Slate Truck EV First Look: For Every Question It Answered, a Bigger One Emerged

Slate’s $24,950 electric truck answers the price question but raises bigger ones about real-world range, modular costs, production, safety, service, and whether radical simplicity works for everyday buyers.

Slate has finally answered the headline question: the Blank Slate Truck is projected to start at $24,950, plus a separate $1,450 destination charge. That puts the advertised pre-option subtotal at $26,400—not the under-$20,000 effective price suggested at the April 2025 reveal. Slate also now projects 205 miles of range and expects first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Those are important answers, but they change the central question. The Slate is no longer mainly a story about an almost impossibly cheap electric pickup. It is a test of whether a startup can make radical simplicity, owner-installed customization, and a small electric utility vehicle work as a durable ownership proposition. The truck remains preproduction, its specifications can change, and its range, safety rating, charging performance, and real-world usefulness are not yet independently validated.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The short version

The Slate Truck is a deliberately simple, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup that begins as a two-seat truck and can eventually become a five-seat SUV, an open-air vehicle, or a cargo-oriented configuration. It has physical controls, crank windows, no central touchscreen, a relatively small footprint, a single battery option, and a planned accessory ecosystem that lets owners add only what they want.

That formula could appeal to city drivers, light-duty users, small businesses, and fleets that want an uncomplicated electric vehicle. It is a poor match for buyers who need four doors immediately, long road-trip range, heavy towing, premium refinement, or a fully equipped cabin straight from the factory.

The most important caveat is evidence. Slate has a preproduction vehicle, official projections, a preorder process, and promising early ride-along impressions. It does not yet have customer deliveries, a published EPA range rating, an official five-star crash result, or enough independent testing to establish how the truck behaves in real-world conditions.

Slate’s current price is $24,950—but that is not the drive-away price

Slate’s June 2026 pricing update lists the Blank Slate Truck at $24,950. The company lists a separate $1,450 destination charge, bringing the advertised subtotal to $26,400 before taxes, registration, options, accessories, installation, financing, and insurance.

Item Amount
Blank Slate Truck base price $24,950
Destination charge $1,450
Subtotal before taxes and options $26,400
Conversion kits and accessories Not fully established

That is materially different from the original reveal’s proposed effective price below $20,000. The earlier figure depended on the availability of a federal EV tax credit. Because that incentive later ceased to be a reliable part of the pricing story—and Slate removed the under-$20,000 language—the old figure should not be used as the current purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slate began accepting preorders on June 24, 2026. The preorder requires a $300 non-refundable deposit. People who held the earlier $50 reservation can pay a reduced $250 preorder deposit, and the deposit is credited toward the final purchase price. A reservation or preorder is not a delivered vehicle, and the non-refundable nature of the preorder deposit makes the company’s final timing, specifications, and option pricing especially important to prospective buyers.

What changed since the April 2025 reveal?

  1. The price became concrete. The original presentation emphasized an effective price below $20,000, while current official materials list $24,950 before the destination charge and other costs.
  2. The range projection increased. Slate has moved from an estimated 150 miles to a projected 205 miles.
  3. The battery strategy became simpler. Current information points to one battery pack of roughly 63–64 kWh rather than the previously discussed two-pack approach.
  4. The tax-credit premise weakened. The original sub-$20,000 framing depended on an incentive that can no longer be treated as a dependable component of the vehicle’s advertised price.
  5. The buying process advanced. Slate moved from reservations to a preorder system with a non-refundable deposit.
  6. The business question changed. The key issue is now less whether Slate has an intriguing prototype and more whether it can manufacture, deliver, service, and support a highly configurable vehicle at the promised price.

Slate reported more than 100,000 refundable reservations within two weeks of the 2025 reveal, more than 150,000 by December 2025, and more than 180,000 around the June 2026 pricing announcement, according to reporting from TechCrunch and Axios. Those figures demonstrate substantial initial interest. They do not establish how many people will convert to non-refundable preorders, signed purchase agreements, or delivered vehicles.

It is one platform, not a normal lineup of trims

Slate describes the product as a single electric pickup platform rather than a conventional range of trim levels. Every vehicle begins as a two-seat pickup, but buyers can have it delivered as—or later convert it into—several different configurations:

  • Blank Slate Truck: the basic two-seat pickup.
  • Squareback SUV: a five-seat, more upright passenger configuration.
  • Fastback SUV: a five-seat configuration with a more sloped rear profile.
  • Open Air: a configuration intended to provide a more exposed, recreational layout.
  • Cargo Kit: a utility-oriented configuration for carrying equipment and goods.

