Toyota Group companies helped fund SkyDrive’s growth, but the company’s history does not say Toyota Motor Corporation makes or sells the aircraft. SkyDrive’s latest announcements target commercialization in 2028; the SD-05 is still in development, and no public passenger service is established.
What does “Toyota-based” mean?
SkyDrive is the aircraft developer. Its company history says financial contributions from 15 Toyota Group companies helped the team grow. That describes financial backing from companies in the group; it does not establish that Toyota Motor Corporation owns SkyDrive or manufactures, markets, or sells the SD-05 as a Toyota vehicle. SkyDrive’s company history does not identify the aircraft as a Toyota product.
What is the SkyDrive SD-05?
In a September 26, 2022 design announcement, SkyDrive described the SD-05 as a compact, electric-powered aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL). It is intended for short-hop air mobility, including potential air-taxi and regional routes—not everyday road driving. The described layout has two seats: one for a pilot, who operates the aircraft, and one for a passenger. SkyDrive said a computer-controlled flight system would assist stability.
The same announcement gave an approximately 10 km maximum range and a 100 km/h cruise speed. Those were design figures published at that time, not guaranteed production specifications: SkyDrive explicitly said the design and specifications could change as development continued. Its later 100 km/h test milestone does not by itself establish the final cruise speed or range.

SkyDrive design director Takumi Yamamoto called the design “another big step towards the realization of flying cars and sky roads.” He also described its concept as “giving wings to daily travel.” These are the company’s aspirations for the aircraft, not evidence that it is ready for routine passenger travel or that its safety has been independently established. SkyDrive’s September 2022 SD-05 announcement also discussed an earlier aspiration to begin an Osaka Bay air-taxi service during Expo 2025; that was a past plan, not the current target.
How far along is the SD-05?
SkyDrive’s announcements show flight testing and public demonstrations, alongside a stated goal of progressing toward type certification. They do not establish that the SD-05 is certified or operating a passenger service.

Flight-test milestones
On June 24, 2026, SkyDrive said the SD-05 reached 100 km/h in high-speed flight tests. The company said the tests assessed stability, controllability, maneuverability, propulsion and flight-control systems, and onboard avionics. It described the data as supporting progress toward type certification and its planned 2028 commercialization. This is a company-reported development milestone, not a certification announcement. On July 2, 2026, SkyDrive reported that the SD-05 had completed 300 flights without incident across a period from November 2024 through June 2026. Tokyo demonstrations
SkyDrive said its first public Tokyo demonstration flights took place at Tokyo Big Sight from February 24 to 28, 2026. Mitsubishi Estate and Kanematsu collaborated on the flights, which were part of a Tokyo Metropolitan Government project exploring eVTOL service business models. SkyDrive’s 2026 announcements point to 2028 as its commercialization target, later than the company’s earlier Expo 2025-era Osaka Bay aspiration. The newer date is a stated plan, not a confirmed launch or proof that a service will be available to passengers then.

Can you buy or ride in the SkyDrive flying car?
The SD-05 is not a road car, and the announcements cited here do not offer it for consumer purchase or establish a public passenger service. SkyDrive’s demonstrations and prospective aircraft agreements are not the same as a bookable air taxi. No ticket price, consumer purchase terms, or confirmed passenger launch date is established in these announcements.
