The feature later expanded as Universal Hands-Free to qualifying marked roads across the U.S. and Canada. It is hands-free, not eyes-off: the driver must stay attentive and ready to take control.
When did Rivian launch hands-off highway driver assist?
On February 20, 2025, Scaringe said Rivian expected its hands-off highway system to arrive “in a few weeks.” Rivian announced the rollout of Enhanced Highway Assist for Gen 2 R1 vehicles on March 11, 2025. The February statement was a forecast; the March announcement marked the initial release. TechCrunch reported Scaringe’s February remarks, and Rivian announced the March launch.
How did the feature change after launch?
The March 2025 release was highway-focused. Rivian initially described Enhanced Highway Assist as covering 135,000 miles of highway in the United States and Canada. In December 2025, software version 2025.46 began rolling out Universal Hands-Free, which Rivian said expanded coverage to more than 3.5 million miles of roads in those countries where lane lines are clearly marked. That mileage is Rivian’s coverage figure, not a guarantee that the system can be used on every road. Rivian’s launch announcement and its Universal Hands-Free announcement describe the two stages.
Does hands-free mean the Rivian drives itself?
No. Universal Hands-Free is driver assistance that lets the driver remove their hands from the wheel under supported conditions; it does not let the driver stop watching the road. Rivian says drivers must remain attentive and ready to resume control. Calling it autonomous, self-driving or eyes-off would overstate what the feature does. Rivian’s Universal Hands-Free support page explains the feature and its limits.

It does not handle traffic lights or stop signs
Rivian’s current feature information says Universal Hands-Free does not stop or slow the vehicle for traffic lights or stop signs. The driver remains responsible for driving and responding to road conditions.
Where can Universal Hands-Free be used?
Rivian’s expanded coverage applies on qualifying roads in the U.S. and Canada where lane lines are clearly marked. Coverage is not the same as universal availability: road markings, operating conditions, vehicle compatibility and software can affect whether assistance is available. Rivian’s older Highway Assist guides describe limitations around road construction and rapidly changing driving conditions; they are not a substitute for the current Universal Hands-Free instructions. Check the Owner’s Guide for the specific vehicle and the in-vehicle prompts before relying on the feature. Rivian support and the Rivian Owner’s Guide library provide official guidance.

Which Rivian vehicles and software versions are eligible?
The initial Enhanced Highway Assist rollout was announced for Gen 2 R1 vehicles. The available information does not establish exact eligibility for every trim, VIN, market or software version. Confirm availability in your Rivian account and vehicle, and consult the Owner’s Guide for your model rather than assuming that all Rivians support the feature. Rivian’s current Autonomy+ page describes the company’s system and its hardware, but its sensor description should not be taken to mean every generation or trim has identical equipment. See Rivian’s current Autonomy+ information.
What does Rivian charge for Autonomy+?
As listed on Rivian’s Autonomy+ page on October 4, 2026, purchase options were $49.99 per month or $2,500 one time; the page also advertised a 60-day trial with new R1 and R2 deliveries. Prices, package terms and trial eligibility can change, so check Rivian’s page for current terms before purchase. These options do not change the need to verify feature eligibility for a particular vehicle. Rivian Autonomy+.

Are eyes-off or point-to-point driving available?
Scaringe’s February 2025 comments included a target for an eyes-off version in 2026, but that dated forecast is not evidence that eyes-off driving subsequently launched. Rivian’s later statements in 2026 discussed point-to-point driving as a further step; the company’s May 2026 AMA described its rollout to R2 and R1 Gen 2 vehicles as planned for later that year. A plan or target is not confirmation of broad availability. Check for a dated Rivian release before treating either capability as available. Rivian’s May 2026 AMA and Rivian’s newsroom are the relevant official updates.
