For a modern GT, the requirements depend on the exact car’s model year and market, its own owner’s manual and warranty booklet, any signed purchase or allocation documents, and the laws that apply where it is registered or imported. The practical starting point is the printed manual supplied with the car; Ford says its online manual can differ from that vehicle-specific copy.
First, know which rules apply to your car
“Ford GT” covers multiple generations, model years and markets. Ford’s operating and maintenance guidance is not the same thing as a contract term or a government import rule. Before following a specification or making a purchase decision, identify the car’s model year and market version and consult its own documentation.
| Kind of rule | Where to check | What it governs |
|---|---|---|
| Operating and maintenance guidance | The printed owner’s manual supplied with that vehicle | Break-in, maintenance, fluids, service and any track-use procedures |
| Warranty terms | The warranty booklet for the vehicle’s market and model year | Coverage conditions and responsibilities, including scheduled maintenance |
| Purchase, allocation or transfer terms | The signed application, purchase documents and later transfer paperwork | Any contractual conditions on ownership, resale or transfer |
| Government requirements | The relevant national and local authorities | Import eligibility, registration and permitted use |
Ford says its online manual may differ from the printed manual supplied with the car and advises owners to rely on the vehicle’s own manual for its instructions and specifications. If a general guide conflicts with that manual, use the car-specific document and confirm any uncertainty with Ford GT Concierge or a Certified Ford GT Service Dealership.
Complete the break-in before driving aggressively
The cited Ford GT owner’s manual directs owners not to drive aggressively for the first 1,000 km (600 mi). During that period, it advises avoiding full throttle, sustained high-speed or high-load driving, competition or race-track conditions, and launch control. It also cautions against high load at low engine speed and recommends varying road and engine speeds. These instructions belong to the cited manual variant; check the manual supplied with your particular car.

The same manual includes a specific note for a car going on track immediately after break-in: change the engine oil after break-in. That is a conditional instruction, not a substitute for the vehicle’s normal maintenance schedule.
Follow the car’s maintenance schedule and warranty terms
Ford says the owner’s manual contains the required scheduled maintenance. The owner is responsible for having it performed using materials that meet Ford engineering specifications. In the cited Ford warranty guidance, failure to perform specified maintenance can invalidate coverage for parts affected by the lapse; it does not state that every warranty claim is automatically void.

The 2019 U.S. Ford GT warranty guide sets the warranty start date as the day the new GT is delivered and asks owners to report delivery damage to the dealership within one week. Those are terms from that guide, not a universal rule for every model year or market. Check the warranty booklet supplied with the vehicle.

Track use requires the exact manual’s settings
Ford states in its owner-manual track guidance that the GT is “already set up from the factory for road and track use.” That does not make every track setting universal: Ford manuals differ by variant, and the instructions depend on the car, tires and conditions. Check the manual for the exact GT before an event and follow its directions for fluids, alignment and tire pressures.
Tire pressures and alignment
One U.S. manual variant specifies cold minimum pressures of 26 psi at the front and 27 psi at the rear for road-course use. That variant says to raise cold pressure to 38 psi if the track has high banking or the car will exceed 165 mph. Another manual version gives different camber settings. Do not combine these figures or treat them as universal specifications; verify the correct manual, tire, track conditions and vehicle placard. After the event, restore road tire pressures as directed by the vehicle’s placard or manual.

Additional durability maintenance in one manual variant
A separate manual variant gives extra maintenance instructions for road-course durability: change the axle lubricant and friction modifier after the first hour of high-speed operation and every 12 hours thereafter under those conditions. It also calls for a transmission-oil change after an event in which individual on-track sessions exceed 15 minutes. These are conditional track-use instructions from that manual, not the ordinary road-use schedule for every GT.

Do not assume that every Ford GT owner is barred from selling for two years. In a complaint filed on November 30, 2017, Ford alleged that the program documents for John Cena’s 2017 GT included a promise to retain ownership for at least 24 months after delivery and not resell during that period. Ford described the alleged conduct as “Mr. Cena’s improper and unlawful resale of a custom-made, model year 2017 Ford GT sports car, in violation of the Ford GT Application Program and contracts pertaining to same.” Those are Ford’s allegations in a complaint, not a judicial finding or proof of a restriction applying to all GTs.

For a particular car, inspect the signed allocation documents, order confirmation and any subsequent transfer paperwork. Contract terms can depend on the transaction; the cited complaint does not establish a universal restriction or determine what terms govern a later used-car sale.
Historical allocation figures are not current application terms
Ford’s 2018 announcement described an application-based allocation process for the then-new GT. Ford said it planned approximately 1,350 customer cars worldwide, reported demand exceeding supply seven-to-one, and said applications would reopen for one month beginning November 1, 2018. These are historical figures and dates from Ford’s announcement. They do not establish a current application window or current production or demand figures.
Check U.S. import eligibility before buying an overseas car
For a vehicle less than 25 years old that was not originally manufactured to comply with all applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and was not so certified, NHTSA says permanent import is generally prohibited unless the agency determines the vehicle eligible. The process can require an approved Registered Importer, or a person contracted with one, to bring the vehicle into conformity.
NHTSA says a vehicle at least 25 years old may be imported without regard to FMVSS compliance under the relevant entry process; the 25-year period runs from the vehicle’s manufacture. The separate show-or-display route limits use to 2,500 miles per year and has restrictions on which vehicles qualify. It is not a general workaround for ordinary ownership. Confirm the exact car’s age, original compliance, eligibility and import route with NHTSA and customs authorities before purchase.
