La ventaja de China no consiste en que los motores de combustión hayan dejado de importar. Consiste en que, con el auge del coche eléctrico, fabricar bien un automóvil depende cada vez más de capacidades en las que China ha acumulado escala: baterías, integración de proveedores, volumen de producción y aprendizaje industrial. Y su ventaja de costes también alcanza a los coches de combustión.
Qué cambió en la industria del automóvil
Durante décadas, la experiencia en motores y transmisiones fue una fuente central de ventaja para los fabricantes. Sigue siendo valiosa, pero la electrificación ha elevado el peso de otros elementos: celdas y paquetes de baterías, electrónica de potencia, acceso a componentes y materiales, capacidad para producir a gran escala y rapidez para mejorar los procesos de fábrica.
El cambio ya se refleja en las ventas. Según la Agencia Internacional de la Energía (AIE), los coches eléctricos e híbridos representaron alrededor del 30% de las ventas mundiales de automóviles en 2024. Los eléctricos superaron una quinta parte del total; sus ventas crecieron más de catorce veces entre 2017 y 2024, mientras las ventas de coches exclusivamente de combustión habían caído un 30% desde su máximo de 2017. Por qué China destaca en los coches eléctricos
Una escala de producción excepcional
China fabricó 12,4 millones de coches eléctricos en 2024, más del 70% de la producción mundial de esa categoría, según la AIE. Además, las marcas chinas representaron más del 80% de la producción de coches eléctricos dentro del país, frente a aproximadamente dos tercios en 2021. Ese volumen ofrece una base amplia para utilizar fábricas, perfeccionar procesos y repartir costes industriales entre más vehículos; por sí solo, no demuestra que cada fabricante o modelo sea más eficiente que sus rivales.

Baterías más baratas y experiencia de fabricación
La batería es una parte especialmente importante de la diferencia de costes de un eléctrico. La AIE estima que los menores costes del sistema de propulsión explicaron casi el 40% de la diferencia de coste de fabricación de vehículos eléctricos entre China y las economías avanzadas. En 2024, el precio medio de las celdas de batería en China fue más de un 30% inferior al de Europa y más de un 20% inferior al de Estados Unidos, según el análisis de la agencia. La competitividad de las baterías también refleja el acceso a la cadena de suministro, la experiencia acumulada en fabricación y la innovación en baterías de litio-ferrofosfato (LFP), señala la AIE. La concentración de capacidad puede crear vulnerabilidades de suministro para otros mercados, pero no convierte la posición actual en permanente: inversión, automatización, eficiencia y aumento de escala pueden reducir las diferencias con el tiempo. La ventaja de costes no se limita a los eléctricos
Una comparación de la AIE para 2024 concluyó que fabricar un SUV pequeño en China costaba más de un 30% menos que en economías avanzadas tanto con motor de combustión interna como con propulsión eléctrica. El dato se refiere al coste directo de fabricación bajo los supuestos de vehículo de ese análisis; no significa que el precio de venta al público sea un 30% inferior. Los precios finales también dependen de las especificaciones del modelo, los márgenes y, según el mercado, las ayudas públicas.

Esto matiza la idea de que la electrificación creó desde cero la ventaja china. China aportó el 40% de las exportaciones mundiales de coches eléctricos en 2024, cerca de 1,25 millones de unidades, según la AIE. Las exportaciones muestran que los fabricantes chinos ya tienen alcance internacional. Pero exportar desde China no es lo mismo que producir en el extranjero: ese mismo año, las operaciones de fabricantes chinos fuera del país representaron menos del 2% de su producción mundial de coches eléctricos.

Por tanto, la cifra de exportación no debe confundirse con la cuota de mercado de marcas chinas en cada país ni con su capacidad productiva local. Aranceles, políticas comerciales, logística y decisiones de inversión pueden cambiar dónde se fabrican y venden los vehículos. AIE, Global EV Outlook 2025: producción y comercio.
Lo que esta ventaja no significa
- El motor y la ingeniería mecánica no se han vuelto irrelevantes. La electrificación cambia qué capacidades pesan más, no elimina el valor de diseñar, ensamblar y fabricar componentes del vehículo que no pertenecen a la batería.
- China no es la única fuerza nueva. La AIE atribuye a fabricantes eléctricos de reciente creación el 45% de las ventas mundiales de coches eléctricos en 2024; esa categoría incluye a Tesla y a empresas chinas.
- Una menor cifra de fabricación no es automáticamente un precio menor para el comprador. Los costes de fábrica y los precios de mercado son medidas distintas.
- La posición actual no garantiza una ventaja permanente. Otros países y fabricantes pueden invertir, aumentar escala y automatizar; la concentración de la cadena de baterías también expone a riesgos de suministro.
El papel de la política industrial china
En una comunicación oficial del 20 de mayo de 2024, el Consejo de Estado de China citó a Ding Weishun, funcionario del Ministerio de Comercio, describiendo las ventajas del sector chino de vehículos de nueva energía como resultado de años de esfuerzo e innovación empresarial y de una competencia intensa en el mercado. Es una caracterización oficial, no una evaluación independiente. La AIE, por su parte, aporta comparaciones de producción y costes que permiten dimensionar la posición china frente a otras regiones.
