Renault says its single-seat Filante Record demonstrator traveled 1,008 km in less than 10 hours on an 87 kWh battery, averaging 102 km/h and using 7.8 kWh/100 km. That is a striking efficiency result under Renault’s stated test conditions—not proof that it is the world’s most efficient EV in a standardized comparison with every production electric car.
What is the Renault Filante Record?
The Filante Record 2025 is a one-off, single-seat electric demonstrator built to explore efficiency, not a production car offered for sale. Renault describes it as a “laboratory on wheels.” Its 5.12 m length and approximately 1,000 kg mass are unusual for a vehicle associated with a battery the size of a passenger-car pack. Renault says its 87 kWh battery is equivalent in capacity to the one in the Scenic E-Tech electric. Renault’s announcement and its Filante Record overview describe the project and its specifications.
How far did it travel, and what did the test establish?
Renault reports that on 18 December 2025, at the UTAC test track in Morocco, the Filante covered 1,008 km in less than 10 hours without recharging. The company reports a 102 km/h average speed, consumption of 7.8 kWh/100 km and 11% battery capacity remaining at the finish. Renault characterizes the challenge as motorway-like driving at more than 100 km/h. These are Renault’s figures for its defined test, rather than a result from a standardized cross-brand road test. Renault’s test announcement gives the reported conditions and outcome.
Is it really the world’s most efficient EV?
That label needs qualification. Renault presents the run as an efficiency record achieved under its own stated conditions; the company’s material does not establish a universally standardized ranking across every EV, route and test cycle. A precise description is that Renault says the Filante Record set an efficiency benchmark by traveling 1,008 km at an average 102 km/h on an 87 kWh battery. It would be misleading to turn that into an unqualified claim that it outranks all electric vehicles in ordinary use.

The distinction matters because a purpose-built demonstrator is not directly comparable to a production EV designed for passengers, cargo, safety requirements and everyday road use. Any meaningful comparison would need aligned test speeds and routes, consumption figures, usable battery capacities, vehicle mass and aerodynamic data, as well as a clear distinction between production vehicles and prototypes. Renault’s published material does not supply a standardized, cross-brand comparison table.
What makes the Filante look like a Batmobile—and why does it matter?
The long nose, narrow body, faired wheels and exposed single-seat cockpit are functional choices as well as styling cues. They aim to reduce aerodynamic drag and frontal area, both important when a vehicle must travel quickly while using little energy. Renault says wind-tunnel work led to revisions to the wheel fairings, cockpit proportions, side surfaces and the transitions between the central cell and the wings. Renault’s project overview outlines the design work.

Reducing mass and losses
The car uses carbon fiber, composite materials, optimized structures and 3D-printed parts to keep weight down. Renault also highlights friction-reducing Michelin tyres. Together, lower mass, reduced aerodynamic drag and lower rolling resistance help limit the energy needed to keep the vehicle moving.
Using different controls
Steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire replace conventional mechanical connections with electronic control systems. Renault includes these systems among the demonstrator’s technologies; its published figures do not isolate how much each one contributed to the final consumption result.

Why the name and design reach back to earlier Renault record cars
Renault connects the Filante Record with the 40 CV des Records from 1925 and the Étoile Filante from 1956. Those predecessors inform the name and the streamlined, futuristic look. As Sandeep Bhambra, Chief Designer of Renault Advanced Design & Concept Cars, put it: “Our goal is not to look backward, but to draw on our roots to meet today’s needs. We are not aiming to break a speed record; efficiency is now the target”. Renault’s overview provides the historical context and quotation.

The Filante Record itself is an experimental demonstrator, not a preview of a specific showroom model. Renault says lessons from the project may influence future EVs, but it does not identify a production vehicle that will adopt the demonstrator’s design or specifications. Its value is as a test bed for ideas about aerodynamics, materials, tyres and vehicle systems—not as a model buyers can order.
