What is the second Rivian R2 recall for?

The campaign summary, reproducing NHTSA data, lists 14 potentially affected vehicles built between May 18 and August 27, 2026. “Potentially affected” describes the campaign population, not the number of vehicles known to have a loose fastener. Rivian reportedly told NHTSA it knew of no customer reports, crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the issue. RoadVitals’ recall summary identifies the affected model year as 2027 R2.

Recall coverage is specific to a vehicle identification number (VIN). Check with Rivian and use NHTSA’s recall lookup; NHTSA notes that some recent recalls may not yet have every affected VIN identified, so check again as campaign data is updated. The campaign summary lists November 28, 2026 as the expected date for owner notification letters and VIN searchability. As of October 4, 2026, those were expected future dates, not confirmation that notices or lookup results were already available.

- Find your R2’s VIN and ask Rivian whether it is included in recall 26V625000.
- Check the NHTSA VIN lookup, then recheck if your vehicle is not listed but the campaign information is still being updated.
- If Rivian confirms your vehicle is covered, arrange the recall remedy through the company and follow its vehicle-specific instructions.
The published materials do not provide a blanket instruction on whether every R2 can continue to be driven before repair. Contact Rivian for direction about your vehicle rather than relying on a general answer, and do not attempt to work on the high-voltage battery connection yourself.
Will Rivian fix the battery fastener for free?
Yes. The campaign summary says Rivian will inspect and repair the connection at no charge, replacing damaged components as necessary. The exact work depends on the inspection.

How does this differ from the first R2 recall?
The earlier recall involved a rearview-camera image that could be obstructed by a notification while reversing. TechCrunch reported that the issue was addressed with a software update. A recall overview lists campaign 26V597000 for certain R1T, R1S, and R2 vehicles; it does not establish the precise number of R2s included. The second campaign is a separate hardware issue involving a high-voltage battery fastener, with inspection and repair or replacement as the stated remedy. The available information does not indicate that the two defects share a cause.

Why the R2 matters to Rivian—and what this recall does not prove
Rivian began external R2 deliveries in the second quarter of 2026 and described the SUV as important to its long-term growth and profitability. In its July 30, 2026 results release, CEO RJ Scaringe said: “I believe R2 will be a game changer for our customers and a driver of Rivian’s long-term growth and profitability.” Rivian reported Q2 revenue of $1.658 billion and gross profit of $179 million; its Q2 investor presentation gave 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance of negative $2.00 billion to negative $1.80 billion. Those company figures explain the strategic weight attached to R2, but they do not show that this recall alone threatens Rivian’s prospects.

Two recalls early in a vehicle’s launch merit attention, especially when one involves a possible loss of drive power. But the second campaign’s reported population is 14 potentially affected vehicles, not a confirmed count of failures, and the available information does not establish a broader defect rate. The recall count by itself is not evidence that the R2 launch has failed.
