The headline’s 16% comparison uses the forecast’s ceiling: 43,500 is approximately 15.7% below 51,579, rounded to 16%. The entire October range implied a year-over-year decline of about 15.7% to 19.5%, depending on where deliveries landed. The low end, 41,500, would mean the larger decline.
How did the forecast change during 2025?
Rivian’s outlook shifted as the year progressed. The figures below are guidance ranges, not actual delivery totals.

The May explanation is Rivian’s stated rationale for lowering guidance; it does not establish that any one policy or demand factor caused the eventual annual result.
What did Rivian actually deliver in 2025?
Rivian later reported 42,247 deliveries and 42,284 vehicles produced for full-year 2025 in its SEC-filed annual report. The delivery count fell inside the October forecast range, but below its 43,500 upper bound. Compared with 51,579 deliveries in 2024, the 2025 actual was down approximately 18.1%.

Deliveries and production are separate measures: Rivian produced 37 more vehicles than it reported delivering during 2025. Neither number should be substituted for the other, and deliveries are not necessarily the same as orders or retail registrations.

Rivian’s quarterly delivery counts rose through the first three quarters of 2025, according to the contemporaneous TechCrunch report. These are quarterly figures, not the full-year total.

It is a rounded comparison between the top of Rivian’s October forecast and its 2024 delivery count. It is not the decline ultimately reported for 2025: the final delivery count was lower than the forecast ceiling, producing an approximately 18.1% year-over-year drop.
