Solid-State Battery or Capacitor? The Evidence Behind Donut Lab’s 100,000-Cycle Claim

Donut Lab’s ten-day retention test supports battery-like behavior, not simple-supercapacitor theory. But its 100,000-cycle, 400 Wh/kg, and solid-state claims remain unverified.

Short answer: Donut Lab’s device is better described as a battery-like energy-storage device than as a simple supercapacitor, but the public evidence does not independently prove that it is an all-solid-state, lithium-free battery capable of 100,000 cycles.

Donut Lab claims a 400 Wh/kg battery that can fully charge in as little as five minutes and last for up to 100,000 charge-discharge cycles. Those remain company claims. The available VTT testing supports fast charging and unusually low self-discharge, but it did not directly establish the headline energy-density or cycle-life figures. A separate expert investigation has also challenged the company’s public chemistry description.

The verdict in one sentence

As of August 11, 2026, the strongest defensible conclusion is this: Donut Lab has shown evidence of a fast-charging, battery-like device, but its 100,000-cycle life, 400 Wh/kg energy density, and advertised solid-state or lithium-free chemistry have not been independently verified in the public record.

That distinction matters because several different claims have become blended together. A device can charge quickly without being a capacitor. A cell can retain charge for ten days without being all-solid-state. A test on a damaged pouch can reveal useful failure behavior without proving—or disproving—the life of a healthy production cell.

For that reason, calling the product a proven 100,000-cycle solid-state battery goes beyond the evidence. Calling it a debunked capacitor also goes too far. The evidence answers some narrow questions and leaves the most consequential ones open.

What Donut Lab claims

In its January 5, 2026 CES announcement, Donut Lab presented the Donut Battery as an all-solid-state battery intended for OEM vehicle production. The company claimed minimal capacity fade, a design life of up to 100,000 cycles, operation across extreme temperatures, abundant materials, lower cost than conventional lithium-ion batteries, and custom form factors. The announcement is a description of Donut Lab’s commercial position, not an independent certification of those specifications. Donut Lab’s CES announcement contains the company’s original claims.

The company’s current battery page lists the following specifications and capabilities:

  • Up to 400 Wh/kg energy density
  • Full charging in as little as five minutes
  • Full charge-to-discharge operation
  • A design life of up to 100,000 cycles
  • No flammable liquid electrolyte
  • Scalable production and custom form factors

Donut Lab also says the battery is already deployed in real vehicles and development programs involving Verge Motorcycles, WattEV, and Cova Power’s smart-trailer platform. These should be treated as company statements unless a particular vehicle, battery specification, delivery record, and independent test are separately documented. Donut Lab’s battery page is the primary source for the current marketing language.

The CES announcement said Verge Motorcycles would use Donut batteries in 2026 TS Pro and Ultra models, with initial deliveries targeted for the first quarter of 2026. That was a dated company projection. Later reporting raised uncertainty around delivery and production timing, so the original Q1 schedule should not be presented as proof that customers received production motorcycles equipped with the claimed battery.

Why fast charging does not make something a capacitor

The basic comparison is often framed incorrectly. Batteries and capacitors both store electrical energy, but they do so through different mechanisms.

  • A battery stores energy through electrochemical reactions involving electrodes and an electrolyte. Its voltage typically changes over a relatively controlled discharge curve.
  • A conventional capacitor or supercapacitor stores energy through electric charge separation, with a voltage that generally falls more directly as the stored charge is removed.
  • A solid-state battery is still a battery; the term describes the electrolyte or cell architecture, not a separate category of energy storage.

Supercapacitors can accept very high charging power, so a five-minute charge is not proof of battery chemistry. Conversely, a battery with an unusual chemistry, electrode design, cooling system, or charging strategy can also charge very quickly. Charging speed alone cannot resolve the capacitor question.

The more informative properties are the discharge curve, self-discharge over time, energy density, voltage behavior, and the device’s response under controlled cycling. Even those measurements must be interpreted together. A battery-like discharge curve can show that a device behaves electrochemically, but it cannot identify the electrode materials or prove that the electrolyte is solid.

