Rivian’s Also is a standalone micromobility startup backed by $105 million from Eclipse Ventures—but Rivian remains deeply involved. The company emerged from a Rivian internal program in March 2025, with Rivian contributing people and intellectual property and reporting a 49.8% stake. Its first major consumer product, the TM-B, is a premium Class 3 electric bike, while its broader plan extends to cargo, passenger, commercial, and autonomous-delivery vehicles.

Rivian did not simply launch an e-bike brand. It spun its stealth micromobility program into an independent company called Also on March 26, 2025, with $105 million in funding from Eclipse Ventures. Rivian contributed employees, intellectual property, and fixed assets, retained a 49.8% ownership stake as of March 31, 2025, and kept significant influence through board representation.

Also’s first clearly detailed consumer product is the TM-B, a software-heavy Class 3 electric bike. But the company’s larger ambition is broader: a technology platform for multiple small electric vehicles, including consumer bikes, passenger and cargo vehicles, commercial quads, and eventually autonomous delivery applications.

What is Also?

Also is a micromobility startup created from a Rivian program that operated in stealth for roughly its first three years. Its stated goal is to develop a vertically integrated technology stack that can be adapted to different small electric-vehicle formats, use cases, price points, and international markets.

The company’s launch materials described a gap between full-size passenger vehicles and the smaller vehicles needed for short urban trips. That includes commuting through dense city centers, local deliveries, food and parcel logistics, and other last-mile transportation tasks where a car or van may be unnecessarily large.

Also initially expected to launch its first flagship consumer product in the United States and Europe in 2026, with later products tailored for markets in Asia and South America. Those plans and timelines are subject to change, and product availability, pricing, and legal configuration can vary by market.

How the Rivian spinout was structured

The transaction was not a complete separation in which Rivian sold the project and walked away. Rivian’s March 31, 2025 Form 10-Q said the automaker contributed certain employees, intellectual property, and fixed assets that had been dedicated to micromobility development.

Party Role in Also
Rivian Contributed people, intellectual property, and fixed assets; owned 49.8% of Also as of March 31, 2025; appointed a director; and retained significant influence.
Eclipse Ventures Provided the $105 million investment associated with Also’s launch and held the remaining ownership interest reported in the launch structure.
RJ Scaringe Rivian’s CEO separately joined Also’s board.

That ownership structure matters. Calling Also “Rivian-owned” would be inaccurate based on the filing. Calling it unrelated to Rivian would also miss the point: the startup began inside Rivian, uses expertise developed there, and remained financially and strategically connected to the automaker.

Why Rivian was interested in micromobility

Rivian’s core business is large electric vehicles, but many urban journeys do not need a pickup truck, SUV, or delivery van. Smaller electric vehicles can require less energy and road space, simplify parking, and make short-distance trips or local deliveries more practical.

Also’s thesis is that Rivian’s experience with larger EVs could transfer to smaller platforms. The relevant expertise includes:

  • battery systems and energy management;
  • power electronics and electric propulsion;
  • vehicle computers and software;
  • over-the-air updates and connected services;
  • manufacturing and supplier relationships; and
  • the ability to create one technology base for several vehicle formats.

That is a strategic rationale, not proof that Rivian technology will automatically make Also vehicles inexpensive, reliable, or easy to manufacture at scale. A small EV still has to meet safety and regulatory requirements, achieve dependable production, find customers, and make its business model work.

The TM-B is Also’s first major consumer product

By October 2025, Also had introduced the TM-B, short for Transcendent Mobility-Bike. The company describes it as a Class 3 electric bike with a starting price of $3,500. The Performance version starts at $4,500, according to the company’s product page.

Also’s reservation flow lists a $50 fully refundable deposit. A reservation is not the same as a completed purchase, however, and the existence of a reservation option does not independently establish a firm delivery date or broad market availability.

A different kind of e-bike drivetrain

The TM-B does not use the conventional chain-and-derailleur arrangement found on most electric bicycles. Its DreamRide system uses a generator to convert the rider’s pedaling into electricity, while software controls the drive response to the motor.

According to Also, DreamRide supports:

  • automatic and manual riding modes;
  • software-defined gearing;
  • pedal amplification;
  • throttle functionality where local regulations allow it;
  • assistance intended to make hills feel flatter; and
  • regenerative braking.

These are manufacturer-described functions, not independently tested performance results. The actual feel of the drivetrain, noise, efficiency, hill-climbing ability, and maintenance requirements remain important questions for an eventual buyer.

Modular frames for different uses

The TM-B is designed around interchangeable top frames. Also says riders can change the frame in less than three seconds without tools. The available concepts are intended to support different uses, including:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • solo riding;
  • utility and cargo carrying; and
  • carrying a passenger.

The company states that the standard top frame supports a 276-pound load and offers small and large sizing ranges. That figure should not be treated as a universal recommendation for every rider or load configuration. Fit, handling, local regulations, passenger equipment, and the precise meaning of the listed load rating all deserve confirmation before purchase.

Battery and range

Also lists two battery configurations:

Battery Manufacturer-stated range
Standard Up to 60 miles
Large Up to 100 miles

The “up to” qualifier is essential. Also warns that real-world range can vary significantly with terrain, rider weight, riding mode, and weather. The figures should therefore be understood as manufacturer estimates under favorable conditions, not as an independently verified road-test result.

