P0507 means the engine’s idle speed is higher than the vehicle’s control system expects. It describes a detected condition, not a diagnosis of one failed part. An intake or vacuum leak is an important place to look, but the cause and correct test depend on the vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine. Check the service procedure for your exact vehicle before replacing parts.
What does the P0507 code mean?
P0507 is an idle-speed control code commonly described as “Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected.” The control system has detected engine speed above its expected or target idle speed. The manufacturer’s wording and the conditions used to set the code can vary by application.
For one Mitsubishi application, 2021 service information sets an example threshold at actual idle speed at least 200 r/min above target for 10 seconds, under specified monitoring conditions. That is a vehicle-specific example, not a universal P0507 threshold. Mitsubishi Motors service information
What can cause P0507?
- An intake or vacuum leak: Unmetered air entering the engine can raise idle speed. Mitsubishi’s diagnostic information includes an intake-system vacuum leak among the possible causes and directs technicians to check for one. Mitsubishi Motors service information
- Hoses disconnected, damaged, or routed incorrectly: A manufacturer bulletin hosted by NHTSA describes two hoses being confused during service, creating an internal vacuum leak. If P0507 appeared after intake or engine work, review the work and hose routing carefully. Manufacturer TechTIPS bulletin hosted by NHTSA (2020)
- A throttle-body or control-system fault: Mitsubishi’s cited application also lists throttle-body and ECM faults as possibilities. Those examples do not establish that either part is faulty on another vehicle, or even without completing the specified tests on the cited vehicle. Mitsubishi Motors service information
How to diagnose and fix P0507
Use the sequence in the service information for your exact vehicle. The steps below describe a cautious general approach; they are not a substitute for the manufacturer’s diagnostic chart.
#1 Best Overall
- CEL Doctor: The ANCEL AD310 is one of the best-selling OBD II scanners on the market and is recommended by Scotty Kilmer, a YouTuber and auto mechanic. It can easily determine the cause of the check engine light coming on. After repairing the vehicle's problems, it can quickly read and clear diagnostic trouble codes of emission system, read live data & hard memory data, view freeze frame, I/M monitor readiness and collect vehicle information
- Sturdy and Compact: Equipped with a 2.5 foot cable made of very thick, flexible insulation. It is important to have a sturdy scanner as it can easily fall to the ground when working in a car. The AD310 OBD2 scanner is a well-constructed mechanic tool with a sleek design. It weighs 12 ounces and measures 8.9 x 6.9 x 1.4 inches. Thanks to its compact design and light weight, transporting the device is not a problem. The buttons are clearly labelled and the screen is large and displays results clearly
- Accurate Fast and Easy to Use: The AD310 scanner can help you or your mechanic understand if your car is in good condition, provides exceptionally accurate and fast results, reads and clears engine trouble emission codes in seconds after you fixed the problem. This device will let you know immediately and fix the problem right away without any car knowledge. No need for batteries or a charger, get power directly from the OBDII Data Link Connector in your vehicle
- OBDII Protocols and Car Compatibility: Many cheap scan tools do not really support all OBD2 protocols. AD310 scanner as it can support all OBDII protocols such as KWP2000, J1850 VPW, ISO9141, J1850 PWM and CAN. This device also has extensive vehicle compatibility with 1996 US-based, 2000 EU-based and Asian cars, light trucks, SUVs, as well as newer OBD2 and CAN vehicles both domestic and foreign. Pls confirm with our customer service whether it is compatible with your vehicle before purchasing
- Home Necessity and Worthy to Own: This is an excellent code reader to travel or home with as it weighs less and it is compact in design. You can easily slide it in your backpack as you head to the garage, or put it on the dashboard, this will be a great fit for you. The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
- Record all stored codes. Note P0507 and any other diagnostic trouble codes before clearing anything. The Mitsubishi procedure begins by checking codes and directs technicians to address relevant additional codes according to its chart. Mitsubishi Motors service information
- Inspect intake and vacuum plumbing. Look for loose or disconnected hoses, damage, leaks, and incorrect routing. Pay particular attention to components disturbed during recent engine or intake service. A smoke tester may help locate a leak, but the cited manufacturer sources do not specify or endorse a particular tester or brand.
- Follow the vehicle-specific next tests. If no leak is found, use the correct diagnostic chart rather than guessing at parts. The cited Mitsubishi procedure proceeds to throttle-body diagnosis and, if the fault remains, ECM replacement; that sequence applies to its specified vehicle and must not be generalized to other models. Mitsubishi Motors service information
- Verify the repair. Complete the prescribed OBD-II drive cycle for the vehicle, then check whether P0507 or other relevant codes return. Mitsubishi’s cited procedure calls for a specified drive cycle and a code check. Mitsubishi Motors service information
Why hose routing matters after service
A vacuum problem can result from a hose being connected to the wrong place, not only from a visibly cracked hose. The 2020 manufacturer bulletin describes a service-related hose mix-up that caused an internal vacuum leak. Its practical advice is: “The best way to avoid these costly mistakes is to mark the hoses or take photos before removal.” Manufacturer TechTIPS bulletin hosted by NHTSA (2020)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use a repair shop
If the leak is not obvious, the code returns after a repair, or the next diagnostic step involves testing or replacing control-system components, have a qualified technician follow the procedure for your exact vehicle. The cited information does not establish a universal repair, price, or success rate; the correct repair depends on diagnosis and vehicle configuration.
