But the title remained undecided: NHRA’s standings snapshot after event 17 of 20 showed three events still to run.
How Langdon won the Rockingham final
At the NHRA Nationals at The Rock, Langdon edged Kalitta on a holeshot: his quicker reaction at the start made the difference despite Kalitta posting the faster elapsed time. NHRA recorded Langdon’s reaction time at .024 seconds. He ran 3.739 seconds at 342.73 mph; Kalitta ran 3.722 seconds at 330.40 mph. Langdon called for a near-perfect effort. “We knew for the final round we had to make a picture-perfect run,” he said. He added: “We’re out here to win races and you have to be perfect in order to do things like this.” NHRA attributed both comments to Langdon after the event.
What the Rockingham result did to the points race
NHRA’s official standings, labeled “Following event 17 of 20” and “As of Rockingham, NC,” list Langdon first with 2,335 points and Kalitta second with 2,310. Tony Stewart sits third at 2,180, 155 points behind Langdon. The margin over Kalitta is 25 points—not a clinched championship. NHRA’s 2026 standings.

Those totals and gaps describe NHRA’s post-Rockingham snapshot, not a permanent or final result. Three of the 20 events remained at that point, leaving Kalitta and Stewart with a mathematical opportunity to close the gap.
How Langdon took the lead
The points race had shifted sharply over the Countdown. Before U.S. Nationals eliminations, Kalitta led Langdon by 68 points. NHRA reported that Kalitta secured the regular-season championship during the event; that honor is separate from the overall 2026 championship still being contested. NHRA’s U.S. Nationals notes.

Langdon then won the U.S. Nationals Top Fuel final against Tony Stewart, running 3.804 seconds at 333.99 mph to Stewart’s 3.904 at 315.27 mph. NHRA’s U.S. Nationals results.
At the September 21 Great Lakes Nationals, Langdon defeated Spencer Massey in the final, 3.664 seconds at 346.15 mph to Massey’s 3.764 at 327.75 mph, and moved back into the points lead. NHRA also reported that Langdon reached 346.95 mph in a semifinal pass, calling it the fastest pass in NHRA history at the time of its September 21, 2026 release; that is a dated record claim, not a guarantee it remains the record. A three-race streak, with the title still ahead
NHRA described Rockingham as Langdon’s third consecutive win, his seventh victory of the 2026 season and his 29th career win. The streak included his U.S. Nationals victory and wins at the first two Countdown events, according to NHRA’s event coverage. Rockingham report; U.S. Nationals results; Great Lakes report.
