It was the company’s first public demonstration in Tokyo, but not a passenger flight: the aircraft flew unmanned, and members of the public tried a simulated check-in and boarding process.
What SkyDrive demonstrated in Tokyo
SkyDrive set up a temporary take-off and landing site in the outdoor parking area of Tokyo Big Sight’s East Wing. The demonstration was organized with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Mitsubishi Estate and Kanematsu. SkyDrive described it as its first demo flight in Tokyo and said the event would also help assess passenger-flow procedures for future urban air mobility operations. SkyDrive’s announcement specifies that the aircraft would not carry passengers.

A report by News.az described the flight as remotely operated, lasting about three and a half minutes and covering roughly 150 meters. Those figures are reported details, not a substitute for a published flight log. SkyDrive’s announcement identifies Tokyo Big Sight as the site; the available material does not establish the precise flight path or show that the aircraft crossed open Tokyo Bay.
Selected participants could experience parts of a proposed passenger journey, including facial-recognition check-in, security screening and boarding procedures. That is useful operational groundwork, but a simulated passenger process is different from flying passengers.

What the SD-05 is—and what “flying car” means here
The SD-05 is a battery-electric eVTOL aircraft designed for urban air mobility. “Flying car” is a catchy shorthand, not a description of a conventional car that can be driven on public roads. SkyDrive’s published specifications describe an aircraft with 12 electric motors and rotors, configured for one pilot and two passengers.
| Published SD-05 specification | SkyDrive’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Approximate dimensions, including rotors | 11.5 m long × 11.3 m wide × 3 m high |
| Seats | Three total: one pilot and two passengers |
| Propulsion | 12 electric motors and rotors; battery electric |
| Maximum takeoff weight | 1,400 kg |
| Maximum cruise speed | 100 km/h |
| Published range | 15 km; SkyDrive says battery upgrades could extend it to 30–40 km |
These are manufacturer-published figures, not proof of the range or speed achieved during the Tokyo demonstration. SkyDrive’s SD-05 release for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo also says the company is pursuing certification with Japanese and U.S. civil aviation authorities.
What the flight proves—and what it does not
A public demonstration is a meaningful engineering and coordination milestone. It shows an aircraft performing a controlled take-off and landing in a public event setting, and it brings a developer, government and commercial partners together to consider how a future passenger operation might work. It does not show that the aircraft is certified for passenger service or ready for routine transport.

- It does show: a public SD-05 flight demonstration and early work on the passenger terminal experience.
- It does not show: passengers flying, commercial-route capability, all-weather reliability, high-frequency operations, or the economics of a working service.
- It does not establish: autonomous passenger operation. News.az reported that the Tokyo aircraft was remotely operated and unmanned; SkyDrive’s described cabin configuration includes a pilot.
The reported 150-meter flight is tiny beside a practical airport transfer or cross-harbor trip. It is evidence of incremental progress, not proof that an eVTOL can reliably serve daily commuters. Nor does the presence of 12 rotors alone establish what happens after a motor or battery fault; that requires aircraft-specific safety evidence and regulatory approval.
Why Tokyo is a demanding test case
Tokyo has reasons to explore urban air mobility: dense development, road congestion, major airport and rail connections, and waterfront corridors that might support short trips. But the same environment raises difficult questions about where aircraft can land, how they fit into airspace, and how noise and safety concerns will be handled near residents.
SkyDrive and Joby Aviation were selected for a Tokyo Metropolitan Government implementation project examining use cases, possible take-off and landing sites, public acceptance and future deployment. The project description sets out demonstrations in fiscal 2026, pre-commercial social implementation in fiscal 2027, and consideration of urban commercialization from fiscal 2028 onward. These are project stages, not evidence that a citywide service is already approved. See SkyDrive’s description of the Tokyo project.

What must happen before an air taxi can carry passengers
A brief empty flight is only one piece of a passenger service. Certification of an aircraft design, permission to operate it on particular routes, pilot requirements and permission to use landing sites are distinct issues. A company’s pursuit of certification does not mean those approvals have been granted.

- Aircraft certification: regulators must assess the design and its safety case; the Tokyo demonstration alone does not establish certification.
- Operating approvals and pilots: operators need authorization for their intended service, and the SD-05’s published configuration reserves one of three seats for a pilot.
- Vertiports and ground systems: landing sites need suitable passenger access, charging or turnaround arrangements, maintenance support, fire response and emergency procedures.
- Weather and reliability: operators need clear limits for wind and other conditions, battery reserves, diversions and aircraft faults. News.az reported that a January 2026 demonstration at SkyDrive’s Yamaguchi test site was canceled because wind did not meet government safety standards. That reported cancellation illustrates weather’s potential to interrupt operations, but does not define the SD-05’s full operating envelope.
- Community acceptance: noise, land use, emergency access and the effects of repeated flights need to be addressed, not just the experience of a single demonstration.
Tokyo’s event also makes clear that an air taxi is a transport system, not just an aircraft. Passengers need a practical way to reach a vertiport, pass any required screening, board safely and connect to rail, taxis or other ground transport at the other end.
What an early service might look like
If the aircraft and operating system clear the necessary hurdles, an early service is more likely to use predefined short routes between selected sites than to offer door-to-door trips or personal ownership. Airport links, waterfront crossings and other corridors where a direct flight saves time are plausible use cases, but the Tokyo demonstration did not establish a commercial route.

The SD-05’s published 15-kilometer range points toward short hops; the company says battery upgrades could raise that figure to 30–40 kilometers. Actual usable routes would also depend on reserves, weather, vertiport availability and regulatory conditions, none of which are settled by the headline range number.
Economics are another open question. With one pilot and two passenger seats, each flight has little passenger capacity, so a service would need enough demand and aircraft utilization to support pilots, maintenance, charging and landing infrastructure. News.az attributed to SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa a future fare estimate of around twice a taxi fare, or possibly less, after 2030, and a claim that suitable trips could be four to five times faster than ground transport. Those are forward-looking, route-dependent projections—not current fares or demonstrated operating costs.

| Option | Where it may have an advantage | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Rail | Potentially direct short links where a suitable flight route avoids a long ground detour. | Rail’s established networks and capacity for moving many passengers. |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | Potentially faster travel on a congested route with a direct air connection. | Door-to-door flexibility without a dedicated aviation terminal. |
| Helicopter | Battery-electric propulsion has no direct exhaust emissions in flight. | Helicopters’ established operating history and infrastructure; the eVTOL still needs its own certification, landing sites and operating system. |
These are broad differences, not a claim that an eVTOL is quieter, cheaper or more convenient in every situation. A flight can save time only if access to both landing sites, screening, waiting and onward travel do not erase the advantage.

Is 2028 a real launch date?
SkyDrive’s target is commercial service around 2028, subject to certification and operational development. The Tokyo project roadmap also places potential urban commercialization from fiscal 2028 onward. Neither statement guarantees a launch on that date: certification, production readiness, operating permissions, vertiports, maintenance and charging systems, insurance, local approvals and public acceptance all remain material dependencies. The current evidence supports describing 2028 as a company and project target, not a confirmed start of passenger service.
“First” also needs a narrow definition. This was SkyDrive’s first public demo flight in Tokyo, not its first aircraft flight, Japan’s first eVTOL flight or the world’s first flying-car flight. SkyDrive says it conducted a public crewed eVTOL test flight in Japan in 2020, and the SD-05 was demonstrated at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.
