Stellantis canceled its planned all-electric Ram 1500 in February 2026, citing difficulty achieving profitable scale, customer demand and changes in U.S. regulations. That does not prove Ram buyers broadly rejected electric pickups or that they prefer an extended-range truck. Ram’s separate Dakota announcement concerned a midsize pickup launched in Brazil—not a confirmed U.S. Dakota. And the Ramcharger, which had been scheduled ahead of the electric 1500, is a different powertrain proposal.
Did Ram cancel the electric Ram 1500?
Yes. In its February 2026 business reset, Stellantis said it canceled the previously planned Ram 1500 battery-electric vehicle (BEV), along with other products it said could not reach profitable scale. The company cited customer demand and U.S. regulatory changes as part of its rationale. Stellantis’s reset announcement also reported approximately €22.2 billion in charges for the second half of 2025; that figure is financial context, not a measure of customer preferences.
The cancellation ends the plan for that battery-electric Ram 1500 as announced; it does not establish that Ram has abandoned every form of electrification. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa described the reset as an effort to make customers and their preferences the company’s “guiding star.” That is the company’s stated rationale, not independent evidence that most pickup customers opposed a BEV.
What the earlier REV plan proposed
In 2023, Stellantis announced the all-electric Ram 1500 REV with a 168-kWh battery and a targeted range of up to 350 miles, or an optional 229-kWh battery and a targeted range of up to 500 miles. Those were targets for the planned BEV, not verified production figures. The plan was later canceled. The original REV announcement provides the historical specifications.

Was the Ramcharger the same truck as the electric REV?
No. They were announced with different powertrains. The REV was a battery-electric pickup: its electric motors would draw power from a large traction battery. The Ramcharger was described as a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV), also called a range-extended EV or REEV. Its electric motors drive the truck, while an onboard gasoline engine runs a generator to produce electricity.
| Question | Battery-electric REV plan | Ramcharger plan |
|---|---|---|
| What drives the wheels? | Electric motors, powered by the battery. | Electric motors, with electricity supplied by the battery and, when needed, the onboard generator. |
| Does it use gasoline onboard? | No gasoline generator was part of the announced BEV powertrain. | Yes. The announced layout included a gasoline engine powering a generator. |
| What was its announced status? | The planned BEV was canceled in Stellantis’s February 2026 reset. | Stellantis had moved it ahead of the BEV in its electrification sequence; the reviewed announcements do not establish current production timing or final specifications. |
| What did the dated schedule say? | In December 2024, Stellantis forecast a 2026 launch for the REV; that plan was superseded by the 2026 cancellation. | In December 2024, Stellantis forecast U.S. consumer orders in the first half of 2025; that dated forecast does not establish current availability. |
Because the Ramcharger’s wheels are driven electrically, it is not simply a conventional gasoline pickup with a different label. Its generator is intended to supply power when the battery needs it, so the announced layout could continue using onboard fuel when charging is unavailable. The BEV plan instead depended on charging its traction battery. Stellantis said the planned Ramcharger would support Level 2 AC charging, but final vehicle and connector details should be checked before choosing a charger. The December 2024 Ramcharger announcement describes the planned architecture and then-current schedule.

Does Ram’s Dakota announcement mean a Dakota EREV is coming to the U.S.?
No such conclusion is established. Ram announced the launch of a new midsize Dakota in Brazil in February 2026, following its public presentation in 2025. The announcement describes Warlock and Laramie versions with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel rated at 200 cv and 450 Nm. Those are Brazil-market specifications, not U.S. specifications. Ram’s Brazil launch announcement does not confirm a North American Dakota or an EREV version.
The U.S. Dakota page concerns a different context: the historical Dakota, discontinued after the 2011 model year. It says Ram currently has no midsize pickup in its U.S. lineup. The Brazil-market 2026 truck should not be confused with that discontinued U.S. model, and parts or accessories listed for the historical Dakota should not be assumed to fit the newer truck. Ram’s U.S. Dakota page gives the historical model’s status.

What did Ram mean by saying customers wanted a midsize pickup?
At the Brazil launch, Ram South America head Juliano Machado said the question he most often heard from customers was when the brand would offer a midsize pickup. That company statement explains the rationale Ram gave for the Brazil-market Dakota. It is not a published survey result, does not quantify how many customers wanted one, and does not show that customers in the United States want the same truck.
Likewise, Stellantis’s reference to customer demand in its BEV cancellation announcement does not establish a measured, population-wide preference for EREVs over battery-electric pickups. The announcements support a narrower conclusion: the company cited demand in its decision-making, and Ram said it had heard requests for a midsize pickup in South America. Neither statement confirms that “customers” as a whole rejected the electric Ram or want a Dakota EREV.
