1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsP0720 generally points to a problem with the transmission output speed sensor signal or its circuit. It does not, by itself, prove the sensor has failed. Wiring, connectors, power or ground, a control module, and—in some vehicles—a sensor rotor or internal transmission issue can also set the code. The correct diagnosis and test values depend on the vehicle’s year, make, model, and transmission.
What does the P0720 code mean?
P0720 is generally associated with an abnormal, missing, or implausible signal from the transmission output speed sensor or its circuit. The sensor reports output-shaft speed to the vehicle’s control electronics, which use that information as part of transmission and vehicle-speed operation.
The wording is not identical across manufacturers. Ford’s On Board Diagnostics II PCED describes P0720 as “Insufficient input from Output Shaft Speed sensor,” while Mitsubishi and Nissan service procedures refer to an output speed sensor system or sensor fault. Those descriptions are examples for particular vehicles, not a universal definition of the exact electrical fault or failed part. See the Ford On Board Diagnostics II PCED, Mitsubishi output shaft speed sensor system procedure, and Mitsubishi output speed sensor malfunction procedure.
What symptoms can P0720 cause?
Symptoms vary by vehicle and by the nature of the fault. A vehicle may store P0720 without showing every symptom, and a listed symptom can have other causes.

What can cause P0720?
The code identifies a signal or circuit problem to investigate; it does not rank the likely causes for every vehicle. Manufacturer diagnostic procedures identify several possibilities:
Rank #2

Supports major OBDII protocols including CAN, ISO9141, KWP2000, J1850 VPW, and J1850 PWM. This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
- A failed output speed sensor
- A loose, damaged, corroded, open, or shorted connector or harness
- A problem with sensor power, ground, or signal wiring
- A control-module fault, considered after the sensor and circuit checks prescribed for the vehicle
- On some applications, a sensor rotor or an internal transmission fault
Ford’s diagnostic material includes OSS circuit, sensor, and PCM possibilities; Mitsubishi procedures include the harness, sensor, TCM, and—in one application—the rotor. The Nissan Juke service procedure also checks the sensor’s power and ground, TCM input, and harness. See the Ford PCED, Mitsubishi system procedure, and Nissan Juke service-manual reproduction. The Nissan procedure is specific to that application; verify any procedure against authoritative service information for your own vehicle.
How do you diagnose and fix P0720?
Use the diagnostic procedure for the exact year, make, model, and transmission. Connector pinouts, voltage thresholds, scan-tool data, test conditions, and sensor fitment are not interchangeable. For example, one Mitsubishi procedure checks connector condition and wiring, verifies supply, and then evaluates sensor output with an oscilloscope under specified conditions; it calls for sensor replacement only if the signal test fails. That sequence illustrates the approach, but its readings and conditions must not be applied to another vehicle.

Comparable to a fixd car diagnostic tool, the VD10 car code reader car scanner can be a valuable & practical diagnostic aid and also greatly help when diagnosing intermittent problems.
- 【I/M READINESS for THE S-nn-0-g CHECK】- OBDII vehicle may not pass the annual inspection unless the required monitors since reset are complete. So you should at least read the readiness monitors and make sure they are ready. This car obd2 scanner diagnostic tool is equipped with I/M readiness function to check the operations of the e-m-issi0n system on OBD2 compliant vehicles, run I/M monitor readiness test, checking if the pass vehicle s-m-0-g inspection.
- Record the codes and symptoms. Use an OBD-II scanner to retrieve stored codes and note what the vehicle does. A basic code reader may not provide transmission data, and retrieving P0720 alone does not identify the failed component.
- Find the vehicle-specific test procedure. Confirm the application and transmission, then consult the relevant service information for the correct connector, test points, expected values, and verification steps.
- Inspect the connector and harness. Look for damage, corrosion, poor connections, or wiring problems, following the vehicle’s service procedure and safe access practices.
- Test the circuit and sensor signal as directed. The applicable procedure may call for checking supply, ground, continuity, and signal, and may require live scan data or an oscilloscope. Use only the specified test conditions and thresholds.
- Repair the fault established by testing. Repair wiring or connector problems, replace the sensor only if its test fails, or continue the prescribed diagnosis if circuit checks point toward a module or mechanical issue.
- Clear and verify the repair. Recheck the code using the vehicle’s prescribed verification procedure; a code that returns needs further diagnosis.
If you cannot safely access the sensor or do not have the required scan and electrical test equipment, a qualified repair shop or transmission specialist can perform the model-specific checks. Do not substitute generic pin numbers or voltage values for the vehicle’s service information.
Can you drive with P0720?
The code alone cannot establish whether a particular vehicle is safe to drive. If the vehicle shifts harshly, loses its speed indication, enters limp mode, or behaves unpredictably, stop driving when it is safe to do so and arrange prompt inspection. Possible shifting and speedometer problems make extended driving unwise; the general symptom guidance is described by OBD2.com.

Does P0720 mean the output speed sensor is bad?
No. It means the vehicle has detected a fault associated with the output-speed-sensor signal or circuit, under that vehicle’s own diagnostic logic. A failed sensor is one possible cause, but a connector, harness, power or ground fault, control module, or—on some vehicles—a rotor or internal transmission problem may also be involved. Confirm the cause with the vehicle-specific tests before buying or replacing a sensor.
