San Marino is the country commonly identified with more than one registered automobile per resident. Its official June 2025 statistics list 35,027 four-wheel automobiles and a resident population of 34,097—about 1,027 automobiles per 1,000 residents.
That does not mean every person in San Marino owns a car. The figure compares vehicle registrations with population, and San Marino’s official category includes four-wheel autoveicoli, a broader classification than internationally comparable passenger cars.

| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Resident population | 34,097 |
| Four-wheel automobiles | 35,027 |
| Automobiles above the population count | 930 |
| Automobiles per resident | Approximately 1.027 |
| Automobiles per 1,000 residents | Approximately 1,027 |
The calculation is simple:
35,027 registered four-wheel automobiles ÷ 34,097 residents = 1.027 automobiles per resident
In other words, San Marino’s registered four-wheel automobile count exceeded its resident population by 930 in June 2025.
Why “more than one car per person” needs a qualification
The popular version of this fact says that San Marino averages more than one car per person. The more precise wording is more than one registered four-wheel automobile per resident.

San Marino has also exceeded the one-car-per-person threshold in an older comparable passenger-car series: a UNECE infocard reported 1,011 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2004. However, that historical figure should not be silently combined with the newer national total, because the categories and years are different.
It does not mean every resident owns a car
A registration-to-population ratio is not a household-ownership survey. A country can have more registered vehicles than residents without every individual owning one.
The total may include:
- Cars and other four-wheel vehicles registered to businesses;
- Multiple vehicles owned by the same resident or company;
- Vehicles held for commercial activity or resale;
- Vehicles that are later transferred, exported, or used outside San Marino; and
- Vehicles that remain on the registration system even though they are not being driven regularly.
San Marino’s statistical bulletin describes registration as entry in the vehicle-registration register and as the technical and legal certification of a vehicle. That makes the statistic a measure of registered vehicles relative to the resident population, not a literal count of cars physically present in the country or a claim about personal ownership.

The denominator also matters. San Marino has a population of only around 34,000 people. In a country this small, a relatively modest number of business, collector, commercial, or otherwise non-typical registrations can produce a very high per-capita result.

Motorcycles and mopeds are not included in the headline number
The 35,027 figure covers four-wheel automobiles in San Marino’s table. The same table separately lists 8,873 motorcycles and 2,879 mopeds.
Those two-wheel vehicles should not be added when answering the car-per-person question. Adding them would produce a higher motor-vehicle-to-population ratio, but it would answer a different question: how many registered vehicles of several types exist per resident.
Likewise, the headline should not be expanded to include trucks, buses, trailers, agricultural machinery, or other categories unless the subject is explicitly changed from automobiles to all registered vehicles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

San Marino is the defensible standard answer, but the absolute claim that it is the only nation in the world requires caution.

A worldwide ranking can change depending on:
- Whether “car” means passenger cars only or all four-wheel automobiles;
- Which year’s registrations and population are used;
- Whether microstates and territories are included;
- Whether business, collector, resale, and export-related registrations are counted; and
- Whether every country reports vehicles using the same definition.
For context, the UNECE’s displayed comparable passenger-car dataset for 2024 lists rates below one passenger car per resident for several high-motorization locations: Monaco at 909 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, Liechtenstein at 760, Luxembourg at 674, Cyprus at 664, and Italy at 701. San Marino does not appear in that displayed country table, so the dataset does not establish a complete worldwide ranking.
The strongest current conclusion is therefore:
San Marino has official national figures showing more than one registered four-wheel automobile per resident, and it is commonly recognized as the country associated with this distinction.
That wording is more accurate than presenting an unqualified worldwide ranking based on mixed vehicle categories or incomplete country coverage.
Why San Marino is associated with cars
The registration statistic is not proof that automotive tourism caused San Marino’s high vehicle ratio. Still, cars and motorcycles are part of the country’s public tourism identity. San Marino’s tourism authority promotes motoring-related gatherings and events, including the return of the 1000 Miglia and a sports-car exhibition connected with The Space Race in 2026.

For enthusiasts, San Marino automotive events provide useful cultural context: the country’s connection with cars extends beyond a statistical curiosity. But these events should be treated as a separate tourism and automotive-culture angle, not as an explanation demonstrated by the registration data.
How to state the fact accurately
Use one of these formulations:
- Best short answer: “San Marino is commonly identified as the country with more than one registered automobile per resident.”
- Most precise current version: “In June 2025, San Marino recorded 35,027 four-wheel automobiles and 34,097 residents—about 1,027 registered automobiles per 1,000 residents.”
- Passenger-car version: “San Marino has also exceeded one passenger car per resident in a historical UNECE comparable series, which reported 1,011 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2004.”
Avoid saying “every person owns a car,” “there is one car physically present for every resident,” or “San Marino is unquestionably the only country in the world” without defining the vehicle category, date, and comparison coverage.

No. The cited 35,027 figure is the official four-wheel automobile category. Motorcycles and mopeds are listed separately.
Is San Marino definitely the only country with more than one car per resident?
It is the commonly accepted answer, but a definitive worldwide claim depends on the year, vehicle definition, treatment of microstates and territories, and completeness of the comparison dataset.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: San Marino is the country associated with having more than one car per person. The latest official figures found for June 2025 show 35,027 registered four-wheel automobiles and 34,097 residents—about 1.027 automobiles per resident. The statistic describes registrations, not literal ownership by every citizen, and San Marino’s four-wheel category should not automatically be treated as identical to passenger cars.
