That combination makes it an unusually coherent modern Land Cruiser. The compromise is practical rather than mechanical: it seats five, has a high cargo floor and limited rear-seat and cargo usefulness for its size and price.
How does the 2025 Land Cruiser drive?
Toyota’s U.S. 2025 Land Cruiser pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with its i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. Toyota quotes 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, and equips the model with full-time four-wheel drive. Those are manufacturer specifications for the U.S. model, not independent test measurements. The hybrid system gives the Land Cruiser a useful blend of low-speed response and passing power on paper, though reviewers describe its behavior with some nuance.
Car and Driver praises the hybrid powertrain and says the SUV rides smoothly and more quietly on pavement than some hardcore off-road rivals. It also notes that electric boost can feel inconsistent. Edmunds, in a review updated September 22, 2026, describes routine hybrid response as smooth but says highway passing power may feel limited. Edmunds also reports heavy steering and brake dive during sudden stops, while finding the ride composed over bumps.
That mix suits the Land Cruiser’s intended role: it is not a sports SUV, but it is designed to cover ordinary roads without making its off-road hardware feel like a constant penalty. These are outlet-specific review impressions, not a claim that every driver will experience the vehicle identically.

What makes it a capable off-roader?
The case for the Land Cruiser begins with equipment, not styling. Toyota says the U.S. 2025 model has standard full-time 4WD, center and rear locking differentials, and low-range capability. Toyota also lists a maximum tow rating of 6,000 pounds. These are manufacturer figures and equipment claims; towing capacity depends on vehicle configuration and proper loading, so owners should consult the vehicle’s manual and ratings before towing.
Toyota’s October 1, 2024 announcement details the U.S. model’s drivetrain and capability. Car and Driver calls it a true off-roader and highlights the more manageable size: its tidier footprint is helpful on narrow trails. That is a meaningful advantage for a vehicle expected to tackle rough routes as well as commute, though capability still depends on tires, terrain, driver judgment and conditions.

How comfortable and practical is the cabin?
The U.S. 2025 Land Cruiser has two rows and five seats; there is no third-row option. That simplifies the package but limits its appeal to families who need seven-passenger seating. Car and Driver lists the absence of a third row among its drawbacks.
Edmunds reports that rear-seat legroom is a weak point and that the cargo floor sits high because of the hybrid battery placement. It discusses 37.5 cubic feet of cargo room, but also finds cargo access and overall cargo practicality limited. The headline capacity therefore does not tell the whole story: the elevated floor can make loading bulkier items less convenient, and a five-seat layout does not guarantee generous space for passengers and luggage.

Car and Driver also identifies base-trim materials as a drawback. The Land Cruiser’s appeal is more about the combination of capability and manageable dimensions than a promise of luxury-grade cabin finish or maximum utility.
How is the fuel economy?
Toyota estimated 23 mpg combined for the U.S. 2025 model in its October 2024 announcement. Car and Driver lists EPA figures of 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined, then reports 21 mpg in its own 75-mph highway test. That highway result is specific to Car and Driver’s test conditions and should not be treated as a guaranteed owner outcome or a universal real-world figure.

The distinction matters for a hybrid SUV: the powertrain is part of the Land Cruiser’s balanced execution, but it does not erase the fuel cost of a substantial four-wheel-drive vehicle. Buyers comparing it with other SUVs should look at the same type of figure—EPA estimates against estimates, or like-for-like road tests—rather than assume a single test result predicts everyday use.

Price figures need a date and context. Toyota announced a starting MSRP of $56,450 in October 2024 for the 2025 model year. The current Toyota model page and Edmunds display different starting-price values, so that historical announcement should not be read as a live asking price or a transaction quote. Toyota’s 2025 model page and Edmunds are useful places to check displayed information, but local inventory and current dealer pricing were not verified here.

Car and Driver praises the Land Cruiser’s lower price relative to the previous Land Cruiser, but that does not make it an automatic value choice for every buyer. Its strengths are unusually clear if you want genuine off-road equipment in a less cumbersome package and can make use of the hybrid powertrain. The price is harder to justify if your main needs are a third row, easy cargo loading or maximum rear-seat space.
Verdict: Was the execution brilliant?
Yes—with a specific definition of brilliant. Toyota brought together a credible off-road foundation, a torque-rich hybrid system and a smaller, more trail-friendly footprint, while keeping the vehicle composed enough for pavement. The fit between those elements is the achievement; the Land Cruiser does not need to be the roomiest or most luxurious SUV to make its concept work.
The trade-offs are substantial for some buyers: five seats, constrained rear-seat and cargo usefulness, a high cargo floor and fuel economy that can fall short of the EPA combined figure in a highway test. Car and Driver rates it 9.5/10, while Edmunds’ tested rating is 6.4/10. Those scores reflect different outlet methods, not a shared objective scale. The best conclusion is that the 2025 Land Cruiser is a particularly well-executed off-road-oriented SUV for buyers who value capability and manageable size more than maximum interior utility.
