Renesas and Nidec’s 8-in-1 E-Axle is a jointly developed proof of concept, not a production vehicle system announced for sale. Its design brings together eight drivetrain and power-system functions under the control of one Renesas microcontroller (MCU) and one power-management IC (PMIC).
What the 8-in-1 E-Axle integrates
An E-Axle conventionally groups an electric drive motor, reduction gear and inverter. Renesas and Nidec’s PoC expands that integration to include five additional vehicle-power functions, with a single MCU and PMIC coordinating the integrated system.
The eight functions
- Motor
- Reduction gear
- Inverter
- DC/DC converter
- On-board battery charger (OBC)
- Power distribution unit (PDU)
- Battery management system (BMS)
- Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater control
The motor and gear are physical drivetrain components; the announcement describes the MCU as controlling the eight-function system. It does not mean the MCU mechanically operates the motor or gear. Renesas says consolidating control reduces component count, cost and size, but does not publish a quantified comparison with a less-integrated design.
Published performance figures
Renesas’s November 11, 2024 announcement gives the following ratings for the PoC demonstration design. They are not specifications for every E-Axle or a guarantee of performance in a production vehicle.

These figures describe selected electrical ratings. The announcement does not provide a complete package size or mass, thermal-management details, vehicle-level efficiency, or a production-ready specification.
Which companies supply the hardware
Renesas names its 32-bit RH850/U2B automotive-control MCU, an MCU PMIC, the RAJ2930004AGM isolated gate driver, an IGBT module for the inverter, and power devices for the DC/DC converter and OBC. Nidec contributes the motor and reduction gear. The announcement does not identify a public ordering channel for the complete integrated E-Axle.

The 2024 announcement establishes that the eight-function PoC was tested at system level. It does not establish a production contract, a named vehicle program, safety certification or a mass-production start. Nor does it specify the final semiconductor material across every subsystem; the 2023 roadmap’s planned SiC and GaN choices should not be treated as a complete bill of materials for the later PoC.

No complete E-Axle purchasing route or consumer product launch is identified in the announcements. The system remains described as a proof of concept and demonstration, rather than a catalog product ready for a vehicle owner to buy. Renesas and Nidec may pursue component or vehicle-program business, but the cited announcements do not document an OEM design-in or public sales terms for this complete system.

For engineers comparing future integrated E-Axles, useful questions include how many functions are combined, how many control units are needed, the ratings and test conditions for inverter/DC/DC/OBC, semiconductor materials, package mass and size, thermal strategy, diagnostics and functional-safety coverage, and evidence of vehicle production adoption. Renesas and Nidec’s announcement provides only some of those details.
