SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare launch on October 1, 2026, sent Starfish Space’s first full-scale Otter servicing vehicle into low Earth orbit, beginning its mission for NASA’s SSPICY program. Otter has reached orbit and powered up, but its planned satellite inspections and any further servicing work lie ahead.
What happened on Transporter-18?
A Falcon 9 lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on October 1, 2026, carrying 130 payloads into low Earth orbit. Space.com reported that the first stage landed back at Vandenberg about 7.5 minutes after liftoff, completing its 25th flight. Payload deployment started about 54.5 minutes after launch and continued for roughly 11 minutes.

Starfish Space’s Otter was among the spacecraft deployed. GeekWire reported that it separated a little more than an hour after launch and powered up for orbital operations. Its solar arrays were folded for launch; the vehicle itself is roughly the size of a kitchen oven.
What is Starfish Space’s Otter?
Otter is a spacecraft designed to approach and service other satellites. The first full-scale vehicle is intended to rendezvous with and inspect a series of inoperable satellites for NASA’s Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability mission, known as SSPICY. GeekWire reported the mission’s value as $15 million.

- This model is a highly simulated SpaceX starship rocket model. The main body of the first-level super heavy booster is made of precision aluminum alloy tubes. The second-level starship is embedded with reinforced aluminum alloy tubes. The rest of the rocket materials are made of high-quality imported resin. Excellent laser forming ability and long-lasting storage

- Actual height: 32cm (the core diameter is 24mm, the real rocket is 9 meters in diameter) This ratio is the best choice for desktop placement
- Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
Inspection is the initial assignment, not a completed result: as of the October 1 launch coverage, Otter had powered up, while its SSPICY rendezvous and inspection work was still planned. Starfish says the vehicle’s broader roles can include extending satellite life and disposing of spacecraft at end of life.
Why does this launch matter for satellite servicing?
Starfish described the flight in its September 24, 2026 announcement as a shift from technology development to providing services for customers in orbit. Otter has both a customer and a mission: NASA’s SSPICY. After commissioning, the company plans to offer commercial services in low Earth orbit.

That distinction matters. A servicing vehicle must do more than reach orbit: it has to navigate to a target and perform a useful task in close proximity to it. SSPICY is intended to put Otter through commercial inspection work on multiple inoperable satellites. If successful, that experience could support later inspections of active spacecraft or work such as disposal. Those are potential applications, not outcomes established by this launch.

What has Starfish demonstrated before?
The full-scale Otter follows smaller Otter Pup demonstrations. In its Otter Pup 2 announcement, Starfish described rendezvous and proximity operations, along with an attempted docking with an unprepared commercial satellite in low Earth orbit. The company named CETACEAN computer-vision navigation, CEPHALOPOD guidance and control, and its Nautilus docking mechanism among the technologies used.

- Durable materials: This 1/400 scale SpaceX spaceship is lightweight and durable. The main body of the spaceship is made of pp and precision aluminum alloy. It is very suitable for desktop display
- Exquisite Details: The height of the rocket model is 4.9 inches and the diameter is 1.81 inches. It precisely reproduces the launch configuration of the rocket and captures every real detail of the authentic interstellar spacecraft
- Perfect Display or Gift: This complete rocket launch model brings the real space flight scene to life, making it an ideal choice for a desk or display stand. It creates a charming atmosphere for space enthusiasts and is the perfect gift for any space lover
- The Package Includes: This Starship model set includes a 1/400 scale Starship Rocket Model. Gift packaging is available. The complete kit vividly recreates the scene of the Starship
- Note: This model is suitable for desktop display and has fulfilled the dreams of every enthusiast. It is not applicable to children's toys
An attempted docking is not the same as a completed docking, and the Pup demonstrations are not proof that the new full-scale Otter has completed an inspection or docking. They provide relevant background on the technologies Starfish is developing for servicing missions.
How big was Transporter-18 compared with the rideshare record?
| Mission | Payload count | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Transporter-18 | 130 | Payloads carried to low Earth orbit on the October 1, 2026 launch, according to Space.com. |
| Transporter-1 | 143 | SpaceX rideshare payload record reported by Space.com; the mission launched in January 2021. |
Transporter-18 approached but did not surpass that record. Its payloads included Starfish’s Otter, a Google Project Suncatcher prototype, Cowboy Space’s Reason-1 power-beaming satellite, and other cubesats, microsats, hosted payloads and orbital-transfer vehicles.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
What comes next for Otter?
Commissioning comes before the planned SSPICY inspections. Starfish co-founder Trevor Bennett told GeekWire that the central mission goal is to provide inspection services to several spacecraft; he also described possible work beyond the initial assignment, including inspecting additional spacecraft or attempting further docking. Those possibilities depend on how the mission proceeds.
