The company’s current advertised starting price for the two-seat Blank Slate is $24,950, or $26,400 after the stated destination charge and before taxes, registration, documentation fees, options, and any state incentives. The original under-$20,000 figure depended on federal incentives that are generally unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
The Slate remains a preproduction, single-motor electric pickup. It is expected to begin deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a projected 205-mile range, up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity, and a 1,550-pound payload rating. Those figures remain subject to final certification and production changes.

What changed with Slate Auto’s electric pickup?
Slate Auto’s April 24, 2025 announcement created headlines with a radically simple electric pickup that was expected to cost less than $20,000 after federal incentives. That description was conditional from the beginning: Slate said the vehicle was still in preproduction, warned that specifications and pricing could change, and described its range figures as projections rather than official EPA estimates.

| Item | Original launch information | Current company information |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | Expected below $20,000 after eligible federal incentives | $24,950 before destination, taxes, fees, options and incentives |
| Vehicle plus destination | Not established | $26,400, including the $1,450 destination charge |
| Range | 150-mile target | 205-mile projected estimate |
| Towing | 1,000-pound target | Up to 2,000 pounds projected |
| Payload | 1,433-pound target | 1,550 pounds projected |
| Deliveries | Not established | Expected in Q4 2026 |
The most important correction is therefore simple: the Slate is not currently a $20,000 electric truck at the advertised sticker price. Its current minimum advertised vehicle-and-destination price is $26,400, and it is not yet a production vehicle available for immediate delivery.
Current price: $24,950, or $26,400 before taxes and fees
Slate currently lists the base two-seat pickup, called the Blank Slate, at $24,950. The destination charge is $1,450, producing a minimum advertised total of $26,400 before:
- Sales or use tax
- Title, license and registration charges
- Dealer or documentation fees, where applicable
- Optional equipment and conversion kits
- Delivery-related or government charges not included in the advertised price
Slate says its $300 preorder deposit is credited toward the purchase price. Preorders are open, and the company says delivery windows are filling. That is not the same as an immediate purchase or a guaranteed delivery date: Slate still describes the vehicle as preproduction and expects first deliveries in Q4 2026.
Anyone considering a preorder should review the current reservation terms carefully, including whether the deposit is refundable, when a final configuration is selected, when the remaining balance is due, and what happens if the production vehicle differs from the reservation description.
Why the original under-$20,000 claim became misleading
The original pricing language was based on an expected vehicle price below $20,000 after federal incentives. Slate’s launch announcement directed buyers to the IRS for eligibility and did not present $20,000 as an unconditional manufacturer sticker price.
The IRS now states that the new, used and commercial clean-vehicle credits are not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The transition rule is important but narrow: a buyer who entered a binding written contract and made a payment by the deadline may retain eligibility when the vehicle is placed in service, subject to the applicable requirements. A normal buyer placing a new Slate preorder in 2026 should not assume that the former federal credit applies.
In practical terms, the $20,000 headline should be treated as a historical, incentive-dependent launch estimate. It should not be used as the ordinary price of a 2026 Slate purchase.

State and local incentives may still exist for some buyers, but they vary by location, income, vehicle qualifications, program funding and purchase date. A credible net-price calculation must identify the exact program and the buyer’s eligibility. Without that information, the useful comparison is $26,400 before taxes, fees and options—not $20,000.
What Slate is building
The Slate is designed as one simple two-door, two-seat electric pickup platform rather than a range of conventional trims. Buyers start with the basic pickup and can add equipment or convert the vehicle over time.

Slate’s current materials identify several configurations and kits:
- Blank Slate: the basic two-seat electric pickup.
- Squareback: a five-seat SUV-style conversion.
- Fastback: another five-seat SUV-style configuration.
- Open Air Kit: equipment intended to create a more open vehicle experience.
- Cargo Kit: utility-focused equipment for carrying goods.
The company’s central pitch is that an owner can adapt the same vehicle as needs change instead of replacing a small pickup with a larger SUV. A buyer might begin with a simple work vehicle, add seating later, or configure it for recreation and cargo.
That is a potentially valuable ownership model, but it remains prospective. Production customers still need to determine how difficult the conversions are, how much they cost, whether they affect payload or range, how durable the added components are, and how much labor or specialized service is required.
Current range, motor and charging information
Slate currently lists a projected 205-mile range for the standard vehicle. The company says this represents a 37 percent increase over its earlier 150-mile target. It is not an official EPA-estimated range rating. Slate says the estimate is based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle, and the vehicle remains in preproduction.
The truck uses a single rear electric motor and NACS charging. Current company charging estimates are:
| Charging method | Slate’s stated estimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1, 120-volt household outlet | About 2–5 miles of range per hour | Useful for low-mileage overnight charging, but slow for regularly replacing a large amount of energy |
| Level 2 home charging | About 25–35 miles per hour; approximately 4–8 hours for a full charge | The practical home-charging choice for many owners with suitable electrical service |
| Level 3 DC fast charging at 120 kW | Approximately 30 minutes from 20 to 80 percent | Useful on longer trips, with actual speeds affected by temperature, battery state and the final production system |
Because the connector is NACS, buyers planning home charging can compare a NACS home EV charger, but they should confirm final vehicle compatibility, charging specifications and electrical requirements before buying. A permanently installed Level 2 unit may require a qualified electrician, a suitable circuit and possible electrical-panel work. The charger’s advertised power does not guarantee that the vehicle will accept that power.
A portable NACS EV charger or Level 1 charging cable may be useful as backup equipment or for charging from a suitable household outlet. It should not be treated as a substitute for a properly installed Level 2 home charger when the owner regularly drives more than the slow Level 1 rate can replenish.
What happened to the original battery and range targets?
Slate’s April 2025 launch materials listed a 52.7-kWh standard battery, a 150-kW rear-wheel-drive powertrain, and a 150-mile range target. They also discussed a possible 84.3-kWh accessory battery with a 240-mile target.
Those figures should now be read as launch-era targets, not guaranteed final specifications. The company subsequently increased the standard projected range to 205 miles, while also warning that the vehicle’s specifications may change. Slate’s current materials do not turn the earlier 84.3-kWh accessory battery and 240-mile figure into a confirmed production option.
Until Slate publishes final certification and production specifications, buyers should avoid using the old battery numbers to estimate charging time, towing range, operating cost or highway-trip capability.