The distinction matters because the low starting price does not represent every version of the vehicle. Road & Track reported that a five-seat SUV conversion could push the price to roughly $30,000 before destination and options. That figure is a reported estimate rather than a final universal price list, but it illustrates the economic tension: once the buyer adds seats, body kits, interior equipment, and convenience features, the Slate will compete with ordinary vehicles that already include those basics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slate says the body panels use a replaceable composite construction. The platform is designed around body-style kits, wraps, and accessories, giving owners the possibility of changing the vehicle over time instead of trading it in for a different trim. This is more meaningful than a choice of wheel designs or software themes. It could make collision repair and personalization easier, but it also means the cost and availability of the replacement parts will be central to the ownership experience.

Projected specifications

The following figures combine Slate’s current official information with independent reporting. They are not all certified production specifications.

Slate identifies the vehicle as preproduction and says specifications are subject to change. The careful wording is therefore “Slate projects 205 miles” or “Slate estimates 205 miles,” not “the Slate has a 205-mile EPA range.” The same caution applies to payload, towing, charging time, battery capacity, and motor output.

What those numbers mean in practice

It is genuinely small for a pickup

At roughly 174.6 inches long and 70.6 inches wide, the Slate is considerably smaller than mainstream midsize and full-size pickups. Its footprint should make it easier to park and maneuver in urban environments, while the short wheelbase and compact body suit errands, light work, and recreational use.

That compactness is part of the appeal, but it is also a limitation. The Slate is not a replacement for a conventional work truck simply because it has a bed, a 1,550-pound projected payload, and a 2,000-pound projected towing capacity. The short bed, single-motor rear-drive layout, modest battery, and limited towing ceiling point toward light-duty use rather than heavy hauling.

205 miles could be enough—or not

For a driver with predictable daily mileage and reliable home charging, a projected 205 miles may be perfectly workable. For a buyer who regularly drives long highway distances, carries heavy cargo, or tows, the usable range could be much lower than the headline projection. Highway speed, cold temperatures, payload, elevation, wind, tire choice, and towing all affect an electric vehicle’s consumption.

There is currently no production-vehicle evidence for the Slate’s highway range, winter range, range while towing, or range with a body-style conversion installed. Those are not minor details; they will determine whether the truck is a practical daily vehicle or a short-range second vehicle for many buyers.

Charging looks adequate on paper

Slate says a DC fast charger can take the battery from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes, with a peak charging rate of 120 kW. It estimates a full Level 2 charge in approximately four hours. Those targets sound reasonable for a compact EV, but they remain manufacturer-provided estimates until independent testing confirms the charging curve, not merely the peak rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prospective owners should also confirm what charging equipment is included, what electrical requirements apply, and whether the final vehicle supports the same charging hardware as the preproduction models. The NACS port is established in current materials, but that alone does not answer every home-charging question. Buyers should not purchase a portable EVSE or NACS cable until Slate publishes final connector, amperage, and included-equipment details.

The screen-free cabin is not a gimmick; it is the central trade-off

The Slate intentionally leaves out features that have become normal in modern vehicles. Early reporting described crank windows, physical heating and air-conditioning controls, little conventional interior trim, and no central touchscreen. Navigation and entertainment are expected to come from the owner’s phone rather than a built-in infotainment system.

That approach has real advantages. Physical controls are easy to understand, do not depend on a large screen, and may be less expensive to repair than an integrated infotainment system. A sparse cabin can also make the Slate feel more like a useful tool than a rolling electronics package.

This suction phone cradle obtained CP65 / REACH / RoHS safety certifications

But minimalism transfers responsibility to the owner. A buyer who wants navigation, streaming audio, hands-free calling, phone charging, storage, or a more finished cabin will need to supply some of that equipment. A car phone mount may be a practical companion purchase for phone-based navigation, but it should be treated as aftermarket equipment—not an official Slate accessory—and buyers will need to verify whether a dashboard, vent, or windshield mount fits the final interior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant question is not whether fewer features are automatically better. It is whether the buyer genuinely does not need the features removed. Someone who immediately adds a phone mount, audio equipment, extra storage, upgraded trim, weather protection, and other accessories may erase much of the price advantage while still owning a vehicle without the integration of a conventional factory system.

Early ride impressions are encouraging but limited

Edmunds rode in a Slate prototype with a Slate engineer driving. Its account found room for two large adults, a cabin that felt more finished than earlier prototypes, and a reasonably compliant ride. Edmunds also noted obvious wind noise at around 45 mph and withheld broader judgment until a proper test-track evaluation and range testing could be completed.

