What happened to Sony’s AFEELA 1?
AFEELA 1 was the first planned vehicle from Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. On March 25, 2026, SHM announced that it would discontinue development and launch of AFEELA 1 and a second AFEELA model. The company said it had no viable path to bring the models to market as originally planned. Sony and Honda’s March 25 announcement attributed the change to Honda’s reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy, which altered assumptions about access to certain Honda technologies and assets.

What were the original price and launch plans?
At CES on January 6, 2025, SHM announced a starting price of $89,900. It anticipated official sales in California in 2025 and deliveries in mid-2026. What happens to AFEELA 1 reservations?
SHM said it would fully refund reservation fees paid by current AFEELA 1 reservation holders in California. Its March 25 statement did not specify a refund timetable or explain the individual refund process, so it does not establish when any particular holder’s payment was returned.
What did Sony and Honda announce after the cancellation?
In an April 21, 2026 update, Sony, Honda, and SHM said they would review SHM’s structure and scale down its operations. They said SHM employees were expected, in principle, to be reassigned to the parent companies and related entities. The companies also said discussions would continue about the optimal form of collaboration, including ways software might create new user experiences as advanced driver-assistance systems become more common. The April 21 announcement does not announce a replacement AFEELA car or confirm another vehicle for sale.