What the ten-day VTT test actually showed

Donut Lab published a test intended specifically to address the suggestion that its device was merely a supercapacitor. According to the company’s account of a VTT measurement, a cell was charged to approximately 50 percent, monitored for ten days at room temperature while connected to a tester, and then discharged in a capacity test. Donut Lab said the voltage stabilized rather than falling rapidly and linearly, and that the remaining energy corresponded to the measured watt-hour loss. Donut Lab’s self-discharge announcement describes the company’s interpretation.

Reporting on the VTT test series put the retained charge at approximately 97.7 percent after ten days. That is evidence of battery-like charge retention and is inconsistent with the behavior expected from a simple, highly self-discharging supercapacitor under comparable conditions.

The careful conclusion is therefore:

The test supports the conclusion that the tested device was not behaving like a simple supercapacitor. It does not prove the device’s chemistry, energy density, solid-state architecture, or cycle life.

Those are separate questions. A battery may use a liquid, gel, polymer, hybrid, or solid electrolyte. A ten-day retention test does not determine which one. Nor does it establish whether the tested cell was representative of the product Donut Lab says it will manufacture for vehicles.

What VTT’s involvement does—and does not—mean

VTT, Finland’s Technical Research Centre, confirmed that it performed measurements on Donut Lab’s battery in its laboratory and that Donut Lab would publish the results as a series. VTT’s involvement establishes that measurements were conducted by a major research organization. It does not mean VTT independently endorsed every specification on Donut Lab’s website. VTT’s announcement explains the testing relationship.

The publicly discussed VTT sequence included several different tests:

Test Reported result What it supports What it does not establish
Fast charging Approximately 80 percent charge in about 4.5 minutes at an 11C rate Evidence of very high charging performance under the reported conditions A five-minute full charge in every vehicle or proof of solid-state chemistry
High-temperature discharge Test performed at approximately 100°C; the pouch reportedly lost vacuum afterward Information about behavior under extreme thermal stress That the production battery can safely operate indefinitely at that temperature
Self-discharge Approximately 97.7 percent charge retained after ten days Battery-like charge retention rather than simple-supercapacitor behavior Electrolyte type, electrode chemistry, energy density, or cycle life
Vehicle pack charging A Verge TS Pro motorcycle pack charged at roughly 100 kW Evidence that a pack-level high-power charging demonstration occurred Cell-level 400 Wh/kg energy density or 100,000-cycle durability
5C cycling Capacity reportedly fell 54.66 percent after 50 cycles Failure information from a compromised sample A fair estimate of the life of a healthy production cell

Electrek’s review of the five VTT reports noted that they did not directly test either Donut Lab’s 400 Wh/kg energy-density claim or its 100,000-cycle-life claim. The report review is available from Electrek.

The damaged-cell cycling result needs careful interpretation

The most easily misunderstood result is the 5C cycling test. The cell used for that test had reportedly lost pouch vacuum during the earlier high-temperature experiment. The subsequent cycling work was intended to assess what happened when that compromised sample was cycled.

After 50 cycles at 5C, the cell had reportedly lost 54.66 percent of its capacity. That result does not justify saying that every Donut battery lasts only 50 cycles. A failed pouch seal, loss of vacuum, moisture exposure, internal mechanical damage, or thermal abuse could make the sample unrepresentative of a healthy cell.

But the result also cannot be used to support the 100,000-cycle promise. A damaged-cell test is not a completed durability demonstration, and it does not answer the question investors, automakers, and customers actually need answered: how does a healthy, production-representative cell perform over a defined number of cycles under ordinary operating conditions?

The accurate editorial formulation is that the test failed to validate the headline durability claim, while not providing a fair standalone estimate of normal-cell life.

What does “100,000 cycles” mean?

