That is the real test of Polestar’s unusual design. The question is not simply whether the camera produces a good image. The question is whether the camera-and-screen system becomes an invisible part of driving after hours on the road—or remains a constant reminder that the conventional fallback has been removed.

Polestar carried the idea from the Precept concept into production. The company’s official explanation of the decision is concise: the absence of the rear window was an intentional design feature, replaced by a roof-mounted camera and digital rearview display. Polestar’s support page also distinguishes this normal rearward view from the car’s separate reversing and surrounding-camera systems.
Key takeaways
- The Polestar 4 has no conventional rear window; a roof-mounted camera and digital rearview display provide the normal rearward driving view.
- Cars.com reported good resolution, useful low-light performance, and no major image degradation in light rain, but also warned that the display’s closer focal distance can cause eye strain.
- Polestar lists 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 54.2 cubic feet with the seats folded, while the camera view remains unobstructed by stacked luggage.
- According to TechRadar’s March 2025 road-trip review, the Long Range Single Motor was reported at up to 620 km WLTP and the Dual Motor at up to 590 km WLTP.
- Snow, ice, road grime, dust, and spray can degrade the camera image, and the Polestar 4 has no rear glass or wiper to provide a passive, self-cleaning fallback.
How does the Polestar 4 rear camera work?
The Polestar 4 uses a roof-mounted rear camera to feed a digital rearview display, making the camera the driver’s normal rearward view while moving rather than merely a parking aid. Polestar also equips the vehicle with separate reversing and surrounding-view camera systems, so the digital rearview display should not be confused with the 360-degree or parking-camera functions. Polestar’s official Polestar 4 support information describes the rear-window and camera arrangement.

The missing glass is deliberate, not a production compromise. Polestar says:
“The absence of a rear window was a design feature first unveiled in the Precept concept car, and it is now implemented in the Polestar 4.”
— Polestar, official Polestar 4 support page
That decision changes the act of looking behind the car. A conventional mirror reflects a view through the cabin and rear glass. The Polestar 4 instead presents an electronically generated image from outside the passenger compartment. The arrangement can show a broad, bright rearward scene even when the cargo area is full, but the driver now depends on the camera, display, software, and electrical system for that view.

Can you drive safely without a rear window?
The defensible answer is conditional: a clear digital rearview image can provide useful rearward visibility, but the Polestar 4’s missing rear glass removes a familiar passive fallback and does not make the vehicle objectively safer for every driver.
Image quality is only one part of the decision. Drivers still need to use the side mirrors, check blind areas appropriately, and use the vehicle’s surrounding and reversing cameras when maneuvering. A digital rearview display can show what is behind the vehicle, but it does not eliminate the need to understand what the side windows, mirrors, and shoulder checks can reveal.
No independent collision-reduction statistic or camera-reliability figure was established in the available research. The honest conclusion is therefore about trade-offs, not a universal safety verdict. A driver who values a wide, unobstructed, camera-based view may find the system more informative than a conventional mirror. A driver who wants a passive view that remains available without electronics may reasonably reject the design.

| Decision factor | Polestar 4 digital rearview | Conventional rear glass and mirror |
|---|---|---|
| Rearward image source | Roof-mounted camera feeding a display | Reflected view through rear glass |
| Effect of stacked cargo | Cargo does not directly block the camera’s external view | A luggage pile can obstruct the mirror’s view through the cabin |
| Focal distance | Closer display focal distance; eye strain is possible | More familiar mirror-view focal distance |
| Weather vulnerability | Camera housing can be affected by grime, spray, snow, or ice | Rear glass can be cleared with its heating and wiper arrangements |
| Fallback if the electronic view is unavailable | No conventional rear window to switch back to | The passive mirror and glass view remain available |
The final row describes the design dependency, not a claim that a Polestar 4 camera failure occurred during the published road tests. The important ownership question is whether losing the electronic rear view would leave you without a familiar alternative.

