Restomod builders range from specialists who restore and re-engineer original classics to companies creating new vehicles inspired by historic designs. These ten offer distinct approaches, from Porsche 911s and Jaguar E-Types to electric buses and classic 4x4s. Their capabilities, prices and ownership terms below are each company’s own claims; there is no independent comparison here that establishes a single “best” builder.
What counts as a restomod?
“Restomod” is used broadly for vehicles that combine a classic car or its design with modern engineering, equipment or performance. The label does not describe one standardized process. A builder may restore an original car with sympathetic upgrades, substantially re-engineer a donor vehicle, or produce a new small-series vehicle inspired by a classic. The distinction matters: the cars below are not all made in the same way, and not every company describes all of its work as a restomod.
Ten restomod and classic-car reinterpretation builders
1. Singer Vehicle Design: reimagined Porsche 911s
Singer describes its work as restoring and reimagining Porsche 911s, with owner collaboration and a tailored personal vision at the center. Its site currently features a 911 Carrera Cabriolet reimagined by Singer. This is a bespoke, Porsche-focused approach rather than a broad range of unrelated classic models. Singer Vehicle Design
2. ICON 4×4: classic-inspired 4x4s and more
ICON’s lineup includes the C Series, FJ, BR, TR, Derelict and Reformer, alongside concepts such as an EV Bronco and Thriftmaster. The range extends beyond one classic donor or one powertrain direction, so check the specific model before assuming what vehicle or technology a commission involves. ICON 4×4

Gunther Werks says it re-engineers Porsche 993s in California, combining powertrain work, carbon-fiber bodywork and bespoke cabin treatments. The names alone do not tell you whether you are buying a restored original, a heavily re-engineered donor car or a new vehicle inspired by a classic. Use the builder’s specific model description to establish what the car is and what work is included.

How to choose a builder
Start with the car you want to own, then determine whether you want an original vehicle transformed or a new interpretation of its design. The following questions help separate a compelling concept from a suitable commission:
- What is the starting point? Ask whether the build uses your car, a builder-sourced donor, a restored original or a new vehicle inspired by a historic model.
- What exactly changes? Request a written specification for chassis, engine or motor, body, interior, safety equipment and included options. A broad term such as “reimagined” does not establish the exact scope.
- Is the powertrain right for you? Confirm the fuel or charging requirements and whether the specific model—not merely the company’s lineup—offers the powertrain you want.
- What does the displayed price include? For a starting price or bespoke commission, ask what donor, options, taxes, transport and other charges are included, and how the quote can change.
- What are the written ownership terms? Obtain the warranty document and clarify coverage, exclusions, service arrangements and where work can be performed.
- What is the order and delivery plan? Ask about current order status, build schedule, deposits and cancellation terms directly; the information cited here does not establish delivery times.
- Can you inspect the exact build? Request documentation and, where possible, an inspection of the specific vehicle or a completed example with a comparable specification.
What this list cannot establish
The builders’ own pages can identify their models, services and selected terms, but they do not provide a common basis for ranking quality. The available information does not establish comparative reliability, independent performance rankings, real-world service costs, delivery wait times or resale values. Those depend on the individual vehicle, its specification, use and support arrangements; ask for evidence tied to the particular build rather than inferring it from a brand’s marketing claims.
