Yes—the Tesla Model Y still belongs on a UK electric-SUV shortlist, but the updated XPENG G6 is now a credible alternative to compare before you order. XPENG says the G6 starts at £39,990 and offers up to 326 miles WLTP; Tesla lists the same stated WLTP range for the Model Y Standard RWD, while its UK configurator showed £44,990 for the displayed RWD configuration. Those headline figures are not a like-for-like deal or a real-world range test. Your best choice depends on the exact trim and live price, local service access, and how you charge.
What has changed for UK buyers?
XPENG said on 5 March 2026 that its updated G6 was available to order and experience at retailers nationwide, with finance offers at launch. Its UK product page advertises a starting price of £39,990. Check the retailer announcement and current G6 page for availability and terms.
The question is not whether the G6 makes the Model Y obsolete. It is whether the particular G6 trim and deal you can buy suit you better than the particular Model Y you are considering. Published specifications give a useful starting point, but they do not establish which car is more efficient or has longer real-world range: no controlled, cited head-to-head test of current UK trims is established here.
How do the UK versions compare on published figures?
| Measure | XPENG G6 (UK) | Tesla Model Y Standard RWD (UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Starting or displayed price | From £39,990, according to XPENG UK; the exact trim and included fees should be checked on the live page. | £44,990 was displayed for the shown RWD configuration in Tesla’s UK configurator, accessed 8 October 2026. It is a point-in-time price and includes listed destination/document, first-registration and vehicle-excise-duty fees. |
| Claimed range | Up to 326 miles WLTP; XPENG says range varies by RWD and AWD version. | 326 miles WLTP for Standard RWD, according to Tesla UK. |
| Maximum stated DC charging rate | Up to 451 kW, according to XPENG UK. | 175 kW maximum Supercharging for Standard RWD, according to Tesla UK. |
| Advertised charging time | XPENG states 10–80% in 12 minutes. | Not stated for this trim on the cited Tesla UK page. |
| Basic vehicle warranty | Five-year warranty advertised by XPENG UK; consult its terms for the covered components, mileage limits and exclusions. | Four years or 60,000 miles, according to Tesla UK. |
| Battery and drive-unit warranty | Not stated in the cited XPENG UK page details. | Eight years or 100,000 miles for Standard RWD, according to Tesla UK. |
These are manufacturer-published UK figures, not results from a shared test. WLTP is a standardised range figure; use it to compare stated specifications, not as a promise of the distance you will cover in your own conditions. The Tesla warranty figures above are specifically for Standard RWD; other Model Y trims have different specifications and warranty figures. Review the Tesla UK Model Y page and the G6’s live specification before comparing other versions.

Is the G6’s lower advertised price a better deal?
It may be, but the £39,990 G6 starting price and the £44,990 displayed Tesla RWD configuration are not a confirmed like-for-like comparison. They may differ by equipment, version, included charges and the terms of any finance offer. XPENG announced launch finance offers in March 2026; that does not establish that the same offers remain available now.
Before choosing on price, compare the exact vehicles you can order and include any delivery or registration charges, options, current promotions, deposit, term, interest rate, final payment and mileage limits if financing. Tesla’s configurator price was captured on 8 October 2026, so it should not be treated as permanent. Check the live Tesla UK configurator and XPENG’s current G6 offer rather than relying on a headline starting price.

What do the range and charging figures mean in practice?
Range: compare the exact trim, then your use
Both manufacturers publish a 326-mile WLTP figure for the versions cited here: XPENG’s G6 “up to” figure, which varies between RWD and AWD, and Tesla’s Model Y Standard RWD figure. That numerical match does not show that the cars will travel the same distance in everyday driving. Weather, speed, route, load, temperature and driving style affect usable range. Choose the precise trim first, then consider your regular journeys and where you can recharge; do not infer a real-world winner from the WLTP numbers alone.
Charging: a peak rate is not a typical stop
XPENG advertises a maximum DC rate of 451 kW and a 10–80% charge in 12 minutes. Tesla lists up to 175 kW Supercharging for the Model Y Standard RWD. The figures describe different manufacturer claims and do not guarantee the rate a driver will experience. Actual charging depends on factors including the battery’s state of charge, its temperature and the capability of the charger. A station rated below a car’s maximum cannot deliver that maximum, and the car will not necessarily sustain peak power throughout a session.

For regular long trips, map the charging options on routes you actually use and check that the sites are convenient for your stops. For home charging, confirm equipment compatibility with the vehicle and have the installation requirements assessed separately. Tesla lists a Wall Connector (£475) and Mobile Connector (£180) in its UK configurator; those are Tesla accessories, and that listing does not establish their compatibility with the G6.

Warranty terms
Look beyond the headline warranty duration. Tesla states four years or 60,000 miles for the Model Y Standard RWD basic vehicle warranty and eight years or 100,000 miles for its battery and drive unit. XPENG advertises a five-year G6 warranty on its UK page, but the cited product-page details do not establish the G6’s battery and drive-unit cover or all mileage limits and exclusions. Read the full terms for the exact version before treating the warranty as a deciding advantage.

Retailer and service access
XPENG said the updated G6 was available to experience at retailers nationwide at its March 2026 launch. That announcement does not tell you how convenient a retailer or service location is from your home, or establish the current location and availability of every service. Check the nearest suitable site, book a visit if possible, and ask how routine servicing and repairs are handled. Apply the same practical test to Tesla’s service access in your area.
Space, equipment and driver assistance
The figures covered here do not establish a complete comparison of passenger room, cargo capacity, standard equipment or driver-assistance systems. Inspect both cars with the people and luggage you regularly carry, and check the equipment included on the precise trims you are pricing. If a particular assistance feature matters, verify that it is available and usable in the UK rather than assuming a feature advertised in another market applies here.

In particular, Tesla says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not yet available in the UK. Do not count it as a currently usable UK Model Y feature; check Tesla’s UK Model Y page for the current position.
Which should you choose?
- Put the G6 first on your shortlist if its exact trim and current deal deliver the equipment you want, an XPENG retailer or service option is practical for you, and its charging characteristics fit the chargers you use. Treat the 451 kW peak and 12-minute claim as manufacturer figures, not a guarantee for every charging stop.
- Put the Model Y first on your shortlist if the exact Tesla configuration, price, warranty terms and local ownership arrangements suit you better. Its cited Standard RWD version has the same published WLTP range as the G6’s maximum figure, but that is not evidence of equal real-world efficiency or range.
- Keep both in contention if you have not compared the same kind of trim and purchase or finance terms. Test the cars, check live UK specifications and offers, and decide using your own regular routes, charging access and service needs.
For broader context, TechRadar’s May 2026 G6 road test discusses the updated model’s changes and drawbacks. It is useful as a road-test perspective, not a controlled comparison proving which current UK car has better range, charging or efficiency. City A.M.’s comparison also frames the decision around price, charging and technology; the right balance depends on the buyer and exact versions.