There is no single adaptation verdict: some drivers may quickly accept the display, while others may continue to notice the change in focal distance every time they look back.
Cars.com separated image quality from viewing comfort in its professional reviews. The publication reported good resolution and useful low-light performance, but its road-test summary also noted that shifting focus between the road and the nearby display could make the eyes sore. Cars.com stated:
“The rearview camera mirror in the Polestar 4 has a much closer focal distance than a conventional rearview mirror, and this can lead to eye strain.”
— Cars.com, professional Polestar 4 road test
That matters most on long drives, when the driver repeatedly alternates between looking far ahead and glancing at the screen. Drivers who already dislike screen-based mirrors, experience visual fatigue, or wear reading glasses should treat a proper day-and-night test drive as essential. There is no glass view in the Polestar 4 that can be selected when the display becomes uncomfortable.
The three-day road-trip question is therefore less about whether the camera works for ten minutes and more about whether the driver stops consciously thinking about it. The available reviews support the claim that the feed can be clear and useful; they do not support a promise that every driver will find the display effortless after several hours.

Does the Polestar 4 camera work in rain, snow, and at night?
The camera appears most convincing in clear weather and low light, remains useful in light rain according to Cars.com’s testing, and has a more obvious vulnerability to accumulated grime, snow, or ice than a conventional rear window with a wiper.
| Condition | What the published evidence supports | What the driver should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Daylight | Clear, broad rearward image is a central benefit of the system | The view is electronically presented rather than seen through the cabin |
| Low light and nighttime | Cars.com reported useful low-light performance | Judge glare and eye comfort personally, especially around dawn and dusk |
| Light rain | Cars.com reported no major degradation in light rain | Acceptable performance in light rain does not guarantee a clean image during heavy spray |
| Road grime, dust, and spray | Contamination can reduce the clarity of an otherwise functioning camera | Inspect and clean the camera housing during a long trip |
| Snow and ice | Car and Driver identified the lack of a rear-window heating and wiper-style cleaning solution as a limitation | Manual cleaning may be required; the camera does not clear itself like a conventional rear window with a wiper |
Cars.com’s Polestar 4 review is useful evidence for the distinction between image quality and comfort: a camera can remain readable while still asking the driver to refocus at a different distance. Meanwhile, Car and Driver’s test highlights that snow and contamination are practical maintenance concerns, not just theoretical electronic-failure scenarios.
How much cargo can the Polestar 4 hold?
The Polestar 4 holds 18.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, according to Polestar’s current U.S. specifications. The external camera means a stack of luggage can rise into the rear cargo area without directly blocking the digital rearview image. Polestar’s technical specifications provide the official cargo figures.
| Seat configuration | Polestar-listed cargo volume | Road-trip consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Rear seats up | 18.6 cubic feet | Useful for passengers plus ordinary luggage while retaining the digital rear view |
| Rear seats folded | 54.2 cubic feet | More room for bulky gear, with the camera view still outside the cargo pile |
Can you stack luggage in the Polestar 4?
Yes, you can stack luggage high without blocking the camera’s rearward image, which is one of the clearest practical arguments for removing the rear window. The benefit is not total rearward visibility: tall cargo can still interfere with side-window sightlines, access, loading, and the driver’s ability to look over a shoulder while maneuvering.
For a trip with muddy shoes, wet bags, or loose gear, a Polestar 4 cargo liner is a more directly useful add-on than a generic screen accessory. Polestar’s official accessory configurator lists a reversible, waterproof luggage-compartment mat with bumper protection. Check the model year and cargo-floor configuration before ordering; the accessory is a category recommendation, not a claim that every liner fits every Polestar 4.

The Polestar 4 can be a strong road-trip vehicle when charging access is predictable and the selected variant matches the route, but WLTP range is a rating rather than a guaranteed highway distance.