Towing and payload: better targets, but not final ratings
The current projected figures are up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity and 1,550 pounds of payload. Both are improvements over the original launch targets of 1,000 pounds of towing and 1,433 pounds of payload.

Those numbers could make the Slate useful for light utility work, small trailers, motorcycles, landscaping equipment or recreational gear. They do not make it equivalent to a larger electric or gasoline pickup. A 2,000-pound maximum tow rating is also not the same as a recommended long-distance towing capability; trailer weight, tongue weight, cargo, passengers, road speed, temperature and terrain can all affect the practical experience.
The payload figure includes people and cargo, not just items placed in the bed. Owners should check the final door-jamb label and owner’s manual before hauling or towing, because certification and production changes can alter the published limits.
A deliberately barebones cabin
The Slate is intentionally low-content. Instead of using a conventional large infotainment touchscreen and multiple factory trim levels, the launch materials emphasize tactile controls and owner-selected equipment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reported standard or launch-focused features include:
- Crank windows
- Physical HVAC controls
- Steel wheels
- A phone mount
- USB power
- Optional audio or tablet equipment
This approach can reduce cost, simplify the cabin and make the vehicle less dependent on expensive integrated electronics. It also shifts responsibility to the owner. Navigation, music, hands-free calling and other functions may depend more heavily on a personal phone or tablet than on a built-in system.
A universal truck phone mount can be a practical accessory for that bring-your-own-device setup, but fit, visibility, charging access and mounting location should be checked on the production vehicle. A generic mount should not be assumed to be an official Slate accessory or guaranteed to fit every final dashboard design.
The minimalist interior will appeal to buyers who prefer physical controls and easy-to-understand equipment. It may frustrate people who expect a modern EV to include a large display, integrated navigation, premium audio and a long list of standard driver conveniences.
Safety equipment is promised, not yet proven by a public rating
Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP crash rating. That is a development goal, not a completed government test result. The current language should not be converted into a claim that the production pickup already has a five-star safety rating.
Slate lists or describes the following safety and driver-assistance equipment:
- Traction control
- Electronic stability control
- Forward-collision warning
- Automatic emergency braking
- Airbags
- Backup camera
- Pedestrian identification
- Automatic high beams
- Remote keyless entry
Final equipment, system performance and crash-test results should be verified when the production vehicle is certified. Buyers should also distinguish between the presence of a safety feature and the quality of its calibration in real-world driving.

Repairability and warranty plans
Slate is positioning the vehicle as a repairable, modular product. The company says most repairs can be performed using Slate U guidance and expects access to more than 3,000 RepairPal shops, including more than 100 service centers capable of high-voltage EV work.
Slate also says the battery and powertrain will carry a 10-year/110,000-mile warranty. These are company-stated plans. Prospective buyers should confirm the final warranty document, exclusions, transferability, roadside assistance, battery-capacity coverage and actual service availability in their region before treating them as established ownership benefits.
The repairability idea could be one of the Slate’s strongest differentiators. A simpler vehicle with replaceable or upgradeable components may be easier to keep on the road than a highly integrated vehicle. However, a modular design does not automatically guarantee inexpensive repairs. Parts pricing, software access, diagnostic requirements, collision repair procedures and technician availability will determine the real cost.
Where the vehicle will be made
Slate says its vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan and assembled in Indiana. The company’s June 2026 announcement identifies a reindustrialized factory in Warsaw, Indiana, with an intended investment of nearly $400 million and more than 2,000 jobs.
Those statements describe the company’s manufacturing plans and projections, not independently verified production results. The more precise description for now is that Slate plans to assemble the vehicle in the United States. Until mass production begins, it is premature to describe the pickup as a proven, volume-produced U.S.-made vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Slate’s Marketplace is central to its business model. Company materials mention accessories such as roof racks, stereos, seat covers, light covers, wheel-related equipment, phone and tablet hardware, wrap kits and conversion kits.
The reported accessory count is changing. An earlier FAQ referred to nearly four dozen accessories at the time of the FAQ crawl, while the June 2026 announcement referred to more than 200 accessories planned or available through the Marketplace. Those figures likely reflect different dates and stages of catalog development, so neither should be treated as a permanent inventory count.
Slate says wraps start at around $500 and that professional installation is targeted at less than $500. Pricing, availability and installation costs can change before customer deliveries.
For utility use, a truck bed cargo organizer may be useful, but generic pickup accessories should not be assumed to fit the Slate. The bed dimensions, mounting points and final accessory interfaces need to be confirmed, and some products may require Slate-specific hardware or adapters.

