Carscoops reports that U.S. motor vehicle maintenance and repair costs rose 60% from January 2019 to August 2026, compared with 32% overall inflation over the same period. That is the basis for the “twice as much” headline—but the comparison is Carscoops’ calculation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) series, not a figure independently reproduced here. It describes a national price index, not what every driver or repair shop experienced.
What the report says—and what the numbers measure
Carscoops says it used the BLS Consumer Price Index series for motor vehicle maintenance and repair, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis’ FRED database, to calculate the 60% increase. It compares that with a reported 32% rise in overall inflation from January 2019 through August 2026. The two percentages refer to the same stated period, but the retrieved FRED page establishes the repair index and its latest observation—not the full 2019-to-2026 calculation.
The FRED series is the U.S. city average for motor vehicle maintenance and repair. Its seasonally adjusted August 2026 observation was 465.136 index points; FRED said the series was updated September 11, 2026. An index point is not a dollar amount or a typical repair bill. The percentage change is a measure of prices represented by the index, not a prediction of any one driver’s costs.
Accordingly, “nearly twice as fast” is a fair shorthand for the two increases Carscoops reports, not proof that every repair category, vehicle, or invoice rose by that ratio. The comparison is U.S.-specific and depends on the stated endpoints and the calculation used.

Why modern repairs can involve more work and equipment
Carscoops points to the diagnostic demands of newer vehicles as one explanation for pressure on repair costs. It reports that mechanic Ralph Czeisler told CNBC that shops may need laptops, brand-specific diagnostic equipment, and subscription software. The CNBC interview page was not available in the material reviewed, so this account and the quotation below are attributed to Carscoops.
“I have multiple computers for domestic, Asian, European cars, and it’s very costly. Every year they make changes, and it costs more money and more money. And it’s getting very challenging,” Czeisler said, as quoted by Carscoops.

Carscoops also reports that one mechanic put the cost of a calibration machine at $28,000 and a computer at $12,000. Those are individual equipment-cost anecdotes, not industry averages or a standard charge passed on to each customer. A shop’s actual investment and how it factors into estimates can vary.
Windshield replacement can involve camera calibration
Some vehicles have an advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) camera mounted near the windshield. If windshield work affects that camera or its view, the vehicle may require calibration as part of the repair. That can add labor, equipment, and procedure requirements; it does not mean every windshield replacement needs calibration. Ask the shop to explain whether calibration is specified for your vehicle and why.

Collision repair is a different measure
Carscoops cites a 2023 AAA study as reporting a 37.6% increase in collision repair costs. The original study was not available in the material reviewed, so that figure should be treated as Carscoops’ attribution, not as independently verified here. Collision repair is also a different category from the BLS motor vehicle maintenance-and-repair CPI; the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable or combined.

A national index cannot tell you whether a particular estimate is reasonable. To compare quotes for the same job, request a written, itemized scope and check that each shop is quoting equivalent work.

- Ask for parts, labor, and any diagnostic charges to be listed separately.
- Check whether diagnostic or manufacturer-specific software access is included or billed separately.
- If ADAS calibration is proposed, ask which system requires it and whether the procedure is included in the estimate.
- Confirm whether the quoted parts and procedures meet the requirements for your exact make, model, and repair.
For GM ADAS collision repairs involving Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles, Carscoops reports that GM requires new genuine parts and its prescribed repair and calibration procedures; it describes used or reconditioned components in that specific context as “strictly prohibited.” This is a reported policy for the named GM brands and repair work, not a rule that applies to every automaker or every repair. Carscoops’ August 18, 2026 article cites Autobodynews and GM Parts for the position.
What the comparison can—and cannot—explain
The reported gap between repair inflation and overall inflation shows that the repair index rose more over the chosen period. The cited examples suggest ways repair complexity can add cost, but they do not establish how much technology contributed to the index’s increase. The figures supplied do not separately measure the effects of parts prices, wages, insurance practices, vehicle mix, shop overhead, or other factors.
