In Autocar India’s account, Jay Patil sets out from Škoda’s Chakan plant near Pune, drives through India and Nepal, crosses into Tibet/China, and faces a route shaped by city traffic, mountain roads, border paperwork and long stretches far from urban centres.
Where does the first leg go?
Patil’s trip begins at Škoda India’s Chakan plant near Pune and is planned as a journey of nearly 20,000 kilometres across thirteen countries and four major mountain ranges. The feature’s first installment covers the drive through India and Nepal, then the long China segment to the China-Kyrgyzstan border. It is a progress report on the expedition, not a completed Pune-to-Prague journey.
In India, the route runs from Pune through Vadodara, Udaipur, Jaipur, Agra, Lucknow and Gorakhpur to Raxaul. From there it continues through Nepal, with stops including Birgunj, Chitwan National Park, Lumbini, Pokhara and Kathmandu, before reaching the Sino-Nepal border near Rasuwa Bridge. On the China side, the account includes Everest Base Camp, Lhasa, Golmud and Turpan before the Kyrgyzstan frontier.
The route is a record of this expedition rather than a ready-made itinerary: border formalities, road access and travel conditions can change, and the feature is not current border guidance.

How did the road conditions change across the route?
India: cities, traffic and highway stretches
The account moves between congested urban driving and more relaxed highway cruising. Patil describes Mumbai traffic and narrow lanes in Agra as demanding, while Gujarat highways offered easier progress. The route also made room for sightseeing: the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and Jaipur’s Amer Fort, Jal Mahal and Hawa Mahal. Local food stops and a send-off convoy of Škoda owners added to the journey’s pace and character.
Nepal: mountain roads and delays
In Nepal, the route brought a change from city and highway driving to mountain roads vulnerable to landslides. A landslide clearance delayed the journey toward Pokhara by two hours, according to Patil. The approach toward Rasuwa Bridge was muddy. Those are the conditions encountered on this trip, not a prediction of typical delays or current road access.

China: altitude, distance and off-road sections
The China leg combined long distances with high-altitude passes and off-road stretches. Patil reports two days of off-roading on the way toward Golmud, with more than 13 hours of driving at an average speed of 18 km/h. The Everest Base Camp portion also had a final segment completed by a one-hour bus ride, as described in the feature. These details convey the expedition’s demands; they should not be treated as a general access guide.
What fuel economy did the Kylaq return?
Patil reports the following fuel use and driving figures for the expedition’s segments. They are trip-specific observations, affected by each route’s traffic, terrain and pace—not official economy ratings or a controlled comparison.

The substantially different averages reflect different route segments and conditions. They should not be used as a prediction of what another Kylaq will achieve on a similar distance or in everyday driving.
What role did the Kylaq play?
The expedition vehicle is the Škoda Kylaq, which Autocar India described as the brand’s smallest SUV at the time of the feature. Patil says the turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic, including paddle-shift controls, were useful on parts of the route. That is the driver’s account, not the result of a controlled vehicle test or a comparison with another SUV.

Patil also says the Kylaq’s 446-litre boot was packed for 70 days on the road. Škoda’s official Kylaq interior page lists a 25.6 cm infotainment display, a 20.32 cm digital cockpit and smartgrip bottle holders, alongside a two-spoke multifunction steering wheel. The page describes an electric sunroof on selected variants; availability and equipment depend on market and trim, so check the specification for the particular car. The manufacturer’s “home away from home” phrasing is product positioning, not an independent assessment of comfort over this expedition.
