The most-cited list of this kind, from Top Gear’s December 2013 coverage, names eleven cars, and it describes them as a selection taken on a joint road trip with Jeremy Clarkson rather than as a personal ranking. What can be documented is a small number of individual cars linked to Hammond as favourites, each from a different context and type of source.
What the 2013 Top Gear list actually names
Top Gear’s article on the new Top Gear DVD (published 1 December 2013) describes a road trip planned by Clarkson and Hammond, for which the pair took along a few favourite cars. The article names the following, in its own wording:

Eleven cars is the count in that article, not fifteen. The page presents the selection as the trip’s cars, so the individual favourite claims discussed below should not be merged with it.
Cars linked to Hammond as favourites
Three sources make individual claims about Hammond’s favourite cars. They differ in how close they are to his own words, and the table shows how each is framed.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
| Car | Source | How it is framed | Date of source | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1962 E-Type roadster | Top Gear | Described as “Hammond’s very own” car, within the joint Clarkson–Hammond trip selection | 1 December 2013 | Editorial description; not a direct Hammond quote |
| 1960 E-Type Coupe | NEC Restoration Show session summary | Called “one of his all-time favourite cars”; The Smallest Cog is reported to be restoring it | Summary reviewed 8 October 2026; date of the interview not stated | Event summary; Hammond’s own wording not located |
| Opel Kadett (2007 Botswana Challenge Special) | MotorEasy | Reported as the car Hammond has said is his favourite, in the context of the Botswana special | Page reviewed 8 October 2026; date of Hammond’s remark not stated | Secondary reporting; original statement not located |
The two E-Types are different cars. The 1962 roadster is the one Top Gear tied to the trip, and the 1960 Coupe is the one the 2026 session summary describes as a favourite. Neither source establishes that Hammond ranks his favourites in any order, and the Kadett claim is tied to a single special-build car rather than to his road cars in general.
How to judge a “favourite cars” claim
When a headline promises a specific number of personal favourites, check the following before accepting it:
- Attribution: Is the car described as the presenter’s personal choice, or as part of a shared or event selection?
- Count: Does the number in the headline appear in the source? Here the named 2013 list has eleven cars.
- Source type: A direct interview or the presenter’s own words carry more weight than a summary or a secondary write-up.
- Date and context: A 2013 selection for a road trip and a 2026 event description can both be accurate and still answer different questions.
- Exact model: Two cars of the same model, such as the 1962 roadster and the 1960 Coupe, are not interchangeable.

The Perfect Road Trip, the film that the 2013 Top Gear article discusses in connection with its DVD release, was documented on that page as available on DVD and Blu-ray. It is useful background to the trip, but it is not evidence for any favourites list. Check current retailers for availability, as the 2013 page does not establish present-day stock.