That is useful evidence about packaging and prototype progress, but it is not a road test. A passenger ride cannot establish braking performance, steering feel, highway stability, thermal management, energy consumption, or long-term comfort.

Road & Track raised a particularly important engineering question: Slate has disclosed that the same suspension tuning will be used across the different configurations. A suspension that works acceptably for an empty pickup may not feel the same with a passenger body, an open-air configuration, or a cargo kit. The final effect on ride quality, handling, payload behavior, and owner expectations cannot be determined from the available ride-along coverage.

Safety equipment is planned, but a five-star rating has not been achieved

Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star U.S. NCAP crash rating. Its listed safety equipment includes:

  • Traction control
  • Electronic stability control
  • Forward-collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Airbags
  • A backup camera
  • Pedestrian identification
  • Automatic high beams

“Designed to achieve” is a target, not a published NHTSA result. Until the production vehicle is tested and an official rating is released, the Slate should not be described as a five-star vehicle. The same distinction applies to its driver-assistance behavior: listed equipment does not tell us how well the systems perform in varied weather, lighting, traffic, or road conditions.

The business model is bigger than selling an inexpensive truck

Slate says its vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan, and assembled in Indiana. Reporting has identified a former printing plant in Warsaw, Indiana, as the intended manufacturing site. Slate’s current materials place first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026, or late 2026, but the vehicle remains preproduction.

The company’s economics appear to depend on more than the initial vehicle sale. Slate is emphasizing:

However, the model introduces several execution challenges. Slate must manufacture the base vehicle consistently, supply conversion kits at sensible prices, make installations straightforward, maintain quality across multiple configurations, stock replacement panels, provide software support, and establish a service network. A low purchase price is less compelling if a damaged body panel takes months to replace or if a conversion requires expensive specialist labor.

Fleet customers may be especially interested in the Cargo Kit and simple body construction, but fleet buyers will demand evidence about uptime, service coverage, payload behavior, parts logistics, and total operating cost. None of those questions can be answered by reservation totals or a prototype ride.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

The larger questions Slate still has to answer

1. Can the advertised price survive production?

The $24,950 starting price is now official guidance, but it is not yet a delivered customer transaction. Final destination costs, taxes, options, accessories, conversion labor, financing, insurance, and service expenses will define the real cost. The SUV versions may be particularly revealing because they will show how much buyers must spend to turn the basic truck into a conventional passenger vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Will 205 miles become a certified, usable range?

The range projection needs to become an EPA figure, then be tested in conditions that matter to owners. Buyers need to know the result at highway speeds, in cold weather, with a full payload, and with each major body configuration. Towing range is an especially important unknown because even a 2,000-pound trailer can significantly reduce an EV’s range.

3. Does one suspension calibration work for every Slate?

Using one suspension setup across several body and utility configurations could reduce complexity and cost. It could also create compromises in ride, handling, load carrying, and body control. Production testing will need to show whether the common calibration is genuinely versatile or merely acceptable in each role.

4. Can Slate scale in Indiana?

Startups routinely produce attractive prototypes long before they demonstrate repeatable, profitable manufacturing. Slate must validate its assembly process, body-panel fit, battery quality, crash performance, software, supplier network, and parts pipeline. The transition from a small number of preproduction vehicles to customer-volume production is one of the biggest risks in the entire project.

5. Will simplicity remain inexpensive after buyers customize it?

The accessory-first philosophy is persuasive when the add-ons are affordable, available, and easy to install. It becomes less persuasive if buyers must spend thousands of dollars to obtain basic comfort, weather protection, passenger capacity, or infotainment. The final accessory catalog and installation prices may matter almost as much as the base truck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. How many reservations become deliveries?

Reservation totals measure attention and early intent, not sales. The meaningful funnel will be the number of refundable reservations converted into non-refundable preorders, the number of orders that survive final pricing and financing, and the number of vehicles actually delivered to customers.

7. What happens after the warranty period?

Slate’s replaceable composite panels could improve repairability, but that benefit depends on long-term parts availability and reasonable pricing. Buyers should ask how panels are sourced, who installs conversion kits, how software updates are delivered, where warranty work is performed, and what happens if the company’s accessory ecosystem does not reach the planned scale.

Who should consider the Slate?

The strongest prospective buyer is someone who:

  • Wants a small electric utility vehicle rather than a conventional pickup.
  • Can charge at home or has dependable nearby charging.
  • Drives predictable daily distances.
  • Needs light-duty hauling, occasional towing, or a compact cargo platform.
  • Likes physical controls and does not need a built-in touchscreen.
  • Is comfortable adding or changing equipment over time.
  • Understands that the initial vehicle and the desired finished configuration may be different purchases.

