Range Rover is a distinct JLR brand and vehicle family; Land Rover is still used as a broad vehicle-range identity on the company’s consumer site. JLR’s current brand language groups Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar as separate brands, so “Range Rover is just a Land Rover model” is no longer a complete description of how the company presents them. The names overlap in everyday use because of their shared history and Land Rover’s continuing umbrella-style range pages.
How JLR uses the names today
JLR describes itself as a “House of Brands” comprising Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. In that structure, Range Rover is a brand in its own right, not merely one model alongside other Land Rover models. The company’s Who we are page also traces the company’s history and its vehicle marques.
At the same time, Land Rover’s consumer website still calls its selection the “Land Rover global range.” That range includes Range Rover, Defender and Discovery vehicles. The terms therefore appear at different levels: Range Rover names one brand and family, while Land Rover remains a familiar broad identity for the wider group of vehicles on those pages. JLR’s model comparison page cautions that specifications and availability vary by market.
Which vehicles belong to each family?
Range Rover
Land Rover’s Range Rover family page groups four vehicles under the Range Rover name: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. The manufacturer positions the family around luxury and refinement; that is brand positioning, not an independent comparative test. Defender
The Defender family page lists Defender 90, 110 and 130. JLR positions Defender around durability, functionality and off-road capability. Design Director and Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern described it as “Tough, durable and highly functional,” a statement of the manufacturer’s view rather than an independent assessment. Discovery
Discovery is positioned around family versatility, including seating, storage and use with pets, as well as off-road capability. Land Rover’s FAQ says Discovery and Range Rover are similar in size, so do not assume Discovery is always larger. Its exact seating and cargo layout depends on the particular model and specification. Why the names are often confused
The names have been associated for decades. JLR’s history timeline dates the launch of the Series 1 Land Rover to 1948 and the Range Rover to 1970. That shared lineage, alongside today’s continuing use of “Land Rover” for a global vehicle range, helps explain why people often use Land Rover as a catch-all term even as JLR presents Range Rover, Defender and Discovery as distinct brands.

- Choose the family by intended use. Range Rover’s manufacturer positioning stresses luxury and refinement; Defender stresses durability and off-road capability; Discovery stresses family versatility. Treat those descriptions as starting points, not proof that every vehicle in a family performs identically.
- Compare exact models and body variants. A Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and full-size Range Rover are not interchangeable. Defender 90, 110 and 130 also differ in body configuration. Compare the actual vehicles you are considering rather than the family names alone.
- Check seats and cargo space in the chosen specification. Seating, storage and equipment depend on model and configuration. Discovery is presented for seven-seat family use, but verify the exact vehicle’s configuration rather than assuming every model or market has the same arrangement.
- Confirm market and model-year details. Availability and specifications vary by region and vehicle specification. Use the official local configurator or ask a retailer to confirm the model year, powertrain, equipment and seating layout before comparing prices or making a decision.
What the names do not tell you
- They do not establish that every Range Rover is more luxurious than every Defender or Discovery; the manufacturer’s positioning describes family emphasis, not a universal vehicle-by-vehicle ranking.
- They do not establish a single size hierarchy. Land Rover says Discovery and Range Rover are similar in size, and exact dimensions depend on the models being compared.
- They do not provide a reliability, running-cost or performance verdict. Those require evidence about specific models, years, powertrains and conditions; the family names alone are not enough.
