Toyota’s 2021 GR86 launch material says the car was jointly developed with Subaru and “shares the same base as the Subaru BRZ.” Both use a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft in the 2026 U.S. models.

That is Toyota’s engineering intent, not independent evidence that every driver will prefer the GR86. The fuel-economy figures are manufacturer estimates shown in different orders, not a matched independent test. Subaru’s cited prices cover Limited and tS, while Toyota also lists a less expensive base GR86, so the figures do not establish that Toyota is simply cheaper or that Subaru offers better value.

Subaru BRZ Limited
The 2026 BRZ Limited is listed at a $35,860 U.S. starting price in Subaru’s trim comparison. It uses the 2.4-liter boxer engine and offers an automatic transmission as an option. It is the BRZ configuration to examine if you want two-pedal commuting without moving to the tS.
Subaru BRZ tS
The BRZ tS is listed at $38,360. Subaru’s comparison identifies STI-tuned suspension, a manual transmission and Brembo performance brakes, along with the Torsen limited-slip differential. The cited source says the tS is not offered with an automatic. If track-oriented hardware is your priority, compare this car with the exact GR86 performance equipment available in your market rather than with a base GR86.

Toyota lists the 2026 GR86 at $31,400, Premium at $34,000 and Yuzu Edition at $36,365. All use the same 228-hp powertrain, rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or automatic. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and a duckbill rear spoiler. The Yuzu Edition adds yellow-accented upholstery and trim. Verify destination charges, options and dealer pricing before treating any listed MSRP as your purchase price.

The available manufacturer material does not establish a complete, controlled comparison of visibility, ride comfort, cabin noise, cargo access, insurance or tire wear. Evaluate those directly because they can matter more than a small difference in trim branding.

- Practical use: Sit in both cars, check sightlines, test the rear seats and load the cargo area with what you actually carry.
- Running costs: Obtain insurance quotes and replacement-tire prices for the exact wheel and tire package. Premium tires and performance brakes can change operating costs.
- Local support: Compare nearby dealer inventory, service scheduling and the out-the-door quote, not just the online configurator.
Warranty and scheduled maintenance
Toyota’s June 1, 2026 U.S. announcement lists a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty and 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain coverage for the GR86. It also includes ToyotaCare for normal factory-scheduled maintenance for 7.5 months or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first, plus 24-hour roadside assistance for two years with unlimited mileage.
Current Subaru BRZ warranty and maintenance terms were not established in the cited material. Read the warranty booklet for your market and model year before comparing coverage. Neither manufacturer’s marketing language should be treated as proof that track use is covered; check exclusions and requirements in the applicable warranty documents.
