepower, torque, or acceleration;
- driving range;
- charging speed;
- dimensions or curb weight;
- a production timetable; or
- which markets, if any, would receive a production version.
That lack of data is important. Performance-E demonstrates a design and technology direction, but the available information does not establish a finalized electric powertrain or a road-car program.
Performance-B: the ICE-powered STI alternative
The Performance-B STI concept follows a different path. Subaru describes it as an internal-combustion-engine-based concept intended to balance performance, power, and practicality.

The company specifically connects Performance-B with two familiar Subaru assets: a horizontally opposed turbocharged engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru says those technologies can be adapted flexibly to broaden its performance choices.
That wording makes Performance-B the more obvious continuation of Subaru’s established performance vocabulary. It preserves the mechanical themes that enthusiasts associate with the WRX and STI—boxer-engine power and all-wheel-drive traction—while leaving the final vehicle and specifications open.

Subaru did not announce a production name, engine displacement, transmission, output, price, launch date, or market availability for Performance-B. The company also did not say that the concept is a production-ready WRX STI.
Consequently, it would be inaccurate to describe the show car as a confirmed new WRX STI or to claim that a showroom launch is imminent. A concept can communicate design priorities and engineering ideas without receiving production approval.
The 2026 motorsport follow-up
Subaru’s January 9, 2026 motorsport plan provides the clearest follow-up to the Performance-B theme. Subaru said a new race car entering the 2026 Super Taikyu program was developed according to the same basic thinking proposed by Performance-B: combine Subaru’s existing assets to create a car that more people can enjoy driving.

For that competition program, Subaru identified an FA24 horizontally opposed direct-injection turbo engine. This makes the Performance-B philosophy more than a one-day design exercise; Subaru subsequently applied similar thinking to a motorsport development program.
There is still an important limit to what that proves. A race car and a production road car have different engineering, regulatory, durability, cost, and business requirements. Motorsport development may inform future vehicles or performance parts, but it does not guarantee that the Performance-B concept—or a new WRX STI derived from it—will reach dealers.
Why Subaru showed electric and ICE STI concepts together
The pairing lets Subaru communicate continuity and transition at the same time.
| Concept | Propulsion direction | What Subaru emphasizes | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance-E | Battery electric | Aerodynamic form, practical proportions, driver-focused packaging, heritage cues, and an intuitive driving experience | Battery, motors, output, range, charging, production timing, and market availability |
| Performance-B | Internal combustion | Performance, power, practicality, a horizontally opposed turbo engine, and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive | Production approval, engine size, transmission, output, price, launch date, and markets |
Performance-B keeps Subaru’s current performance identity in play. Performance-E gives STI a possible electric design and technology direction. Subaru’s messaging presents this as a widening of performance choices, not a declaration that electric power has already replaced combustion engines—or that combustion-powered STI models are guaranteed to continue.

What this means for the future of STI
Subaru appears to be protecting the emotional core of STI while separating that identity from a single mandatory powertrain. The brand’s challenge is to make an electric STI feel like a performance Subaru rather than merely a fast electric vehicle, while also determining how long the boxer-engine and all-wheel-drive formula can remain viable under changing regulations and market conditions.

Performance-E addresses the first question through design, packaging, and the promise of intuitive vehicle control. Performance-B addresses the second by keeping Subaru’s existing performance hardware and combustion-engine expertise part of the conversation. Showing both concepts at the same event avoids choosing a public winner before Subaru is ready to make that choice.
The 2026 motorsport announcement strengthens the case that Subaru is actively developing Performance-B-related ideas. It does not settle the larger production question. The most defensible conclusion is that STI is being explored as a broader performance identity with electric and ICE expressions, rather than as one confirmed upcoming model.
Current-car alternative: STI-branded accessories
Readers who already own a compatible Subaru may find a more practical connection to the brand through genuine Subaru STI accessories and replacement parts. Subaru maintains an STI Brand category in its parts network, including STI-branded WRX applications.
These products are for compatible existing vehicles. They are not parts for Performance-E or Performance-B, and they should not be treated as evidence that either concept has entered production. Confirm the vehicle’s model year, trim, market, and fitment with the official catalog or a Subaru dealer before ordering.
Bottom line
Subaru’s 2025 Japan Mobility Show message was not “the WRX STI is back.” It was a two-track performance statement: Performance-E explores an electric STI future, while Performance-B keeps Subaru’s boxer-engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive formula in play. The 2026 motorsport program shows that Performance-B-related thinking continued beyond the show, but the production status of both concepts remains unconfirmed.
