Porsche Is Considering U.S. Production, but Has Not Committed to a Factory

Porsche CEO Michael Leiters reportedly called U.S. production compelling but a huge investment. The company has not announced a final factory commitment.

Porsche is reportedly examining whether to build cars in the United States, but it has not announced a final decision to build a U.S. factory. In coverage of the company’s March 2026 annual-results call, CEO Michael Leiters described the idea as “compelling” but a “huge investment,” with establishing a supply chain among the challenges. No U.S. location, model, investment commitment or production date has been announced in the sources available.

What decision has Porsche actually made?

The distinction is between considering U.S. production and committing to it. Road & Track reported on 12 March 2026 that Leiters said, “We are looking at it,” and described production in the United States as “compelling, but it’s a huge investment.” Those remarks were reported from the annual-results call; the report is secondary coverage, not an official transcript. Road & Track’s report does not establish that Porsche approved a plant.

As of the company’s subsequent public announcements described here, Porsche has not identified a U.S. factory site, committed a capital sum to one, named a model for U.S. production or set a start date. The reported decision is to examine the option—not to build.

Why is Porsche considering American production?

The March report connected the discussion to U.S. tariffs and cited €811.4 million in 2025 U.S. tariff costs. That figure comes from Road & Track’s coverage, rather than a primary transcript located for Leiters’s exchange. Tariff rates and their effects can change, so the amount should be read in that reported 2025 context, not as a current or recurring annual cost.

Tariff exposure is only part of the problem. Leiters’s reported remarks emphasized that choosing a location would not be enough: Porsche would also need to establish a supply chain. A factory decision would therefore involve a substantial investment and the work of putting production infrastructure in place. The available reporting does not describe a completed feasibility study or Porsche’s final assessment of the costs and benefits.

What do Porsche’s official plans say?

Strategy 2035 focuses on resilience and sharper priorities

At its 23 June 2026 Annual General Meeting, Porsche presented Strategy 2035 as a plan for sustainable profitability and stronger strategic resilience. The company named three pillars: Brand & Customer, Products & Technology, and Company & Operations. It also said it intends to reduce model variants and focus more sharply on its product strategy. These priorities provide context for the company’s wider direction, but they do not amount to an announcement of U.S. manufacturing. Porsche’s Strategy 2035 announcement includes the company’s statements.

German sites have a separate long-term investment commitment

On 27 July 2026, Porsche announced a Future Package agreed with its General Works Council, IG Metall and the Südwestmetall employers’ association. It provides for a cumulative €2.1 billion investment in the Zuffenhausen and Weissach sites through 2035 and extends employment and site protection through that year. Porsche said the package supports the sites’ future viability, including continued two-door sports-car production in Zuffenhausen and development work in Weissach. Porsche’s Future Package announcement describes those commitments.

Investment in Germany does not prove that U.S. production is impossible, just as a U.S. option would not by itself cancel the German commitments. The announcements address different questions: the Future Package sets out plans for named German sites, while the U.S. production idea remains under consideration in the reported remarks.

How large is Porsche’s North American market?

Porsche reported 37,712 customer deliveries in North America in the first half of 2026, within 122,306 deliveries worldwide during the same period. The company’s 9 July delivery announcement reaffirmed its full-year forecast. Porsche’s H1 2026 delivery announcement provides the figures.

Those numbers show the scale of Porsche’s North American business, but deliveries alone do not establish that building a U.S. factory makes financial sense. A production decision would also have to account for the investment and supply-chain challenges Leiters reportedly identified; Porsche has not publicly provided a final calculation.

Which Porsche models could be built in the United States?

No model has been assigned to potential U.S. production in the sources cited here. Porsche’s existing German-site commitments include two-door sports-car production in Zuffenhausen, but that does not identify what, if anything, the company might make in the United States. It would be speculation to name an SUV or any other model as a candidate without a specific company announcement.
