Drivers who want to take a qualifying ultra-high-powered vehicle (UHPV) onto South Australian roads generally need a U-class licence. The requirement has applied since 1 December 2024. Drivers must complete the online course and be issued the U class before driving; there is no practical road assessment.

Which vehicles count as UHPVs?

South Australia defines a UHPV as a vehicle other than a bus, motorbike or motor trike, with a gross vehicle mass of up to 4.5 tonnes and a power-to-weight ratio of at least 276 kW per tonne. The threshold was set out in the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s 4 July 2024 announcement (official announcement).

Some vehicles marketed as supercars or hypercars meet the threshold; others do not. A badge or marketing category is not enough to determine the legal classification, and drivers are responsible for checking their vehicle.

How to check a vehicle’s power-to-weight ratio

My Licence recommends starting with the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website. If modifications may have changed the ratio, SA.GOV.AU says a dyno test and manual calculation may be needed. Check the official UHPV FAQ for guidance on classification.

Who needs the U class?

A person driving a qualifying UHPV on South Australian roads generally needs a U-class endorsement, in addition to a current full or probationary C-class licence. The requirement is for South Australian licence holders; the official FAQ says interstate visitors may drive on their interstate C-class licence.

The course is available only to South Australian licence holders. If you are unsure whether an exemption applies to your circumstances, check the current SA.GOV.AU exemptions guidance before driving.

How to complete the course and apply

  1. Enrol online: Sign in through a mySAGOV account using a browser and enrol in the U-class course.
  2. Complete the modules and assessment: Work through the interactive online material and pass the final assessment. The course includes knowledge quizzes; no on-road assessment is required.
  3. Apply for the U class: Submit the replacement-licence application and wait until the U class has been issued before driving a qualifying UHPV.

The online course covers UHPV risks, vehicle features that differ from ordinary vehicles, relevant laws, risk-taking behaviour and driver-assistance systems including Electronic Stability Control and Automated Emergency Braking. SA.GOV.AU says applicants have 12 months from enrolment to complete the course. See the current U-class application page for live steps and requirements.

Current fees and older published amounts

As checked on 8 October 2026, SA.GOV.AU lists a $67 course fee and a $22 replacement-licence fee on its application guidance. My Licence FAQ and application pages still show earlier amounts of $51 plus a $10 administration fee for the course and $20 for the replacement licence; the Legal Services Commission handbook also lists $61 for the course. These pages differ, so use the live SA.GOV.AU application and fee information when budgeting for a current transaction. The older figures are published references, not evidence that those pages have been formally withdrawn.

Exemptions and other rules

Driving for qualifying work

A full C-class licence holder may be exempt when required to drive a UHPV as part of work at a motor-vehicle-related workplace. Check the current exemption criteria with SA.GOV.AU; the exemption is not a general allowance for work-related driving.

Dealership test drives

A full C-class driver may take a restricted dealership test drive without holding the U class if a U-class-licensed dealership employee remains in the front passenger seat and supervises. The vehicle must not exceed 100 km/h and must comply with the posted speed limit.

It is prohibited to disable an automated intervention system in a UHPV. The 2024 DIT announcement states that disabling one can attract a maximum penalty of $5,000 and six demerit points.

What happens if you drive without the U class?

The My Licence FAQ, checked 8 October 2026, states that driving a UHPV without the required U class can result in a maximum $2,500 penalty for a first offence and one year’s imprisonment for a subsequent offence. The stated maximums are not a prediction of the penalty in an individual case. Review the current official FAQ for the applicable rule.

What the course results do—and do not—show

The South Australian Government’s Road Safety Action Plan 2023–2025 Annual Report 2024 recorded more than 3,300 course completions as at 20 February 2025. It also reported that over 75% of participants rated the course four or five stars. Those figures describe participation and participant ratings; they do not establish that the course reduced crashes.