Small businesses and fleets may also find the concept interesting, especially if the Cargo Kit, service network, and operating costs work as promised. They should wait for production payload data, charging behavior under work use, warranty terms, parts support, and actual fleet pricing before treating it as a business case.

Who should probably look elsewhere?

The Slate is a weak fit for buyers who need:

  • Four-door access immediately, without paying for a conversion.
  • Long-distance road-trip capability.
  • Quiet highway refinement.
  • Heavy towing or substantial trailer range.
  • Premium comfort and a finished interior.
  • Factory navigation, integrated audio, and conventional infotainment.
  • Strong confidence in a mature service and parts network today.
  • A fully tested, production-certified vehicle rather than a preproduction product.

For those buyers, a larger and more conventional EV or gasoline pickup may be more expensive up front but less compromised in daily use.

What to verify before placing—or keeping—a preorder

  1. Final delivered price: Get the destination charge, taxes, registration, accessories, conversion kits, and installation costs in writing.
  2. EPA range: Look for the official rating, not only the 205-mile projection.
  3. Real-world test results: Check highway, cold-weather, payload, and towing tests performed on production vehicles.
  4. Included equipment: Confirm whether charging cables, a phone-mount solution, floor protection, weather equipment, and other basics are included.
  5. Charging requirements: Verify the final NACS hardware, Level 2 amperage, home electrical requirements, and DC fast-charging curve.
  6. Conversion pricing: Find out whether kits can be owner-installed, whether Slate installation is required, and whether converting back is practical.
  7. Safety results: Wait for official crash-test results and independent evaluations of the driver-assistance systems.
  8. Service coverage: Identify where warranty repairs, body-panel replacement, battery work, and software support will be handled.
  9. Deposit terms: Understand the non-refundable $300 preorder deposit, the $250 amount for earlier reservation holders, and the circumstances under which delivery timing or specifications can change.
  10. Insurance and financing: Obtain individualized quotes rather than assuming the low base price will produce low ownership costs.

For pickup users, a pickup bed cargo net or tie-down system could be useful for light-duty loads, but final bed dimensions, anchor locations, and fitment should be confirmed before buying any cargo-control equipment.

Slate’s official materials Current price, destination charge, projected range, planned configurations, dimensions, charging targets, safety equipment, and expected delivery timing Final EPA range, official crash rating, production quality, or guaranteed delivery date
Independent early coverage Prototype packaging, room for two large adults, improving finish, a reasonably compliant ride, and wind noise around 45 mph Full driving dynamics, highway comfort, braking, towing, winter performance, or long-term durability
Reservations and preorders Strong initial interest and a more advanced purchase process Sales volume, production readiness, profitability, or customer-delivery success

That evidence supports cautious optimism. Slate appears to have a coherent product philosophy, and the vehicle’s small dimensions, physical controls, and modular body concept give it a distinct reason to exist. But the most consequential claims remain forward-looking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Slate Truck EV cost?

Slate currently projects 205 miles of range from an approximately 63–64-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. That is a projection, not a final EPA-certified rating.

Is the Slate Truck available yet?

No. Slate’s current materials identify the vehicle as preproduction and expect first deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026. Specifications and timing remain subject to change.

Does the Slate Truck have a touchscreen?

The base vehicle is designed without a central touchscreen. It uses physical heating and air-conditioning controls and expects the owner’s phone to provide navigation and entertainment.

How many seats does the Slate Truck have?

The vehicle begins as a two-seat pickup. Buyers can add or select conversion kits intended to create five-seat Squareback or Fastback SUV configurations, among other layouts.

Can the Slate Truck tow?

Slate’s reported target is approximately 2,000 pounds of maximum towing. That is light-duty capability, and towing range and final certified limits remain unverified.

The Bottom Line

The Slate Truck has become more credible, but not yet less risky. The current $24,950 price, projected 205-mile range, compact dimensions, physical controls, and conversion strategy give it a clear identity. They also expose the unanswered questions: what the finished vehicle will cost, how far it will really go, whether one suspension setup can serve every configuration, how well it will be built, and whether parts and service will be available at scale.

For a buyer who wants a small, simple, customizable EV and can tolerate first-generation compromises, the Slate is one of the more distinctive upcoming vehicles to watch. For anyone seeking a fully proven replacement for a conventional pickup, the responsible answer is to wait for EPA certification, crash testing, production vehicles, independent range and towing tests, final accessory pricing, and evidence that Slate can deliver beyond the prototype stage.
