Four Vespa P200Es entered the 1980 Paris-Dakar motorcycle rally. Two reached the end of the route, according to a historical account—but the results list marks both as outside the time limit. The other two entries were abandoned. So “finished” needs a qualification: two made it to Dakar, but neither had an ordinary, within-time classified finish.
Which Vespas entered the 1980 rally?
The entry list records four Vespa P200Es and their riders:
| Entry | Rider | Recorded outcome |
|---|---|---|
| #5 | Yvan Tcherniavsky | Abandoned |
| #6 | Bernard Tcherniavsky | 30th; marked outside the time limit |
| #7 | Bernard Neimer | Abandoned |
| #8 | Marc Simonot | 28th; marked outside the time limit |
The entry and classification records are historical databases, rather than an official results archive. They distinguish the two abandoned entries from the two that appear in the motorcycle classification. DakarDantan explains the out-of-time marker as indicating a crew that arrived outside its allotted time. 1980 entry list; 1980 classification and legend.
Did the two listed Vespas actually finish?
A historical feature says Simonot and Bernard Tcherniavsky completed the route. That account and the classification answer different parts of the question: the feature says they got to the end, while the results record flags both as outside the time limit. They therefore should not be described as standard, within-time classified finishers. Historical account of the Vespa effort.

For a precise count, keep three measures separate: four Vespa entries; two reported to have reached the end; and zero shown as within-time classified finishers in the cited classification.
How was the Vespa effort organized?
The historical feature describes Jean-François Piot, identified there as a Honda team manager, as organizing the attempt with the modest aim of completing the rally rather than winning it. It names the two Tcherniavsky brothers, Neimer and Simonot as the riders, and says two Land Rovers accompanied them. The feature also credits Trautman and Henry Pescarolo among the support personnel. Those are details reported by that account, not independently corroborated by the entry and results lists.

When and where did the 1980 rally run?
Yamaha Community’s retrospective gives the 1980 rally’s start in Paris as 1 January and its arrival in Dakar as 14 January, with a stated distance of 10,000 kilometres. The page’s publication year is not stated. Yamaha Community’s 1980 rally retrospective.
Dakar’s official history also mentions a 10,000-kilometre journey, but its passage concerns the inaugural 1978 event, not the precise distance of the 1980 route. It says 182 vehicles set out from Place du Trocadéro on 26 December 1978 and 74 reached Senegal’s capital. Those figures belong to 1978 and should not be conflated with the Vespa entries two years later. Dakar’s historical account.
