Plug-In Hybrids With the Longest Range (PHEV) for 2025 are led in the United States by the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4MATIC, with an EPA-rated 54 miles of electric range. The Mercedes-Benz GLE450e follows at 50 miles, while Volvo S60/V60 T8 models reach 40 miles; electric range is separate from total gasoline-and-electric range.
This ranking covers U.S. model-year 2025 plug-in hybrids and uses EPA-rated electric range as its primary metric. The 2025 Fuel Economy Guide also reports each vehicle’s total gasoline-and-electric range and, for selected models, its 240-volt charging time.

A plug-in hybrid retains a gasoline tank and internal-combustion engine alongside its battery and electric motor. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says PHEVs typically have driving ranges that are comparable to gasoline vehicles
, but the electric portion of that range depends on charging and driving conditions.
Key takeaways
- According to the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 Fuel Economy Guide, the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4MATIC has the longest researched U.S. 2025 PHEV electric range at 54 miles.
- The Mercedes-Benz GLE450e 4MATIC ranks second for electric range at 50 miles and has a 450-mile total gasoline-and-electric range.
- The Volvo S60 T8 AWD and Volvo V60 T8 AWD each provide 40 miles of EPA electric range and 530 miles of total range.
- The Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Volvo XC60 T8 AWD have the longest total range in this comparison at 560 miles, even though neither leads on electric range.
- EPA range is a comparison estimate, not a guarantee; cold weather, high speeds, climate control, and other accessory use can reduce electric driving range.

What is the difference between electric range and total range?
Electric range measures how far a PHEV can travel on its battery under the EPA test conditions before relying on its gasoline powertrain, while total range combines the vehicle’s electric and gasoline-powered driving capability. The two measurements answer different buying questions.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines a PHEV as a vehicle that combines a battery and electric motor with a gasoline tank and internal-combustion engine. The EPA also says, PHEVs typically have driving ranges that are comparable to gasoline vehicles.
That combination is why a PHEV can have a modest electric range but a much longer road-trip range than the battery figure alone suggests. See the EPA’s explanation of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles for the distinction.
| Decision lens | Leading model or models | Published figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Longest electric commuting range | Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4MATIC | 54 electric miles | Highest battery-driving estimate in this shortlist |
| Longest total road-trip range | Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Volvo XC60 T8 AWD | 560 total miles | Highest combined gasoline-and-electric range in this comparison |
| Second-longest electric range | Mercedes-Benz GLE450e 4MATIC | 50 electric miles; 450 total miles | Nearly the GLC350e’s electric range in a larger SUV |
| Long electric range in a sedan or wagon | Volvo S60 T8 AWD and V60 T8 AWD | 40 electric miles; 530 total miles | Same range rating in two different body styles |
The GLC350e leads on electric range but does not lead on total range. The guide lists the GLC350e at 380 total miles, compared with 450 miles for the GLE450e, 530 miles for the Volvo S60 and V60, 550 miles for the Lexus NX, and 560 miles for both the Ford Escape and Volvo XC60.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How quickly do 2025 PHEVs charge at home?
Home charging speed depends on the outlet or charging equipment, the vehicle, and the electrical installation, but a dedicated 240-volt setup is faster than a standard 120-volt outlet. According to the U.S. EPA (2026), most plug-in electric vehicles can use a standard 120-volt outlet, while a dedicated 240-volt outlet or charging system can replenish the battery more quickly.
The following are the 240-volt charging times supplied in the 2025 guide. The times are useful for comparing convenience, but they should not be read as a promise that every home installation or charging session will take exactly that long.

Charging at home is what allows a PHEV owner to repeatedly use the vehicle’s electric range rather than treating the battery as an occasional extra. For a home setup, a J1772 EV charger may be a practical accessory for compatible U.S.-market PHEVs, but the buyer should verify connector compatibility, circuit capacity, amperage, weather rating, and installation requirements before purchasing equipment.

Why can real-world electric range be lower than the EPA number?
Real-world electric range can be lower than the EPA number because temperature, climate-control use, other accessories, driving speed, and driving style affect energy consumption. The EPA describes its estimates as comparison tools rather than guarantees and states, The EPA estimates, including EV range, are meant to be a general guideline for consumers when comparing vehicles.
EPA testing uses adjusted city and highway results to create the combined range shown on the label. According to the U.S. EPA’s fuel-economy and EV-range methodology (2026), the adjusted city and highway values are weighted 55% for city driving and 45% for highway driving. The EPA’s fuel-economy and EV-range testing explanation also describes adjustments intended to account for factors such as HVAC use, cold temperatures, and aggressive or high-speed driving.
The practical implication is straightforward: a 54-mile EPA rating does not mean that every GLC350e will travel exactly 54 miles on every battery charge. A cold, fast highway trip with substantial heating or air-conditioning demand may produce a different result from the standardized combined estimate.

How should you choose among the longest-range PHEVs?
Choose according to whether electric commuting range, total road-trip range, vehicle size, body style, or charging convenience matters most. The highest electric-range vehicle is not automatically the best fit for every owner.
- Start with the daily route. If minimizing gasoline use on routine driving is the priority, the GLC350e’s 54-mile EPA electric range is the leading figure here. Compare the full round-trip distance with the rating instead of comparing only the one-way commute.
- Separate weekday driving from road trips. If stopping less often on long journeys matters more than electric commuting range, the Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Volvo XC60 T8 AWD lead this comparison with 560 total miles.
- Choose the vehicle format before chasing the number. The list includes a sedan, wagon, compact SUVs, mainstream SUVs, and larger luxury SUVs. A 40-mile Volvo S60 or V60 may suit a different need from a 54-mile GLC350e even though the range gap is measurable.
- Confirm that home charging is realistic. A PHEV delivers its strongest fuel-saving potential when the owner can recharge regularly. Check outlet access, circuit capacity, installation cost, and whether the selected vehicle’s connector matches the planned equipment.
- Verify volatile purchase details separately. Current pricing, inventory, incentives, tax treatment, and exact trim availability are not established by the range table and should be checked for the buyer’s location before signing a purchase agreement.
What this 2025 PHEV range ranking does not tell you
This ranking does not determine purchase price, ownership cost, fuel economy, cargo capacity, passenger space, performance, reliability, or eligibility for an incentive. It ranks the supplied U.S. model-year 2025 vehicles by EPA electric range and shows their published total range, with charging information where the supplied guide data include it.
The ranking also does not mix European WLTP results with U.S. EPA results. EPA figures are used consistently here because the question is about U.S. 2025 vehicles. Buyers outside the United States should look for the range standard used in their market rather than treating these EPA numbers as directly interchangeable with another testing system.
The Bottom Line
The Mercedes-Benz GLC350e 4MATIC is the U.S. 2025 EPA electric-range leader at 54 miles. For maximum total gasoline-and-electric range, the Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Volvo XC60 T8 AWD tie at 560 miles, so the right choice depends on whether daily electric driving or long-distance range matters more.
