A 2026 report says General Motors plans new 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78 small-block V8s for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The reported outputs are higher than those of the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter engines they replace, but the larger V8 is not the reported towing leader: properly equipped trucks with the 5.7-liter are listed with higher maximum tow ratings.
What the report says is changing for 2027
Guessing Headlights, in a report carried by Yahoo Autos on September 21, 2026, says the 2027 Silverado and Sierra will replace their familiar 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s with a 5.7-liter L76 and a 6.6-liter L78. The report supplies the power, torque and towing figures below; they have not been independently confirmed against a GM specification sheet.
Reported power and towing figures
| Reported engine | Horsepower | Torque | Reported maximum towing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.7-liter L76 | 402 hp | 428 lb-ft | Silverado: 13,700 lb; Sierra: 13,500 lb, each when properly equipped |
| 6.6-liter L78 | 481 hp | 501 lb-ft | Silverado: 9,700 lb; Sierra: 9,400 lb |
All figures in this table are attributed to Guessing Headlights’ September 21, 2026 report carried by Yahoo Autos. Tow ratings depend on truck configuration; the report does not establish that every version with either engine can achieve the stated maximum.
How the reported engines compare with the outgoing V8s
The report uses the outgoing 5.3-liter’s 355 hp and 383 lb-ft, and the outgoing 6.2-liter’s 420 hp and 460 lb-ft, as its comparison baseline. Against those figures, the new engines are reported to deliver the following gains:
#1 Best Overall
- Made of diecast metal with detailed interor, measuring 9x3x3 inches
- Openable doors, tailgate and removable bed cover
- Licensed product
- Ship in a corrugated mailer box for better protection
- 5.7-liter L76 versus 5.3-liter: 47 more horsepower and 45 lb-ft more torque.
- 6.6-liter L78 versus 6.2-liter: 61 more horsepower and 41 lb-ft more torque.
The old-engine outputs and new-engine figures are all from the same secondary report, not a separately verified GM comparison. The report does not provide independent road-test results, so these output claims alone do not show how the trucks will perform in real-world acceleration or while towing.
Which reported V8 can tow more?
On the figures in the report, the 5.7-liter is paired with the higher maximum tow rating: up to 13,700 pounds for a properly equipped Silverado and 13,500 pounds for a comparable Sierra. The 6.6-liter’s reported maxima are 9,700 pounds for Silverado and 9,400 pounds for Sierra. That means the most powerful reported engine is not the one associated with the highest maximum tow capacity.

These are model-level maximums, not a guarantee for a particular truck. Cab, bed, drivetrain, equipment and other configuration details can affect a vehicle’s tow rating. Buyers should use the final rating for the exact truck, once GM publishes specifications and configuration guidance.

The cited report does not establish final trim availability, pricing, fuel economy or independent real-world performance for either engine. Nor does the material reviewed here include a GM specification sheet confirming the names and figures. Treat the L76 and L78 details as reported plans and specifications, rather than finalized buying information, until GM publishes its own model-year 2027 data.
