Halo was an automotive charging system—not simply a standalone pad—and the transaction transferred technology and intellectual property, not proof of a broadly available consumer charger.
What Qualcomm’s Halo technology included
Halo was designed to let an electric vehicle charge after its driver parked over a wireless ground pad. The system encompassed more than the pad itself: EE Times described power conversion, tuning, wireless power transfer, magnetics, control, communications and safety systems as parts of the technology.

That system-level scope matters. A working wireless charging setup requires compatible equipment in the vehicle as well as ground-side hardware, plus the controls needed to manage the power transfer. Qualcomm’s Halo was therefore an automotive technology platform intended for development and integration—not a plug-in accessory that could make any EV charge wirelessly.

The supplier deals show that Qualcomm pursued commercialization through automotive companies rather than by presenting Halo as a consumer retail product. Lear’s announced license was royalty-bearing and included Qualcomm technical and engineering support. Preh’s plan likewise focused on developing, making and supplying systems to automakers; Nichicon’s agreement targeted Asian EV and plug-in-hybrid manufacturers.

What the 2019 transaction changed—and what it did not establish
The transfer put Qualcomm’s Halo assets with WiTricity, a company focused on wireless EV charging. EE Times reported that WiTricity said the deal would bring its portfolio to more than 1,500 wireless-charging patents and patent applications. WiTricity also presented the combined portfolio as a way to simplify interoperability for automakers.
That reported portfolio figure is not a count of Halo patents alone, nor does it show how many patents were active, implemented in vehicles or available for licensing. The reported consideration was an unspecified minority stake; the cited announcements do not establish a valuation or provide a breakdown of every asset involved.

Most importantly for drivers, an intellectual-property transaction and supplier development agreements are not the same as mass-market deployment. The announcements document automotive programs and technology-transfer plans, but they do not identify a broadly available consumer Halo charger or establish which production vehicles currently support Halo-derived charging. They also do not settle the present ownership of every related patent.
What wireless EV charging means for a driver
In the Halo use case, the driver parks over a ground pad and the vehicle’s compatible equipment receives energy without a charging cable being plugged in. The pad is only one part of the arrangement: power conversion, tuning, magnetics, communications and safety controls are among the system elements identified in coverage of Halo. A vehicle must be designed or equipped to work with the charging system; parking over a pad alone does not make an incompatible car charge.

For a buyer or fleet evaluating wireless charging, the relevant questions are whether the vehicle and ground equipment are compatible, how much power they can transfer and at what efficiency, how tolerant the system is of parking-position errors, what safety controls and interoperability support it offers, and what installation and infrastructure cost is involved. The cited Halo announcements do not provide a current product-by-product comparison or establish numerical performance for those measures.

The documented outcome is clearer than the strategic rationale: WiTricity acquired the Halo technology, while Qualcomm had already pursued supplier licensing and technology transfer. WiTricity’s CEO Alex Gruzen described wireless charging as important to a future of electric, increasingly shared and autonomous mobility. That statement expresses the company’s view of the market; it does not establish a deployment schedule or guarantee that a particular vehicle will offer wireless charging.
