Its cabin is designed to move relative to the wheels to manage the vehicle’s balance. But SHANE remains a concept: the available sources do not establish a production vehicle, independent road or safety tests, regulatory approval, or consumer availability.
How SHANE is supposed to work
Inventist’s concept places a passenger compartment between two large, parallel wheels. Rather than relying on a conventional four-wheel layout, the design aims to manage the vehicle’s center of gravity by shifting the cabin fore and aft relative to the wheels. New Atlas described that movement as intended to help keep the cabin level during acceleration and braking. These are design intentions, not results demonstrated in independent testing. Balance and steering
Inventist says the two wheels would use differential speed control for turning: the wheels can rotate at different speeds to maneuver the vehicle, rather than using a conventional steering linkage. The company also describes a cabin-positioning system that shifts the compartment in relation to the wheels to counter the effects of acceleration and braking. The sources describe the proposed mechanisms but do not document validated handling, especially at low speeds or in emergency maneuvers. (Inventist announcement; New Atlas)
Chen told IEEE Spectrum that the concept differs from the inverted-pendulum balance used by his self-balancing rideables. He described SHANE as having its center of gravity below the wheel centers, which he said makes it stable when stationary or traveling at a constant speed. Regenerative shocks
Inventist says SHANE would use regenerative shock absorbers within the wheels to capture energy as the suspension compresses and rebounds, then send that energy to the battery. The available material does not provide measured energy recovery or evidence of a resulting efficiency gain. (Inventist announcement)
What is known—and what is not—about SHANE
Inventist introduced SHANE on October 17, 2023, and New Atlas reported the concept two days later. The launch material and subsequent coverage show an announced design, not a verified production program. Inventist’s official site continues to present SHANE as an invention and invites inquiries from people interested in licensing it or taking part in making it. The sources do not confirm that a production partner was secured or that a prototype, certification, production schedule, or retail vehicle has since emerged. IEEE Spectrum reported in November 2023 that Chen was in talks with several companies and noted the testing and regulatory work a new car would require, including evaluation of safety and other design elements. That report does not establish that any discussions led to a partner or that the necessary development and approval steps have taken place. (IEEE Spectrum)

Until the design is tested and developed further, readers cannot use the available information to judge how it would handle, protect occupants, compare in efficiency, or fit into everyday driving. How SHANE relates to Chen’s hoverboards
Inventist introduced the Hovertrax II in the same October 2023 announcement. It is a separate self-balancing rideable, not a component of SHANE and not evidence that the car concept has been built or validated. Chen’s earlier work helps explain the inventor behind the project, but the engineering and safety questions for a passenger car are different. (Inventist announcement)
