What are the Rivian R3 and R3X?
R3 is a planned midsize crossover built on Rivian’s midsize platform. R3X is its planned performance variant, which Rivian says will offer enhanced dynamic ability on and off the road. The company has not described R3X as a separate platform. Rivian introduced both models alongside R2 in March 2024, and its 2025 annual report continued to describe them as future vehicles. When will the Rivian R3 and R3X come out?
Rivian has not published model-specific customer delivery dates for the R3 or R3X in the cited announcements and filings. Its March 2024 announcement said deliveries would begin after R2, a sequencing decision Rivian said was intended to support a smooth R2 launch and ramp.
Rivian’s April 30, 2026 results release said production at its Georgia facility remained on track to begin in late 2028. That is a facility-level plan for the midsize platform, not confirmation that R3 or R3X customer deliveries will begin in late 2028. The company said the revised first phase is planned for annual capacity of 300,000 midsize-platform vehicles; that is not an R3 production target or delivery forecast. How much will the Rivian R3 cost?
Rivian has said the R3 will be priced below the R2, but has not announced an R3 or R3X price. The approximately $45,000 starting price mentioned in the March 2024 reveal referred to the expected starting price of R2, not either R3 model. The available information supports a difference in intended character, not a definitive numerical comparison. Rivian has not published final R3X power output, battery capacity, dimensions, ground clearance, towing rating, EPA range, or a production trim walk in the cited sources. What range, acceleration and charging has Rivian announced?
Rivian’s March 2024 reveal gave early estimates for the R2/R3 platform, not a finalized R3 or R3X specification sheet. These figures are manufacturer claims, not independent tests or certified R3 range figures.
- Range: Rivian estimated over 300 miles for the larger R2/R3 battery pack. It did not identify this as a final R3 or R3X figure or as EPA-certified range.
- Acceleration: Rivian said the quickest R2/R3 configuration would reach 0–60 mph in under three seconds. The announcement did not identify that configuration as R3X-only.
- DC fast charging: Rivian said charging from 10% to 80% would take under 30 minutes, and described native NACS charging and CCS charging using an adapter. The announcement does not identify a specific R3-compatible adapter product.

How does R3 fit into Rivian’s rollout and Volkswagen collaboration?
Rivian announced R2, R3 and R3X together, but said R3 and R3X deliveries would follow R2. Its 2025 annual report described the Georgia facility as a future source of midsize-platform vehicles, including R2 and R3, with first-line production expected in 2028. Volkswagen Group says technologies developed through its joint venture with Rivian are intended for R2, R3 and R3X. The update does not commit to a particular R3 or R3X feature or specification, so it should be read as a planned technology input rather than a confirmed equipment list. Rivian described an initial North American launch, with international availability planned afterward. The cited announcements do not specify which countries will receive the vehicles or when. Individual market timing and regulatory range ratings therefore remain unconfirmed.
