There is no single six-cylinder engine that is best for both performance and fuel economy. The strongest choice depends on the vehicle and configuration: a luxury sedan, a rear-wheel-drive sports car and a crossover solve different problems. These examples show the trade-offs using manufacturer specifications, not a controlled engine-only comparison or a market-wide ranking.
How the cited six-cylinder options compare
Horsepower and torque describe output; EPA-estimated mileage describes fuel consumption under standardized test procedures. Compare the figures in context: vehicle class, model year and drivetrain all matter.

For the highest listed output in these examples: BMW 740i
The BMW 740i has the highest listed horsepower and torque among the cited configurations, along with the highest listed city and highway mileage figures in this comparison. Those numbers apply to the rear-wheel-drive 740i; BMW lists an all-wheel-drive configuration separately, so do not assume its figures are identical. BMW also identifies the estimates as preliminary.

For six-cylinder power in a crossover: Chevrolet Blazer RS
The 2026 Blazer RS offers a 3.6L V6 rated at 308 hp and 270 lb-ft, with a listed 26 mpg highway for front-wheel drive. Chevrolet also lists the Blazer’s standard 2.0L turbo four-cylinder at 228 hp and 29 mpg highway in front-wheel drive. Within this model, the V6 brings more listed power while the four-cylinder has the higher highway estimate.

What the mileage and power figures do—and do not—tell you
- They are configuration-specific. A drivetrain change can affect the applicable rating; the BMW page distinguishes rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.
- They are manufacturer specifications, not a direct road test. Vehicle weight, gearing, tires, aerodynamics and test conditions differ, so these figures do not isolate engine efficiency.
- EPA estimates are not a promise of real-world mileage. BMW explicitly notes that actual mileage varies and calls its estimates preliminary.
- Model year matters. The 2018 Camry V6 figures are historical, and the Supra’s cited 2025 power output is distinct from its 2026 fuel-economy specification.
How to choose
- Choose the vehicle type first. Decide whether a luxury sedan, sports car or crossover fits your passengers, cargo and driving needs.
- Compare the exact drivetrain. Check that the horsepower, torque and mileage figures match the version you are considering, especially when choosing between two- and all-wheel drive.
- Balance power against the mileage you value. Use city, highway and combined ratings where available; do not compare a highway-only figure with a combined estimate.
- Verify current specifications before buying. Availability and ratings can change by model year, trim and configuration. Consult the manufacturer page for the exact vehicle on sale.
