Legacy Overland’s Discovery Series II restomod keeps the original shape largely intact while replacing its engine with a fuel-injected 5.7-liter Chevrolet V8 reported at 315 hp. An automatic transmission, custom fabrication and a more contemporary cabin make it a substantial mechanical update, but the restrained exterior keeps the truck recognizable.
What is Project Earnie?
Carscoops reported on October 5, 2026, that Legacy Overland built this Discovery Series II restomod. The report’s headline spells the project “Earnie,” while its body calls it “Ernie”; without confirmation from the builder, neither spelling can be treated as definitive. Carscoops describes the vehicle as 27 years old but does not give an exact model year.
The build’s appeal is its balance: most of the original body and panels remain, while the powertrain and several cabin features have been modernized. It is presented as a restrained reworking rather than a conversion designed to look radically different.
What changed under the hood?
The original powertrain has been replaced by a 5.7-liter Chevrolet small-block V8 with electronic fuel injection. Carscoops reports an output of 315 hp; that is a figure reported by the outlet, not an independently documented test result or a specification tied in the report to a named manufacturer document.

The engine is paired with a 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission. Supporting work includes bespoke driveshafts, upgraded cooling, fabricated headers and exhaust, and custom engine and transmission mounts. The report does not state why Legacy Overland chose this engine or provide performance testing, engine provenance or a primary build sheet.
How much of the original exterior remains?
Carscoops says the Discovery retains most of its original parts and panels. The reported changes give it a darker, more utilitarian look without replacing its familiar bodywork:

What is different inside?
Legacy Overland reportedly fitted bespoke brown leather to the seats, center console, shifter and door panels, and added a checkered headliner. The cabin also gets upgraded air conditioning, a modern infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and upgraded speakers. The report does not identify the head unit or speaker products, so those descriptions are not enough to match the equipment to a particular retail model.

Why the build feels restrained
The vehicle’s defining choice is not simply the V8 swap; it is the contrast between that major mechanical change and the largely preserved exterior. Custom mounts, driveshafts, cooling and exhaust work point to a broad conversion, while the retained body panels keep the Discovery’s identity visible. Inside, leather and a checkered headliner preserve a tailored, period-aware feel alongside Apple CarPlay and updated climate equipment.
That makes “perfect” a matter of taste. For a reader who wants a recognizable Series II with a modernized drivetrain and cabin, the combination is compelling. Someone looking for documented performance, a specific model-year reference, or a heavily transformed design would need details the report does not provide.

Carscoops does not provide the exact model year or VIN, project cost, detailed performance results, a primary build sheet or the tire dimensions. Its description is a report of the build, not an independent inspection or test.
