What milestone did the Rivian R2 reach?
On April 22, 2026, TechCrunch reported that the first customer-ready R2 SUVs had rolled off Rivian’s line in Normal, Illinois. This was a production milestone—not merely a concept reveal or an early validation build. How did the tornado affect production?
TechCrunch reported that the milestone came days after an EF-1 tornado damaged part of the Normal plant. In a Bloomberg Television interview quoted by TechCrunch, Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said: “The tornado went through the south end of the plant, and ripped the roof off the building, and knocked down some of the plant as well, so the last 72 hours have been around the clock.” He also said, “we’re not making any changes to the plan.” Those comments describe Rivian’s stated response; they do not independently confirm that the damage had no effect on output or timing. What does the production ramp look like?
On Rivian’s September 29, 2026 earnings call, executive Chip Newcom described a progression from design-validation builds to manufacturing-validation builds and then production shifts. Newcom cited annualized run-rate capacity of 215,000 vehicles for the Normal plant, with roughly 155,000 to 160,000 allocated to R2. These are management’s capacity figures, not actual R2 production, deliveries, or utilization. They indicate the scale Rivian says the facility is intended to support, not the number of vehicles currently coming off the line.
Newcom put the immediate constraint plainly: “it’s really the supply chain right now that is constraining production within the plant.” That statement was made on the September 29 call and identifies the supply chain as management’s reported bottleneck at that point in the ramp.

What has Rivian said about R2 costs and design?
On the September 29 call, Newcom said Rivian expected the R2 bill of materials to be about half the R1’s. He also described a move from the R1’s fully active air suspension to a semi-active MacPherson strut configuration, which he said reduced suspension cost by 70%. What prices have been reported for the R2?
TechCrunch’s April 22, 2026 report described three different price points or plans. They are dated reported figures, not confirmation of current configurations, ordering availability, or delivery slots.

What is known about Autonomy Plus?
On September 29, Newcom said Launch Edition R2 buyers received Autonomy Plus as part of their purchase. He also said Rivian had not yet quantified the take rate for R2 versions beyond Launch Edition. When will R2 deliveries begin?
The available reporting and call statements do not establish official R2 delivery totals, current configuration availability, or delivery timing by region as of October 8, 2026. The April report’s planned prices and dates should not be read as confirmation of what can be ordered now or when a particular buyer will receive a vehicle. Buyers should rely on current Rivian information for their market and configuration.