The base price may look attractive, but a buyer who adds five-seat capability, upgraded wheels, audio equipment, storage, a wrap and charging hardware could end up well above the advertised starting figure. The correct comparison is therefore not simply the base Slate against another truck’s base MSRP; it is the cost of the configuration the buyer actually needs.

Who should consider the Slate?
The Slate makes the most sense for a buyer who:
- Needs a small pickup rather than a full-size truck
- Can charge at home or has reliable access to public charging
- Is comfortable with a projected rather than proven specification set
- Values simple physical controls over a large integrated infotainment system
- Likes the idea of adding equipment over time
- Has light towing and hauling needs
- Can wait until the expected Q4 2026 delivery period
It is a less obvious choice for someone who needs a vehicle immediately, regularly tows heavy trailers, expects a confirmed EPA range today, requires a large rear seat from day one, or wants a traditional dealership and service experience that has already been demonstrated at scale.
What buyers should verify before placing a preorder
- Confirm the real transaction price. Start with $24,950, add the $1,450 destination charge, then include taxes, registration, documentation fees, options and conversion equipment.
- Do not assume the federal credit applies. Check the IRS transition rules only if a binding contract and payment were completed by September 30, 2025. A new 2026 preorder is not automatically eligible.
- Check local incentives separately. State and local programs can have income limits, funding caps, vehicle-price limits and expiration dates.
- Ask for final range certification. The current 205-mile number is projected, not an official EPA rating.
- Review final towing and payload labels. The current 2,000-pound tow and 1,550-pound payload figures remain subject to production certification.
- Plan home charging. Determine whether Level 1 is sufficient or whether the home needs a 240-volt Level 2 installation.
- Check service coverage where you live. Slate’s RepairPal and high-voltage service figures are company plans, so regional availability matters.
- Price the desired configuration. A five-seat conversion or utility-focused build may cost substantially more than the Blank Slate.
- Read the preorder terms. Confirm deposit treatment, cancellation rights, delivery estimates and the process for finalizing options.
The bottom line on Slate’s $20,000 electric pickup
Slate Auto’s original concept remains unusual: a simple, U.S.-assembled electric pickup that can evolve into a five-seat SUV or other utility vehicle. The company has also improved its published targets, raising projected range from 150 to 205 miles and increasing projected towing capacity from 1,000 to 2,000 pounds.
But the price story has changed. As of August 11, 2026, the Blank Slate starts at $24,950, and the stated destination charge raises the minimum advertised vehicle price to $26,400 before taxes, fees and options. The former federal incentives that supported the under-$20,000 headline generally do not apply to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.
The Slate could still be compelling for buyers who want a small, simple, customizable EV and are willing to accept the uncertainty of a preproduction vehicle. It should not yet be described as a tested, EPA-rated, proven or immediately available $20,000 electric truck.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Slate Auto’s electric pickup really a $20,000 vehicle?
No. Slate’s current advertised starting price for the two-seat Blank Slate is $24,950. Adding the $1,450 destination charge brings the minimum advertised vehicle-plus-destination price to $26,400 before taxes, title, registration, documentation fees, options and local incentives. The original under-$20,000 figure depended on federal incentives.
Can a 2026 Slate buyer claim the former federal EV tax credit?
A normal buyer placing a new preorder in 2026 should not assume eligibility. The IRS says the relevant clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Transitional eligibility may apply to a buyer who entered a binding written contract and made a payment by that deadline, subject to the applicable rules.
Is the Slate’s 205-mile range EPA-rated?
No. Slate currently describes 205 miles as a projected estimate based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle. The vehicle remains in preproduction, and the figure should not be treated as an official EPA-estimated range.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
When will Slate Auto deliver the pickup?
Slate says preorders are open and first deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company also says delivery windows are filling, but the vehicle remains preproduction and the schedule is not the same as immediate availability.
Is the Slate already proven to have a five-star safety rating?
No. Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP rating. That is a target, not a published production crash-test result.
The Bottom Line
Slate’s $20,000 electric-pickup headline is now outdated. The current Blank Slate starts at $24,950, or $26,400 with destination, while its 205-mile range, 2,000-pound tow rating and Q4 2026 delivery timing remain projections or company targets for a preproduction vehicle. Its modular, repair-focused design could still make it distinctive, but buyers should budget from the current price and wait for final EPA, safety and production data.