A cycle-life number is meaningful only when its test definition is published. At minimum, a credible 100,000-cycle claim should identify:

  • The number of cells tested and whether they were production-representative
  • The beginning-of-life capacity and the method used to measure it
  • The end-of-life threshold, such as 80 percent or another defined percentage of original capacity
  • Charge and discharge C-rates
  • Depth of discharge and whether a cycle means a full cycle or equivalent full cycles
  • Upper and lower voltage limits
  • Temperature and thermal-control conditions
  • Rest periods, balancing strategy, and test interruptions
  • Statistical variation among samples
  • Failure criteria, safety events, swelling, impedance growth, and post-test inspection

“Designed for up to 100,000 cycles” is not the same as “a healthy production cell has completed 100,000 cycles while retaining a specified percentage of its capacity.” The former is a design objective or life expectation. The latter is a demonstrated test result.

The word cycle also needs definition. In battery engineering, one full equivalent cycle can represent cumulative charge throughput equal to 100 percent of the battery’s rated capacity, even if that throughput is accumulated through several partial cycles. A headline number without the depth-of-discharge and capacity-retention criteria can therefore sound more precise than it is.

The public material reviewed for this article does not show a completed 100,000-cycle test on a healthy production cell with all of those conditions disclosed. VTT’s fast-charge and self-discharge tests should not be conflated with cycle-life validation.

The chemistry dispute is more serious than the capacitor question

The capacitor theory concerns how the device stores and retains energy. The later chemistry dispute concerns what the device is actually made of.

In June 2026, Electrek summarized an investigation led by battery researcher Ziroth and involving more than 20 independent battery experts. The investigators examined publicly available voltage and expansion data and argued that the voltage curves were consistent with high-nickel lithium-ion behavior. They also identified a kink in the expansion curve that they associated with graphite staging, a characteristic feature of graphite-anode lithium-ion cells.

The investigation interpreted those signatures as evidence that the tested cell was lithium-ion rather than the lithium-free sodium-ion solid-state cell described in earlier public discussions. It also estimated the cell’s energy density at approximately 298 Wh/kg, below Donut Lab’s claimed 400 Wh/kg. Electrek’s account of the chemistry investigation provides the available public details.

This is a substantial technical challenge, not merely online speculation: it is based on electrochemical and mechanical signatures reviewed by named technical experts. However, it should still be described as an external investigation, not as a final legal or scientific adjudication. The available record does not include a peer-reviewed paper or regulator’s final finding that conclusively identifies the chemistry of every commercial Donut cell.

A report by Science Norway quoted an NTNU battery researcher making a related point: each individual performance target might be achievable in isolation, but the central concern is whether all of the claims can be achieved simultaneously in one affordable, manufacturable product. The report also said that criticism came from researchers and competitors and that Donut Lab did not respond to the publication’s questions. Science Norway’s report contains that discussion.

The complaint and Donut Lab’s response

In April 2026, Donut Lab and Nordic Nano issued a statement concerning a private individual’s criminal complaint. Reporting described the complaint as alleging misleading public statements about energy density, durability, and production capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Donut Lab denied fraudulent behavior and said it was conducting additional third-party testing. The existence of a complaint is not proof that wrongdoing occurred, and the company’s denial is part of the relevant record. The statement should therefore be presented as a dispute involving allegations and a corporate response—not as a finding of fraud. Donut Lab and Nordic Nano’s statement is the primary source for the company’s response.

What evidence would settle the question?

The uncertainty is not difficult to define. Donut Lab or an independent laboratory would need to publish enough information for engineers to reproduce and audit the central claims. The most important evidence would include:

  1. A healthy, production-representative sample set. Testing should cover multiple cells from the intended production process, not only a laboratory prototype or a cell damaged during an earlier test.
  2. Transparent gravimetric energy-density measurements. The test should state whether 400 Wh/kg refers to the active cell, pouch cell, module, or complete vehicle pack, and should disclose what components are included in the mass.
  3. A genuine long-duration cycling program. The report should show charge and discharge rates, depth of discharge, temperature, rest periods, sample count, capacity-retention threshold, and failures throughout the test.
  4. Independent chemistry characterization. Techniques such as materials analysis, teardown, electrode identification, and electrolyte characterization would help establish whether the product matches its public chemistry description.
  5. Clear separation between demonstration and production specification. The cell used in a fast-charge demonstration must be shown to be the same chemistry and specification intended for commercial vehicles.
  6. Delivery and vehicle documentation. If Verge motorcycles or other products are described as using the battery, customers and evaluators need confirmation that delivered vehicles contain the claimed production pack rather than a conventional or interim battery.

