Rev matching is bringing engine speed closer to the speed a lower gear requires before the clutch fully reconnects. In a manual car, the driver typically does this with a brief throttle blip during a downshift. The result can be a smoother shift and less driveline disturbance—not a technique every street driver must use on every downshift.
What rev matching does
When you select a lower gear, the engine needs to turn faster at a given road speed than it did in the higher gear. If the clutch reconnects while engine speed and the drivetrain’s required speed are far apart, the car may jolt as the engine is brought up to speed. Rev matching narrows that gap by briefly raising engine speed before releasing the clutch.

For a manual downshift, the basic sequence is to press the clutch, select the lower gear, briefly open the throttle to raise engine speed, and release the clutch smoothly. Honda describes its automatic system as calculating appropriate engine revs and blipping the throttle during a downshift; Nissan describes a system that calculates a target engine speed and adjusts the throttle. Why a driver might care
A well-timed rev match can make a downshift feel smoother and reduce the disturbance passed through the driveline. That matters most when braking and changing gear in performance driving, where abrupt inputs can unsettle the car. Honda says the rev-match feature in its 2026 Civic Type R feature guide is intended to support smooth downshifts and help maintain stability and precise cornering during spirited driving. That is Honda’s description of the feature, not an independently measured result.

For ordinary street driving, rev matching is an optional refinement, not a universal requirement. The sources cited here support smoother shifts and performance-control benefits; they do not establish that unmatched downshifts in a modern synchronized gearbox inherently cause damage or that rev matching guarantees longer clutch life.
What heel-and-toe means
Heel-and-toe is rev matching while braking. The driver uses the right foot to maintain brake pressure while tapping the accelerator to raise engine speed, with the left foot operating the clutch and the hand selecting a lower gear. It is a coordination technique, not a different kind of transmission.

Learn it in a suitable, controlled setting rather than trying to develop the coordination in traffic.

Rev matching is not double-clutching
Double-clutching adds a neutral step between gears: the driver disengages the clutch, selects neutral, releases and presses the clutch again, then selects the lower gear. Rev matching refers to aligning engine speed with the lower gear’s needs; a driver can rev match without that extra neutral-and-clutch sequence. Car and Driver notes that double-clutching is optional on most modern synchronized transmissions, but that statement is not a guarantee for every vehicle. Follow the owner’s manual for your car.

When to use it
- For smoother manual shifts: You can learn to blip the throttle on downshifts, but it is not mandatory for routine street driving.
- While braking and downshifting: Heel-and-toe combines braking with the throttle blip, but requires practice and is most relevant to performance driving.
- If your car has an automatic rev-match feature: Check the vehicle’s guide or manual for how it operates, which modes affect it, and whether it can be turned off.