The battery is removable, described by Also as built to automotive standards, and can be charged through USB-C at up to 240 watts. Also also says the battery can operate as a high-capacity power bank for other devices. Owners considering a high-wattage USB-C charger and cable should confirm the required voltage, wattage, connector, and charging protocol rather than assuming every USB-C accessory will work.

Connected features

The TM-B includes a 2.75-inch touchscreen called the Portal. It displays ride information and provides integrated navigation. Also additionally lists audio integration, turn signals, lighting, over-the-air software updates, and a companion mobile app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security features listed by the company include:

  • real-time GPS location;
  • tamper alerts; and
  • proximity locking and unlocking.

Connected tracking and alerts may make recovery and monitoring easier, but they do not make theft impossible. A rider should still consider a high-security bike lock and sensible parking practices. No third-party lock should be assumed to be officially compatible with the TM-B unless Also documents that compatibility.

Also is more than an e-bike company

The TM-B is the company’s most concrete consumer product, but reducing Also to “Rivian’s e-bike company” understates the strategy. In an October 2025 announcement, Also introduced two four-wheel TM-Q pedal-assist electric quads for consumer and commercial applications, as well as a connected helmet.

The company also described collaboration with Amazon on a custom pedal-assist e-cargo quad. That is better understood as a commercial-mobility development than as evidence that Amazon sells the TM-B or that a consumer can order the delivery vehicle through Amazon.

The modular approach gives Also several potential markets:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Personal transportation: commuting and short urban trips.
  • Utility riding: carrying groceries, equipment, or other small loads.
  • Passenger mobility: transporting another person where the configuration and local rules permit it.
  • Commercial delivery: food, parcels, and other last-mile logistics.
  • Fleet and service uses: compact vehicles for businesses operating in dense areas.

Generic cargo bags, panniers, passenger seats, and child carriers should not be assumed to fit the TM-B simply because it has a modular frame. Compatibility and safety depend on the exact frame, mounting points, weight limits, and applicable regulations.

Funding after the $105 million launch

The initial funding announced at the spinout was $105 million from Eclipse Ventures. Later 2025 reporting said Also raised another $200 million from Greenoaks Capital, bringing reported total funding to $305 million and putting the company’s reported valuation at approximately $1 billion.

Those later financing and valuation figures were reported by trade press rather than independently verified here through a company filing, so they should be treated as reported figures tied to 2025—not as permanent or audited measures of the business.

What the DoorDash relationship adds

In 2026, Also and DoorDash announced work on autonomous delivery vehicles. The reported arrangement included DoorDash participation in Also’s $200 million Series C and a DoorDash board seat.

This reinforces the commercial side of Also’s strategy, particularly the potential for last-mile delivery. It does not mean autonomous delivery vehicles are already broadly deployed, nor does it turn the consumer TM-B into an autonomous vehicle. The development is best viewed as a signal that Also is pursuing both individual transportation and business logistics.

The central business challenge

Also’s proposition is compelling on paper: apply modern EV software and hardware to vehicles that are smaller, more efficient, and more flexible than cars. The difficulty is execution.

The TM-B’s technology could distinguish it from ordinary e-bikes, but it may also create added complexity. A buyer will want clear answers about drivetrain service, battery replacement, software support, connectivity costs, crash repair, parts availability, and what happens if the company changes or ends a connected feature.

The price also places the TM-B in a premium part of the e-bike market. At $3,500 before accessories or potential delivery costs—and $4,500 for the Performance version—it must offer more than basic electric assistance to justify the cost. The modular frames, software-defined drivetrain, connected display, navigation, security features, and battery options are intended to provide that additional value.

Bottom line

Rivian’s Also spinout is a bet that the automaker’s EV engineering experience can support a new generation of smaller electric vehicles. The $105 million Eclipse-backed launch created a standalone company while leaving Rivian with a substantial ownership and governance connection.

The TM-B shows that the project became a real consumer product rather than remaining a vague micromobility concept. Its premium price, software-defined propulsion, modular frames, connected functions, and claimed range make it unusual among e-bikes. The TM-Q quads, Amazon cargo-vehicle collaboration, and DoorDash autonomous-delivery work reveal the broader ambition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unanswered question is whether Also can turn that ambitious technology platform into vehicles that are affordable enough, reliable enough, legally adaptable, and easy enough to support at scale for both everyday riders and commercial operators.

How much does the Also TM-B cost?

The company lists the TM-B at a starting price of $3,500 and the Performance version at $4,500. Its reservation page lists a $50 fully refundable deposit. Pricing, availability, and delivery timing can change by market and over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far can the Also TM-B travel on one charge?

Also lists up to 60 miles with the standard battery and up to 100 miles with the large battery. Those are manufacturer estimates, and actual range varies with terrain, rider weight, riding mode, and weather.

Is Also making vehicles other than the TM-B?

The company later introduced TM-Q four-wheel pedal-assist quads and described an Amazon collaboration on a custom pedal-assist e-cargo quad. In 2026, Also and DoorDash announced work on autonomous delivery vehicles. These developments indicate a commercial strategy, not proof of broad consumer availability or mass deployment.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Also is a Rivian-originated micromobility company, not a wholly Rivian-owned e-bike brand. It launched with $105 million from Eclipse while Rivian retained 49.8% ownership as of March 31, 2025. The TM-B is its first detailed consumer vehicle, but the larger plan includes modular small EVs, commercial quads, cargo delivery, and autonomous last-mile applications. Its specifications remain primarily manufacturer claims, and availability, legal configuration, delivery timing, and real-world performance require verification.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