According to TechRadar’s March 2025 road-trip review, the Long Range Single Motor was reported at up to 620 km WLTP and the Dual Motor at up to 590 km WLTP. The same review described strong range confidence on its route and reported that the reviewer never spent more than 20 minutes at a public charger. That is one reviewer’s experience with one car, route, climate, charging network, and driving pattern—not a promise for every trip.
| Variant or charging measure | Published figure | How to use it for planning |
|---|---|---|
| Long Range Single Motor | Up to 620 km WLTP, as reported by TechRadar in 2025 | Use as a laboratory range reference, not as a guaranteed high-speed motorway distance |
| Dual Motor | Up to 590 km WLTP, as reported by TechRadar in 2025 | Compare the rated figure with the route, weather, wheels, tires, payload, and charging stops |
| DC fast charging | Up to 200 kW DC, according to Polestar’s current support material | Peak power is conditional; charger capability, battery temperature, and state of charge affect the result |
| Rapid charge session | 10% to 80% in 30 minutes, according to Polestar’s current support material | Useful for route planning, but the actual stop can vary with conditions and charger availability |
Polestar’s current charging support information lists up to 200 kW DC charging and a 10-to-80% rapid-charge time of 30 minutes. The practical road-trip test is not whether the car has an impressive maximum number; it is whether chargers on the chosen route are available, compatible, and quick enough for the passengers’ schedule.
What is good and bad about ditching the back glass?
Ditching the rear glass is good when the camera’s advantages matter more than the loss of a passive view. The same design is bad when the driver values familiarity, independent operation, or effortless cleaning more than cargo flexibility.
| Why the design is good | Why the design is bad |
|---|---|
| A roof camera can provide a broad, clear rearward image. | The driver depends on a camera, display, software, and electrical power. |
| Low-light performance can remain useful, according to Cars.com’s reviews. | The closer focal distance can contribute to eye strain. |
| Stacked luggage does not directly block the virtual rear view. | Snow, ice, grime, and road spray can contaminate the camera. |
| The missing glass contributes to the Polestar 4’s distinctive cabin and exterior design. | There is no conventional rear window to use if the screen view is disliked or unavailable. |
The key trade-off is not simply whether the screen looks better than glass in a photograph. The key trade-off is whether the driver is willing to make an electronic display the only normal rearward view.
Who will like the Polestar 4’s missing rear window?
The Polestar 4’s camera-based rear view is most convincing for drivers who prioritize an unobstructed image and flexible cargo loading, while drivers who prefer passive glass and familiar visual ergonomics should think twice.
| Driver priority | Likely fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Frequently carries luggage or tall cargo | Good fit | The virtual rear view is not directly blocked by a cargo stack |
| Wants a broad, bright rear image | Potentially good fit | Professional reviewers found the feed clear and useful in low light |
| Is sensitive to screen viewing or focal-distance changes | Questionable fit | Cars.com reported possible eye strain from the closer display focal distance |
| Drives regularly in snow, slush, dust, or heavy road spray | Questionable fit | The camera may need manual cleaning and has no rear-glass wiper fallback |
| Wants a passive view independent of electronics | Poor fit | The Polestar 4 does not provide conventional rear glass as an alternative |
Three-day road-trip preparation checklist
- Test the display before committing. Drive in bright daylight, low light, and around dawn or dusk. Pay attention to whether repeated refocusing feels comfortable rather than judging the view from a brief parking-lot glance.
- Clean the camera before departure. Light rain may be acceptable, but grime, dust, spray, snow, and ice can reduce image quality while leaving the electronics fully operational.
- Pack high, then check every rearward cue. Confirm that luggage does not interfere with side-window sightlines, mirror adjustment, or access to the cargo area even though the virtual rear view remains clear.
- Plan charging around the actual variant and route. Use the 620 km and 590 km WLTP figures as comparison points, not promised highway distances. Allow for speed, temperature, tires, payload, terrain, weather, and charger availability.
- Carry a way to protect the cargo area. A waterproof cargo liner with bumper protection is sensible for wet bags, muddy equipment, and repeated loading. Verify model year and cargo-floor fitment before purchase.
- Keep the camera system in perspective. The digital rearview display is the normal rearward view, but it does not replace side mirrors, appropriate shoulder checks, or careful use of reversing and surrounding-view cameras.
What is the three-day road-trip verdict?
The Polestar 4’s missing rear window is a successful packaging and visibility experiment with a real cost. The camera can be clear, broad, useful in low light, and immune to direct obstruction from stacked cargo. Those benefits become meaningful on a long trip, especially when the alternative is a mirror blocked by luggage.
The design is a poor fit for drivers who want a passive, familiar, failure-independent view behind them or who experience eye strain from the display’s focal distance. Snow and road grime add a maintenance concern that a conventional rear window and wiper largely solve. Ditching the back glass was therefore a good idea for the right driver—but the Polestar 4 makes that driver choose the camera every time.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Polestar 4 can make a three-day road trip easier when its clear digital rearview, low-light usefulness, and cargo-unobstructed view fit your priorities. The same design can become tiring or inconvenient when screen focus, snow, grime, or electronic dependence matters more than the styling and packaging benefits.
