About a year later, the company announced a production-intent redesign, including a streamlined body it said would be simpler to build. That redesign marked a development step—not the start of customer deliveries: in a May 2026 update, Samson Sky said it was still preparing production infrastructure.
When did the Switchblade fly, and how did the flight go?
Samson Sky says its Switchblade flight-test prototype made its official first flight on November 5, 2023, at Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington. The company says the aircraft departed runway 32R, flew a wide pattern, and the flight evaluated control authority, stability in all three axes, level flight, control balance and flap effectiveness. Samson Sky’s account of the first flight is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent flight-test report.
The distinction matters: this was a test vehicle, not a production aircraft entering service. A successful first flight is an important milestone, but it does not establish that a redesigned version has completed its own testing or that the published performance figures have been demonstrated in production form.
What changed in the production-intent redesign?
On November 4, 2024, Samson Sky announced an enhanced body design for its production vehicles. CEO and designer Sam Bousfield said the redesign carried elements that had worked well on the test vehicle into a streamlined design intended to be simpler to build. The company said the changes would improve performance and shorten the path to production; the available company statements do not quantify independently verified aerodynamic gains or time saved in manufacturing. Samson Sky’s November 2024 announcement, distributed by PR Newswire, quotes Bousfield: “The new design improves performance and shortens the pathway to production by transferring much of what worked well in the test vehicle that flew, into the new streamlined design.”

The wing update
In a September 5, 2024 company update, Samson Sky said it had enlarged the wing from 67 to 99 square feet and simplified the mechanism that wedges and holds the folding wing portion in position when extended. The company also said the body shape and propulsion system had undergone wind-tunnel work. These are dated company descriptions; later design iterations may differ, and the statements are not independent test results. Read Samson Sky’s production-phase update.
What is the Switchblade, and what does Samson Sky claim it can do?
Samson Sky describes the Switchblade as a two-seat, three-wheel vehicle that can be driven to an airport. There, its wings swing out and its tail extends for flight. The company says the transformation takes under three minutes; that is a manufacturer claim about the designed process, not a timed independent demonstration of a production vehicle.

What would buying and flying one involve?
Samson Sky describes the Switchblade as an experimental-category kit aircraft that requires the owner to build 51% of the aircraft, with support available through its Builder Assist Center. The company says a private pilot license is required to fly it. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions; the sources cited here do not independently establish the aircraft’s aircraft-specific regulatory status. Driving and road-registration requirements can vary by jurisdiction, and the company’s general description does not prove the vehicle is road-legal everywhere.

Has production started, and when might it?
As of its May 20, 2026 update, Samson Sky said it was talking to contractors for its first production facility and hiring for supply chain, regulatory documentation, assembly and related work. Its FAQ gives a target of having the Builder Assist assembly line ready in summer 2027, and says production-prototype testing was expected around the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027. These are company projections, not confirmed completion dates. Samson Sky’s homepage and FAQ describe the status and targets.

Other announced manufacturing steps do not by themselves establish production readiness. In a June 19, 2025 announcement, Samson Sky said its carbon-fiber process would cut the cost of producing carbon-fiber parts by half and enable production eight times faster than traditional carbon-fiber manufacturing. Those are company claims, not independently audited results. The company’s manufacturing announcement describes the claimed process.
In May 2025, Samson Sky also announced Beyond Motors as its primary electric-motor supplier for production. That announcement establishes a planned supplier relationship; it does not establish delivered motors, production validation or customer deliveries. Samson Sky’s supplier announcement provides the company’s account.

What the redesign does—and does not—tell prospective buyers
The redesign shows Samson Sky was adapting elements of its flying prototype for a production-intent vehicle. The announced wing-area change and simpler body and wing details point to design development, while the company’s later updates show it was still working toward a factory, assembly capability and production-prototype testing. They do not show that the production version has flown, that deliveries have begun, or that the advertised specifications and schedules have been independently confirmed.
