Unlike familiar W12 and W16 designs often described as using four banks, this layout has three distinct banks set 60 degrees apart. The filing describes a possible engine configuration—not a confirmed Porsche production engine—and provides no verified displacement, horsepower figure or test result.
What does Porsche’s W18 patent describe?
The reported patent drawings show three cylinder banks meeting at one crankshaft. Each bank has six cylinders in the illustrated version, making 18 the drawing’s maximum count. A useful mental picture is three inline-six banks sharing a crankshaft, but the patent describes one integrated engine layout, not three complete engines simply joined together.

The banks are reported to sit at 60-degree angles to one another. That three-bank cross-section is what makes the arrangement look like a literal W: the cylinders occupy three distinct directions around the crankshaft rather than the more familiar paired-bank arrangement.
Is 18 cylinders the only possible version?
No. Car and Driver reports the patent application says, “It should be mentioned that the internal-combustion engine could also have a different number of cylinders.” Auto Zeitung says the concept could extend to cylinder counts divisible by three; VISOR specifically mentions nine- and 15-cylinder versions, though that detail has not been independently checked against the primary filing. The 18-cylinder configuration is the one shown in the reported drawings, not a confirmed production specification. Car and Driver · Auto Zeitung · VISOR

How is it different from a Bentley W12 or Bugatti W16?
Car and Driver and Road & Track distinguish Porsche’s reported three-bank idea from the four-bank descriptions they give for Bentley’s W12 and Bugatti’s W16. Auto Zeitung characterizes those engines as having two banks of staggered cylinder rows, rather than three independent banks. Engine naming conventions can vary, so the useful distinction here is the reported physical arrangement: Porsche’s concept has three banks; the comparison engines are described by those sources as having four. Road & Track · Auto Zeitung
The reported descriptions do not establish a Porsche production prototype for a direct engineering comparison. They also provide no comparable Porsche displacement, output, or efficiency figures, so those are not meaningful bases for ranking the designs.
Why does the patent use three banks?
The reported engineering rationale focuses on intake and exhaust routing. The arrangement places intake plenums over the cylinder heads and allows a direct path for intake air, while separating intake routing from the exhaust system. Porsche’s stated design claim is that reducing intake-flow losses and keeping incoming air cooler could help increase achievable power at unchanged displacement.

Auto Zeitung also describes exhaust pipes routed between or alongside the banks and combined into a larger shared pipe, with lower exhaust back pressure as an intended benefit. These are design intentions described in patent reporting, not demonstrated results: the available accounts supply no test data or comparison engine. Auto Zeitung · Car and Driver
Could the Porsche W18 have three turbochargers?
The reported application allows for one exhaust-gas turbocharger per cylinder bank, so a three-turbo configuration is possible in the described concept. That does not mean the patent confirms turbochargers as built hardware, or that Porsche has developed or tested a tri-turbo W18.

No production vehicle or development program using this engine has been announced in the reporting. The patent does not identify a model for it, so suggestions that it belongs in a 911, a 918 successor, or another Porsche are speculation rather than established plans.

What performance figures are known?
The reports provide no specific displacement, horsepower, or test results for the W18 concept. The patent’s reported claim that its layout could raise achievable power at unchanged displacement is a design claim, not a measured outcome. Without a stated displacement or test comparison, there is no substantiated output figure to quote.
