The documented timeline shows Ram prioritized the Ramcharger before the BEV was canceled, but it does not prove one caused the other. More than a year later, Stellantis canceled the BEV and cited profitable scale, customer demand, and regulatory changes. The company did not attribute the decision to the Ramcharger’s V6 generator, nor did it publish a causal breakdown assigning weight to each factor. The most accurate reading is that Ram’s strategy shifted toward a range-extended option as demand for half-ton BEVs slowed, followed by a separate corporate decision to cancel the planned BEV.
What was the difference between the Ram 1500 REV and Ramcharger?
Both were announced as electric-drive pickups, but their energy sources differed. The REV was a battery-electric truck intended to run on stored electricity. The Ramcharger paired a smaller battery with an onboard V6-powered generator, giving it a way to generate electricity without relying solely on charging stops. The figures below are manufacturer-announced specifications or targets, not independent test results; the range targets should not be treated as directly comparable test measurements.

Stellantis announced the REV’s battery options, range, towing, payload, and charging targets in April 2023. It announced the Ramcharger’s architecture and performance targets in November 2023; the 663-horsepower and 0–60 mph targets also appeared in Ram’s December 2024 update.
How does the Ramcharger’s V6 generator work?
The V6 was announced as a generator power source, not as a conventional engine mechanically driving the wheels. Ram said the engine’s mechanical power turns a 130 kW generator, which converts it into electricity. That electricity can charge the 92 kWh battery or supply the high-voltage system used by the electric drive modules. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis put the distinction plainly in the 2023 announcement: “There is no direct mechanical path from the engine to the wheels.”

In practical terms, the Ramcharger was designed to provide electric drive while carrying an onboard source of electricity generation. That is why its announced range could include energy generated by gasoline, unlike the battery-electric REV’s range target. The 690-mile figure was a manufacturer target, not an independently verified result.
How did Ram’s plans change?
- April 2023: Ram announced the battery-electric REV with standard and optional battery packs and targeted ranges of up to 350 and 500 miles. The announcement described planned specifications, not tested production results.
- November 2023: Ram announced the range-extended Ramcharger, with a 92 kWh battery, a V6-connected 130 kW generator, and electric drive modules. Its performance figures were targets.

Was the REV technically obsolete before launch?
The official announcements do not establish that. They document ambitious targets, a subsequent shift in product priority, and then a cancellation grounded in profitable scale, customer demand, and regulatory changes. They do not provide independent comparisons, production testing, or market data demonstrating that the REV’s technology was obsolete.

“Obsolete” also overstates what the record can show: a product can be canceled because its expected economics or market fit are poor without its underlying technology being technically obsolete. Stellantis’s explanation supports a business and demand rationale; it does not prove that the V6 generator made the BEV uncompetitive.

Is the Ramcharger on sale now?
The official statements cited here do not establish whether the separate range-extended Ramcharger has been renamed, delayed, canceled, produced, or made available for sale. The order and launch dates Ram gave in December 2024 were historical projections and should not be read as current availability. The BEV cancellation does not, by itself, answer the Ramcharger’s status.