For an OEM, investor, or fleet operator, the missing step is independent battery testing that covers both energy density and cycle life, not only a selected charging demonstration. A laboratory’s name matters less than the test scope, sample condition, instrumentation, raw data, and clearly defined pass-fail criteria.

What this means for EV buyers and automakers

Consumers should not make a purchase decision based solely on the 100,000-cycle headline. Until the claims are independently established, the practical questions are more ordinary:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the vehicle actually available for delivery in the buyer’s region?
  • Which battery chemistry and pack specification are installed in the delivered vehicle?
  • What warranty covers capacity loss, charging faults, and pack replacement?
  • What charging equipment is required to achieve the advertised rate?
  • Does the five-minute figure mean a partial charge, an 80 percent charge, or a full charge from an explicitly defined starting state?
  • What happens to charging speed and battery life in cold or hot weather?
  • Is the claimed range based on a cell, pack, or complete vehicle test?

Automakers need an even higher standard. Cell-level claims do not automatically translate to a safe, durable vehicle pack. Pack design adds busbars, cooling or heating systems, battery-management electronics, structural materials, contactors, fuses, insulation, and safety systems. Those parts affect weight, cost, usable energy, charging power, and service life.

The reported 100 kW Verge TS Pro charging demonstration may be relevant evidence of pack-level power handling, but it does not independently establish cell-level energy density or 100,000-cycle durability. A vehicle demonstration is useful; it is not a substitute for a complete cell and pack validation program.

Bottom line: battery-like, but not yet proven as advertised

The capacitor question has a relatively narrow answer. Donut Lab’s reported ten-day retention test supports the view that the tested device was not a simple supercapacitor. Rapid charging and a battery-like discharge response point in the same direction.

The bigger claims remain unresolved. Publicly described VTT testing demonstrated or explored fast charging, high-temperature behavior, charge retention, pack-level charging, and cycling of a compromised sample. It did not independently verify 400 Wh/kg or 100,000 cycles. The expert chemistry investigation further challenged the advertised solid-state and lithium-free description, although that challenge has not been established as a final peer-reviewed or regulatory finding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fairest description is therefore Donut Lab’s claimed solid-state battery or a battery-like energy-storage device under investigation. The evidence does not justify calling it a proven 100,000-cycle battery, a confirmed solid-state battery, or a fraud. Those conclusions require the transparent production-cell data that has not yet been publicly demonstrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Donut Lab’s fast charging prove that the device is a capacitor?

No. Supercapacitors can charge quickly, but batteries can also charge quickly. The more relevant evidence is the reported ten-day self-discharge test, which supports battery-like charge retention and argues against the device being a simple supercapacitor. It does not identify the chemistry or prove a solid-state design.

Has Donut Lab independently demonstrated 100,000 charge cycles?

Not in the public evidence covered here. Donut Lab describes up to 100,000 cycles as a design-life claim, but the publicly discussed VTT reports did not directly test that figure on a healthy production-representative cell with a published capacity-retention threshold and complete test conditions.

Does the 54.66 percent capacity loss after 50 cycles prove Donut batteries fail quickly?

No. The tested pouch had reportedly lost vacuum during an earlier high-temperature test, so it was a compromised sample. The result should not be generalized to every healthy cell. It also cannot be used to validate the 100,000-cycle claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What would prove Donut Lab’s chemistry and durability claims?

The strongest evidence would be independent characterization of the electrodes and electrolyte, transparent energy-density measurements that define what mass is included, and long-duration cycling of multiple healthy production-representative cells with disclosed C-rates, temperature, depth of discharge, capacity-retention criteria, and failure data.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Donut Lab has presented evidence of a fast-charging, battery-like device rather than a simple capacitor. But as of August 11, 2026, the public record does not independently verify its 100,000-cycle life, 400 Wh/kg energy density, or advertised solid-state and lithium-free chemistry.
