Which CX-90 powertrain makes sense?
Mazda offered three distinct choices for 2024. The launch announcement gives the following output figures; they are not interchangeable across trims.
- 3.3 Turbo: The standard mild-hybrid inline-six makes 280 hp and 332 lb-ft. Mazda’s 2023 announcement lists EPA estimates of 24/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined.
- 3.3 Turbo S: The higher-output inline-six makes up to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft when using recommended premium fuel. Mazda lists EPA estimates of 23/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined.
- 2.5 PHEV: The plug-in hybrid system makes 323 hp and 369 lb-ft and has a 17.8-kWh battery. Mazda said it could operate on electric power in a variety of scenarios, but its launch announcement said EPA range and fuel-economy figures would be provided closer to launch. Do not treat those unprovided launch figures as established here.
For the MDX, Acura’s 2023 materials give the base FWD EPA estimate as 19/26/22 mpg. The comparison sources describe a 3.5-liter V6 for non-Type-S models and a more powerful Type S, with FWD and SH-AWD options across the lineup. Ratings and equipment depend on package, so compare the relevant trim rather than using the base MDX figure for every version.
What the road test can—and cannot—tell you
AutoTrader.ca’s comparison test found the tested MDX more comfortable over road imperfections and said some of its cabin materials felt more premium. It found the tested CX-90’s inline-six more urgent. These are impressions from specific Canadian-market vehicles, not universal measurements or guarantees about every U.S. trim.

The same test reported 451 L of cargo volume for the CX-90 and 462 L for the MDX with all seats up. It found the Mazda had somewhat more space with the rear seats folded. In its Canadian context, AutoTrader.ca also reported official combined ratings of 9.5 L/100 km for the CX-90 and 11.2 L/100 km for the MDX, and measured 9.5 and 11.5 L/100 km respectively during that test. Canadian ratings and one road test are not U.S. EPA figures or predictions of what every driver will get.
Both cabins have controls worth trying before you buy. AutoTrader.ca described Mazda’s rotary-controller approach and reported pairing trouble with one editor’s Samsung phone during its test; it criticized the MDX touchpad and control layout. Pair your own phone and try the navigation, climate controls, and seat access in each vehicle.

Use original prices as context, not as a used-car verdict
Mazda announced a $37,845 starting MSRP for the 2024 CX-90 in 2023. Acura listed $50,150 for the base 2024 MDX with FWD, before destination. Both figures are original U.S. MSRPs, not current used-car prices or 2026 transaction values. A price gap at launch does not establish which used vehicle is the better buy today.
When shopping for a used example, compare listings with similar trim, mileage, condition, and equipment. Review maintenance records and warranty status, check recall information by VIN, and arrange a pre-purchase inspection. A lower listing price may reflect differences that matter more than the model name.

How to choose between them
- Lean toward the CX-90 if standard AWD, a choice of mild-hybrid six-cylinder or plug-in-hybrid powertrains, the standard Turbo’s EPA estimate, or Mazda’s advertised maximum towing capacity suit your needs.
- Lean toward the MDX if you prefer the tested MDX’s ride comfort and cabin finish, or want the choice of FWD and SH-AWD.
- Test both in the configuration you would actually buy. Check third-row access with the people who will use it, load your usual cargo, pair your phone, and drive the same route if possible.
- Verify the individual vehicle. Confirm its trim, drivetrain, towing equipment and rating, service history, warranty status, and VIN-specific recall information before making an offer.
