What Perth’s crash statistics show—and what they do not
The Road Safety Commission’s metropolitan summary records 114,162 reported crashes from 2020 to 2024. This is a five-year total, not a count for the current year. The summary was last updated on 1 July 2025 and uses WA Police Force data with metropolitan and regional boundaries defined by Main Roads WA. Road Safety Commission: Perth Metropolitan road statistics
Four per cent of those reported crashes resulted in at least one person killed or seriously injured. Across the period, 5,345 people were killed or seriously injured: 314 fatalities and 5,031 people seriously injured. Those are counts of people, not crash events.
The serious-injury and fatality data describe road-safety patterns, not the amount of congestion a crash caused:
#1 Best Overall
- UPSCALED 4K FRONT + 1080P REAR DUAL DASH CAM: The ROVE R2-4K DUAL records the road ahead and behind at the same time. The front camera captures at 2.5K (QHD) and intelligently upscales to 4K (2160P) for higher-detail playback, while the rear camera records at Full HD 1080P. This is upscaled 4K, not native 4K, engineered to show sharper everyday detail than standard 1080P dash cams, so you can read license plates, signs, and surroundings in front and rear footage.
- SONY STARVIS 2 IMX675 SENSOR + SUPER NIGHT VISION: The front camera uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP image sensor with a wide F1.5 aperture (F1.8 rear) and HDR to pull in more light for clearer low-light footage. This advanced sensor enhances nighttime clarity, helping capture license plates, road signs, and surrounding vehicles with greater reliability when driving after dark, through tunnels, or in dusk and dawn conditions.
- ULTRA FAST 5.8GHz WIFI/ UP TO 20MB/s DOWNLOAD SPEED: With its built-in dual-band 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz WiFi, you can use the ROVE dash cam app to view and manage dash cam recordings instantly on your iPhone and Android smartphone. Using the ROVE app, download your recorded videos directly to your smartphone at up to 20 MB/sec, then easily share them on social media with friends and family. Additionally, manage camera settings and update the latest firmware over-the-air via the ROVE App.
- CAR CAMERA WITH GPS: The new front and rear dashcam comes with built-in GPS, which enables you to view real-time live speed and compass on the 3” IPS wide camera screen. It records precise driving routes, locations, and speed stamps directly on the video so you can watch dashcam videos with GPS data using ROVE's free GPS Player on your PC or Mac & get additional evidence when you need it.
- FEATURES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY INCLUDED: Experience peace of mind with this front and rear car dash cam. It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.
- 51% of people killed or seriously injured were involved in crashes at intersections.
- 59% were involved in crashes on local roads; 37% were on state roads.
- By crash circumstance, 25% were in right-angle crashes, 18% in rear-end crashes, 14% in right-turn-through crashes and 14% in hit-object crashes.
- By speed zone, the largest shares were on 60 km/h sections (31%), 70 km/h sections (22%) and 50 km/h sections (21%).
These figures do not identify which crashes produced the longest queues, and they should not be used as a ranking of Perth’s delay hotspots. The Commission’s metropolitan KSI map covers 2020–2024, but crashes without recorded latitude and longitude are included in totals and cannot be plotted, so the map is not an exhaustive display of every crash.
For more recent fatality totals, the Commission directs readers to its Road Statistics Western Australia page and current fatality dashboard. Fatality figures can be updated and may be preliminary; the 2020–2024 metropolitan summary is a separate, dated dataset.

Why a crash can add to peak-hour travel time
Peak periods already bring routine congestion. Main Roads distinguishes that expected congestion from an incident-related increase: “Abnormal delay is delay over and above regular congestion that may be expected during peak periods.” Main Roads: What types of alerts are available?
A crash or breakdown can trigger an alert and affect traffic beyond the immediate incident location through lane restrictions, closures or detours. Main Roads says its congestion alerts notify road users about unplanned events, with the initial cause classified where possible. The agency does not give an average number of minutes that crashes add to Perth metropolitan journeys, so a specific delay estimate for a route cannot be inferred from the crash totals.

Where to check Perth traffic before you leave
The Main Roads WA Travel Map is the official live-check option for incidents including crashes and breakdowns, road closures and detours. It also offers a Google traffic congestion layer. Map conditions are transient: check shortly before departure, and recheck if your trip is later or your route changes.
- Open the Main Roads WA Travel Map and view the area and roads on your planned route.
- Check incident alerts for crashes or breakdowns, and look for closures or detours that could affect access.
- Use the congestion layer alongside incident information to assess current traffic conditions; it is not a forecast of how long an incident will continue.
- Recheck before setting out. An alert or traffic pattern can change while you are planning.
How Main Roads manages incidents
Main Roads says its Road Network Operations Centre monitors Perth’s main roads and freeways and works with emergency services. On smart freeways, lane-use management, electronic message boards and an around-the-clock Incident Response Service support incident management. The agency says speed limits may be reduced during incidents to help minimise congestion, while signs can manage lanes and inform drivers. These measures are intended to help manage traffic; they cannot guarantee that a crash will not cause delay. Main Roads: How will my journey be easier?
If you are involved in a crash or breakdown
On a major road, Main Roads advises drivers to move to an emergency lane or roadside if they can, remain in the vehicle with their seatbelt on and hazard lights activated, and call emergency services on 000 if required. Main Roads lists 138 138 for advice and says experienced operators monitor Perth freeways 24/7. Follow official instructions and prioritise safety over checking traffic information.
