Prevent counterfeit semiconductors by buying from the original manufacturer or an authorized channel whenever possible. When that is not feasible, qualify the supplier, assess the specific part and supply-chain risk, authenticate and test using appropriate controls, and have a documented process to contain, adjudicate, disposition and report suspect material. No single inspection or test proves authenticity.
What makes a semiconductor counterfeit?
Counterfeit risk is an authenticity problem, not simply a question of whether a component powers on or passes an incoming check. NASA’s procurement definition covers unauthorized reproduction, substitution or alteration that is misrepresented as authentic. Examples include used components sold as new, or false claims about grade, lot, date code or performance.

A part can appear functional and still be misrepresented. Conversely, an unusual appearance or a test anomaly is evidence to investigate, not by itself proof of counterfeiting. NASA describes a suspect part as one for which credible evidence creates reasonable doubt about authenticity.

Why authenticity matters in automotive supply chains
Safety and reliability
Semiconductors are used in safety-critical automotive systems, including braking and airbags. A counterfeit or misrepresented part may not meet the expected specification or may have an unknown history, so its apparent operation at one point does not establish that it will perform as required in service.
In prepared remarks to the Automotive Anti-Counterfeiting Council on September 23, 2026, NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison warned that critical safety components offered online for a fraction of their normal value should raise concerns about whether they are legitimate, safety-tested products. That statement concerns aftermarket safety components broadly; it does not establish a semiconductor-specific incident rate.
Revenue and brand exposure
A suspect component can trigger investigation, containment, replacement decisions and production disruption. If affected vehicles or parts reach customers, the manufacturer may also face warranty, recall or customer-trust consequences. These are credible exposure pathways, not quantified losses: the available cited sources do not establish an automotive-specific counterfeit failure rate or revenue-loss estimate.

How to prevent counterfeit semiconductors from entering the supply chain
1. Prefer original-manufacturer and authorized sources
For in-production parts, make the original manufacturer or its authorized distribution channel the default. Preserve purchase records and lot-level traceability so that the organization can connect incoming material to its source and downstream use.
In certain covered government procurements, this is more than a preferred practice. DFARS text calls for covered contractors to obtain in-production parts from original manufacturers, authorized suppliers, or suppliers that source exclusively through those channels. For parts no longer in production or unavailable through authorized stock, the provision permits contractor-approved suppliers qualified using established counterfeit-prevention standards and processes, including inspection, testing and authentication. These requirements apply to covered acquisitions, not automatically to every private automotive purchase.
2. Qualify non-authorized suppliers against documented criteria
When an authorized route is unavailable, assess the supplier before placing an order. Review the supplier’s sourcing and traceability evidence, prevention and detection controls, containment and adjudication process, reporting practices, and willingness to support audits. Assess the particular part’s criticality, lifecycle status and supply history; a supplier’s general reputation does not replace part-specific evaluation.

NASA’s clause distinguishes an authorized supplier—one with a contractual arrangement or express written authority from the original manufacturer or current design activity—from a contractor-approved supplier qualified against prescribed criteria. That distinction is useful in procurement controls, but the clause’s legal effect is limited to the contracts to which it applies.
3. Set receiving controls according to risk
Define inspection, testing and authentication before material arrives, and select methods based on engineering judgment, the part and supplier risk, and applicable standards. Visual examination may identify anomalies, while other assessments may be needed to investigate markings, documentation, electrical behavior or construction. The cited standards support layered controls; they do not establish one universal test recipe for automotive semiconductors.
Do not treat a passing functional test as proof of provenance, or a clean visual inspection as assurance that a component is genuine. Likewise, certification evidence describes the scope of an assessment; it does not authenticate every component in a shipment.

Which standards and rules are relevant?
The documents below address different parts of the control system and different audiences. SAE standards are frameworks or guidance unless incorporated into a contract or other applicable requirement; they should not be represented as universally binding on automotive manufacturers.
| Document | Edition or status in cited material | Role and scope |
|---|---|---|
| SAE AS6081A | Revised April 21, 2023 | Controls for avoidance, detection, mitigation, disposition and reporting in independent EEE-part distribution. |
| SAE AS6301A | Revised September 18, 2024 | Compliance-verification criteria for certification bodies assessing AS6081A compliance; certification is not a guarantee that a particular component is authentic. |
| SAE ARP6328A | Revised September 7, 2023 | Implementation guidance for counterfeit EEE-part controls in accordance with AS5553. |
| SAE ARP6178A | Revised August 1, 2023 | Tools for assessing non-authorized suppliers. |
| SAE AS6496A | Revised December 3, 2024 | Counterfeit EEE-part mitigation in authorized distribution. |
| DLA ASSIST adoption metadata | Listed as active in the cited material | Lists SAE-AS6081 as an active adoption and describes its scope as source identification, risk mitigation, control and reporting. |
| DFARS procurement provision | Applicability depends on the covered acquisition | Sets sourcing and counterfeit-detection-and-avoidance system requirements for contractors within its scope. |
| NASA procurement clause | Applicability depends on the covered contract | Defines authorized and contractor-approved suppliers and a suspect-part threshold for the contracts to which it applies. |
Use the standard whose scope matches the organization’s role: AS6081A addresses independent distribution, while AS6496A addresses authorized distribution. ARP6328A and ARP6178A support implementation and supplier assessment. Check the current edition, adoption and contractual applicability before using any document as a requirement.

How to assess a supplier or a suspect component
Use a risk-based decision rather than relying on one signal or a certificate alone. These questions help structure supplier selection and escalation:
- Source and traceability: Is the supplier authorized, and can it demonstrate a credible chain back to the manufacturer or other documented source?
- Supplier controls: Are prevention, detection, containment, adjudication and reporting processes documented and auditable?
- Part and lifecycle risk: Is the device safety-critical, obsolete, scarce or being purchased outside normal authorized channels?
- Evidence available: Do records, packaging, markings and appropriate inspection or test results support the claimed identity and condition?
- Assessment scope: What does an audit or certification actually cover, and does it apply to this supplier activity and part flow?
Unusually low pricing can be a warning sign, especially for safety-critical parts, but price alone does not establish that a part is counterfeit. Evaluate it alongside provenance, documentation and technical evidence.
What to do when parts are suspect
- Stop and contain. Follow the organization’s control procedure to prevent suspect material from being installed or shipped. Identify related inventory and lots using available traceability records.
- Preserve evidence. Retain packaging, labels, purchase and shipping records, inspection findings, photographs and test results. Avoid altering or disposing of the parts before the responsible quality or compliance function determines next steps.
- Adjudicate through qualified functions. Have procurement, quality and engineering review the source evidence and appropriate technical findings. Record the basis for a suspect, confirmed or cleared disposition; do not treat a single screening result as conclusive.
- Decide disposition and replacement. Keep material on hold until the authorized decision-maker documents whether it can be accepted, must be returned, replaced or otherwise handled under applicable procedures and contract terms.
- Report where required. Notify customers, manufacturers, authorities or contract representatives when applicable law, contract clauses or company procedures require it. Covered NASA and DFARS procurements have requirements within their respective scopes; do not assume a single reporting rule applies to every private automotive transaction.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The Semiconductor Industry Association has warned that counterfeit semiconductors can jeopardize lives, citing applications such as vehicle airbags. That is an industry association statement, not a regulator’s finding. The sources cited here support the seriousness of the risk and the need for supply-chain controls, but they do not provide a current automotive-specific counterfeit failure rate, incident series or quantified revenue-loss estimate.
