By the numbers, Sebastian Vettel achieved far more at Red Bull than Ferrari: Formula 1’s comparison records 38 wins and four championships for his Red Bull years, against 14 wins and no championships for Ferrari from 2015 through 2019. The comparison is not a complete account of his Ferrari tenure, however: Vettel also raced for the team in 2020.
How Vettel’s Red Bull and Ferrari records compare
Formula 1 published a direct comparison in January 2020, covering Vettel’s Red Bull seasons from 2009 to 2014 and his Ferrari seasons from 2015 to 2019. Those windows are unequal in length, so the win rates help put the totals in context.
| Measure | Red Bull, 2009–2014 | Ferrari, 2015–2019 |
|---|---|---|
| Race wins | 38 | 14 |
| World championships | 4 | 0 |
| Pole positions | 44 | 12 |
| Win rate | 34% | 14% |
These are the figures in Formula 1’s January 2020 comparison. Its Ferrari column stops at 2019; it should not be read as Vettel’s complete Ferrari record.
Why the Red Bull years produced the stronger results
A championship-winning peak
Vettel’s Red Bull period included his four consecutive drivers’ championships, from 2010 through 2013. Formula 1’s account of the team’s history says Red Bull secured both titles in 2010, describes Vettel and the RB7 as nearly untouchable in 2011, and notes the team’s fourth consecutive constructors’ championship in 2013. The results were concentrated in a highly successful run rather than spread evenly across all six seasons.

The 2014 season was a clear downturn
Red Bull’s 2014 season was less dominant. The team recovered from a difficult pre-season but finished second in the constructors’ standings. Daniel Ricciardo won three races and outperformed Vettel, who left for Ferrari after the season. That final Red Bull year is a reminder that the record reflects a period with both exceptional peaks and a difficult closing chapter.
Ferrari had meaningful success, but no title
Vettel helped Ferrari challenge
Ferrari was a serious rival to Mercedes in 2015, and the team’s history credits Vettel with all three of its wins that season. In 2018, Vettel supplied five of Ferrari’s victories. Ferrari had, for much of that year, what its own history describes as the fastest package, but costly mistakes hampered its campaign. The season shows why “no championships” does not mean Vettel or Ferrari were uncompetitive throughout the comparison window.

Leclerc’s arrival changed the comparison
In 2019, Vettel’s new teammate Charles Leclerc outscored him and won twice, compared with Vettel’s one victory. Leclerc’s results add important context to the Ferrari period, but a teammate comparison alone does not explain the wider difference between Vettel’s Red Bull and Ferrari totals.
What the figures do—and do not—show
The records establish the outcomes: more wins, poles, and championships, plus a higher win rate, during Vettel’s Red Bull years than in Ferrari’s 2015–2019 comparison period. They do not isolate why. Car performance, reliability, strategy, teammates, and driver execution all affect a season’s results; these aggregate statistics cannot assign a precise share of the difference to any one factor.

Vettel described his Ferrari move as having a distinct purpose: “I had a clear mission to bring Ferrari back to the top,” he told Formula 1 in January 2020. The mission did not culminate in a championship during the five-season comparison window, even though Ferrari won races and challenged for the title in parts of it.

Vettel raced for Ferrari for one more season after the 2015–2019 window used in Formula 1’s comparison. In 2020, Ferrari recorded no wins, three podiums, and sixth place in the constructors’ standings; Vettel’s contract was not renewed for 2021. Those results complete the team’s Ferrari-era picture, but they are not included in the comparison table above.
