The strongest specific warning in the available evidence is the 2014 model year, which CarComplaints flags for reported oil consumption. Consumer Reports gives the 2025 Forester a 98/100 predicted-reliability score in its 2025 report and the 2026 Forester a 60/100 prediction in its 2026 report. Those are different model-year predictions—not observed failure rates or generation-wide verdicts.
Can the Forester generations be ranked reliably?
Not on the evidence available here. Consumer Reports publishes model-year predictions based on member surveys, while CarComplaints summarizes owner-submitted complaints. Neither source supplies a directly comparable reliability rate for each Forester generation across the model’s history. Treating those unlike measures as a six-generation leaderboard would imply more certainty than the data support.
The most useful comparison is therefore a set of evidence-based signals for specific model years. These can guide a used-car search, but they do not establish that every car from a favored year is dependable or that every car from a cautioned year is unreliable.
What the available model-year evidence shows
| Model year | Evidence | What it can tell a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Consumer Reports’ 2025 report gives the Forester a 98/100 predicted-reliability score. | A strongly favorable prediction for that model year. It is not a measured failure rate or a score for every year in the generation. |
| 2026 | Consumer Reports’ 2026 report gives the Forester a 60/100 predicted-reliability score. | A less favorable prediction than the 2025 report’s figure. The available evidence does not establish why the predictions differ. |
| 2019 | Consumer Reports describes reliability as about average compared with other 2019 vehicles. Its score is based on its latest subscriber survey of 2019 Forester owners. | A survey-based, model-year assessment—not proof that every listed owner-reported issue is common or present in a particular vehicle. |
| 2014 | CarComplaints labels 2014 the Forester’s worst model year, names engine problems as its worst category, and identifies high oil consumption as its most reported problem. | A reason to investigate oil use and engine history closely. The label is CarComplaints’ assessment of complaint reports and other factors, not a controlled failure-rate finding. |
How to read the apparent 2025–2026 contrast
Consumer Reports’ displayed survey history covers 2018–2025 and marks 2019 and 2025 as redesign years. Its 2025 report identifies that Forester as the redesigned sixth generation. The 98/100 figure belongs to the 2025 report’s prediction for the 2025 model year; the 60/100 figure belongs to the 2026 report’s prediction for the 2026 model year. Do not average them into a generation score or assume they measure the same cars under identical conditions.

Consumer Reports says its reliability histories draw on member survey information and cover model years 2000 through 2025, plus some early 2026s. Its FAQ says predictions for a new model year can draw on recent model history when that year has not been significantly redesigned. These data provide useful context, but they do not create a full-history, generation-by-generation ranking.
Why 2014 warrants extra scrutiny—not an automatic rejection
CarComplaints reports more total complaints for the 2015 Forester than for 2014, even though it labels 2014 the worse year. Its assessment can take into account factors such as repair cost or problems occurring at lower mileage, so its “worst” label is not simply a raw complaint-count ranking. Complaint submissions are a signal for what to investigate, not a defect rate; they also cannot show whether a particular used Forester was maintained well or repaired properly.

Consumer Reports’ 2019 owner comments include concerns across electronics, emissions and fuel, suspension, and engine cooling. Those comments can help shape inspection questions, but they do not establish a defect rate or show that every 2019 Forester has those issues.
How to compare two used Foresters
- Confirm the exact model year. Do not substitute a generation label for the year-specific evidence. Redesign years can have less accumulated survey history than established model years.
- Separate the kinds of evidence. Read Consumer Reports’ subscriber-survey prediction as a different measure from CarComplaints’ owner-submitted complaint summary; neither is a vehicle-specific diagnosis.
- Ask for service records and repair invoices. For a 2014, look specifically for documentation about oil consumption and engine work. For any candidate, check whether repairs and routine maintenance are documented.
- Have the actual car inspected. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess its condition, mileage-related wear, and records. A year-level signal cannot substitute for this vehicle-specific check.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use Subaru’s official recall lookup for the car’s VIN, then confirm whether any open recall work has been completed with a dealer or official record. Subaru says the lookup excludes recalls issued before February 1998.
Bottom line on the ranking
The evidence supports year-specific caution and comparison, not a defensible first-through-sixth order for Forester generations. The 2025 prediction is favorable, the 2026 prediction is lower, and 2014 merits extra investigation because of CarComplaints’ oil-consumption reports. Use those signals to decide what to verify on an individual car—not as a substitute for its history, inspection, or VIN recall check.
